In the same way lots of things change hands in the heat of battle.
Amid smoke, fire, death and confusion someone from the First Minnesota grabbed it.
Not many from Minnesota survived Gettysburg.
Very true, the First Minnesota was decimated at Gettysburg and were instumental in the Union victory there. Actually the Civil war was the last in which Napoleonic tactics were used. (for obvious reasons) The flag was not only a rallying point for troops and commanders but also a big morale booster and was very revered by the memebers of that particular unit. It was an honor to be the flag bearer although to me it seemed a sure death sentance since people picked it out as an easy target. Capturing the flag was much more than souvienier hunting that is commom on all battlefields. It was a coup to actually capture that flag, usually the other side would retreat taking their regimental colors with them and during that period capturing their flag was an amazing feat. It was a spoil of war, it wasn't stolen and it's much a part of our history. I understand Virginia wanting it back but that flag was won in battle and it should stay here.
Freedom of speech inherantly includes the right of privacy, to read, write and distribute anything at all that a person has written as they choose, without interruption of the federal government and that means that you Jethro, can sit in your living room, and privately turn your pecker orange... Whilst watching a Porno movie and eating Cheeze Curls.
You are nothing but an ass, fold. What is rubbish is that privacy is contained anywhere in the Constitution. You have a right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure but that is as close as the Constitution gets to a right to privacy. Roe v. Wade and the privacy nonsense was just a federal power grab.
Davis was a true American he was a West Point graduate, he served seven years in the army, he was a congressman, a colonel in the Mexican/American war where he served with distinction, he was a US senator and Secretary of War. He gave most of his life to the US. Lincoln, on the other hand, was treaonous. He totally disregarded the Constitution in order to maintain power over fellow Americans that had the moral and legal right to go their own way.
Davis should be held up like Benedict Arnold and John Walker Lindh.
He upholds the Confederacy's legacy of brutal subjegation and violence. To preserve order and advance civilization in this hemisphere it was imperative that it be crushed!
You probably can't see it, because it's passed you by.
Pitch your tent, jethro. Chew on your hardtack and buff your tattered boots with your shirtsleeve. Hum a few lines of "Sewanee River." The glory of the Confederacy is yours and yours alone.
You wrote: "To preserve order and advance civilization in this hemisphere it was imperative that it be crushed!"
Obviously you can't support the statement. I don't know how you can. Over 600,000 people died simply because a few states wanted to go their seperate way and Lincoln wouldn't let them.
From your own link: The "Ku Klux Klan", from the greek "kuklos", ("circle" or "wheel"), is, like Masonry, a "fraternal organization". This one grew out of the Civil War in America to protect and preserve the white race and ensure "voluntary separation" of the races, and even extinction of Blacks, Catholics, and Jews.
If there had been no war there would have been no KKK. The north came into the south after the war and forced changes on that society. There was a backlash. Just because I recognize this doesn't mean I agree with what they did.
Now, JT, that is ridiculous. Slavery was legal at one time. It was recognized in the Constitution. The question was could slavery be ended via a consistutitional amendment. The answer was yes. However, the abolitionists didn't have the power to do so. The south wanted to leave because the north would not play by the rules. Remember the fugitive slaeve laws? Many northerners refused to abide by the duly enacted federal law. The north didn't like the rules so they ignored them.
Well, you know I don't know if the confederacy did or not. I am about half way through the Jefferson Davis biography. I am at the point just prior to Lincoln's election. I suppose I will find out whether the confederacy recognized the 4th. My guess is they did. From what I have read Jeff saw himself as a successor to the founding fathers fighting for independence.
He was Saddam Huissen in the making. Who knows what kind threatening despotic regime he would have created. What mongrel hybrid of a representative republic would have emerged in the South?
How many slaves would you have had to own in order to have the right to vote?
Thank the Lord he was crushed utterly, or for sure, we'd be fighting on the border to this day. We'd be like the Baltic States.
Details, Details.
It's close enough.

Well, the Supreme Court ruled that states, once they become states, do not have a right to secede.
Well actually they didn't rule that states don't have the right to secede. It was dicta nothing more.

Col. Jefferson Davis: American hero in the Mexican-American war.

Are you arguing that my statement was unimportant?
The Court's statement was unimportant to the resolution of the case.
Thanks, Attorney General Bodine.
fold, there is no one other than Rahkonen on these boards that is "relentlessly illogical and selfishly simplistic" asa you. Screwball.

