just curious, bedlam, where do you come to us from?

Been around for a while now. Bulletin Boards and FidoNet originally, then Usenet, Salon's Table Talk, WorldCrossing briefly, then People's Forum around a year ago.

...so many wasted evenings :)

I entered this thead because the title popped up in the recent posts list on the top level and seemed interesting. Didn't realise till a few posts upthread that it was mostly PPWC Refugees.

well, we do get occasional visitors from other areas of pf around here. especially in wampeters, foma & grandfalloons. and tell me about the wasted evenings. and days. (incidentally, this is my "away" uniform that i mentioned upthread. not too over-formatted)

So nice that you would put on your away strip for me :-)

Wasted in terms of productivity I suppose.

Most boards start off well and the interaction is great, and you learn lots from people. Eventually things change though and often devolve. I notice things around here have changed recently. Lots of posters from other boards have settled at PF after other boards closed etc. The sysop has been tearing his hair out trying to cope with cyber-vandalism and related crap behaviour.

Its good to find that hospitable corners of PF still remain!

Cheers.

So nice that you would put on your away strip for me :-)

don't think i'm gonna make a habit of it in the ppwc folder, though :)

see, i once had this online persona, namely that i was a computer generated person, and didn't really exist. a good number of the regulars in the ppwc refugee camp actually know each other in real life, and for a long time, i was an exception to that rule. until thx's wife hauled me out one time, and killed that persona. i've been searching for a new one, and while the blue and white worked for a while, i've grown tired of it. the maroon and gold are the colors of my alma mater. i kinda like them.

Fair enough...I have a low tolerance for 'hey look at me' stuff generally. Though I'm not suggesting that is your motive - but I have difficulty not taking it that way, and when it gets hard to read it just annoys. I have peoples' pictures turned off too.

i'll turn off people's pics if pages start loading really slow for me. wx has been known to have that problem on a regular basis.

I also realised that it affected how I perceived the other posters.

I prefer to have their text alone influence me .

Ares or anyone, what do you know about "Windows Protection Error"?

When booting up my PC I'd get that error and it would say to restart the PC.

I'd restart and the same thing would happen again.

I did a little research and said it had something to do with a virtual device driver.

To make a long story short the surest way to take care of it is to reinstall everything. So, that's what I started doing. I ran the recovery disc that's supposed to bring my machine back to it's original state.

I ended up freezing up several times and getting the same darn message again.

I attempted again, this time getting further in the process, then I froze up again.

Any clue?

Thanks, JT.

I forgot to mention that sometimes the PC would work, other times I'd get the error message, other times it would just freeze up on me.

windows protection error? that's a new one. can ya get more details on the problem? addresses of the fault, etc.

You've probably seen this...

Windows Protection error messages can occur under any of the following conditions:

If a real-mode driver and a protected-mode driver are in conflict.

If the registry is damaged.

If either the Win.com file or the Command.com file are infected with a virus, or if either of the files are damaged.

If a protected-mode driver is loaded from the System.ini file and the driver is already initialized.

If there is a physical input/output (I/O) address conflict or a random access memory (RAM) address conflict.

If there are incorrect complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings for a built-in peripheral device (such as cache settings, CPU timing, hard disks, and so on).

If the Plug and Play feature of the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) is not working correctly.

If the computer contains a malfunctioning cache or malfunctioning memory.

If the computer's motherboard is not working properly.

If you installed Microsoft Office 97 and you are using the Novell Client 32 software.

Do you have "system restore" ?? It's helped me alot. I know it's on Win ME and Win XP

Thanks Ian, I've read all that stuff. That's where I read that best bet is to reinstall.

I couldn't even get a boot log because the machine kept freezing at the error and saying to restart.

I tried booting in safe mode and that was no help at all.

I did that and am still having trouble.

Time to go to Dell and look at new PC's?

Except it could serve as a warning to other potential file sharing services.

a couple of years ago, after napster's debut, slashdot ran a story that was literally titled something like "recording industry loses $-2 billion due to napster". and while