Joint resolution passed by Congress and signed by Jimmy Carter restores Davis' citizenship, effective December 25, 1868
Jimmy Carter? I thought you hated Jimmy Carter?
I just reported the fact. You are trying to read things into it.
Tell me then, is what Carter did a good or a bad thing?
Davis was dead for 89 years when his citizenship was restored, what difference did it make? Obvioulsy Carter thought it made a difference.
I'm asking your opinion.
My opinion is that it wasn't good or bad. It just didn't matter.
Ok. I still don't understand why you would post something you don't care about one way or the other.
It happened and it is on topic. Do I need more?
It was a mistake by Jimmy Carter and probably done with an eye on re-election.
Davis sowed the seeds of treason and sedition.
His name should sink into obscurity or live in infamy.
Davis was a true American he was a West Point graduate, he served seven years in the army, he was a congressman, a colonel in the Mexican/American war where he served with distinction, he was a US senator and Secretary of War. The north was the party brutally subjecting the south that wnated to peacefully leave. The scope of that federal power has been growing ever since.
To preserve order and advance civilization in this hemisphere it was imperative that it be crushed!
Utter nonsense! Civilization was not advandced one iota.
"Civilization was not advandced one iota."
You probably can't see it, because it's passed you by.
Pitch your tent, jethro. Chew on your hardtack and buff your tattered boots with your shirtsleeve. Hum a few lines of "Sewanee River." The glory of the Confederacy is yours and yours alone.

Abe Lincoln = American Hero.
Jeff Davis = American Traitor.
Lincoln is on the $5 bill. Davis is on the side of Stone Mountain. On the summit of Stone Mountain the Klan used to burn crosses.
What else you have to say?
Civilization is equated with Lincoln being on the $5 bill? As for the klan it was a result of the subjugation of the south by the north.
As for the klan it was a result of the subjugation of the south by the north.
No, it was about the subjugation of blacks by evil & ignorant white men.
You didn't have the klan before the civil war. The klan arose out of the conditions imposed on the south at the end of the war. http://religion-cults.com/Secret/Ku-Klux-Klan/kkk.htm
LOL!
From your own link:

Real upstanding group of individuals.
I didn't say they were. You are, again, trying to read things into my posts that aren't there.
Then why do you defend these groups & people?
I wasn't defending anyone. What makes you think I was?
As for the klan it was a result of the subjugation of the south by the north.
Sounds like you're defending them.
Anyone else agree with my assumption?
If there had been no war there would have been no KKK. The north came into the south after the war and forced changes on that society. There was a backlash. Just because I recognize this doesn't mean I agree with what they did.
You got me there, Jethro.
Now answer me this, should slavery be legal?
Should states have the right to legalize slavery?
Should you have a right to own a slave?
Now, JT, that is ridiculous. Slavery was legal at one time. It was recognized in the Constitution. The question was could slavery be ended via a consistutitional amendment. The answer was yes. That's not what I asked, Jethro.
Should slavery be legal?
Should states have the right to legalize slavery?
Should you have a right to own a slave?
Even if I was to go as far as to agree with you regarding states rights, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I'm glad there was a war, I'm glad the North won, and I'm glad that a greater good was served.
No greater good was served.
JT you asked: Should slavery be legal?
Should states have the right to legalize slavery?
Should you have a right to own a slave?
My answer was "Now, JT, that is ridiculous."
Jethro, should slavery be legal? Yes or No?
Jethro, should states have the right to legalize slavery? Yes or No?
Jethro, should you have a right to own a slave? Yes or No?
"Now, JT, that is ridiculous."
What's ridiculous is that you can't answer a few simple yes or no questions.
Have a great 4th of July Jethro.
Or do you Rebels still not celebrate the 4th of July?
Well, you know I don't know if the confederacy did or not. I am about half way through the Jefferson Davis biography. I am at the point just prior to Lincoln's election. I suppose I will find out whether the confederacy recognized the 4th. My guess is they did. From what I have read Jeff saw himself as a successor to the founding fathers fighting for independence.
Then he's delusional and treasonous.
He was Saddam Huissen in the making. Who knows what kind threatening despotic regime he would have created. What mongrel hybrid of a representative republic would have emerged in the South?

You are funny, Rick. You have no clue. Keep it up you are good for a few laughs!!!!
takeone day, they don't have the power to keep
Like I said funny!!!! Maybe you should say, hmmmm, read a book?!!!!
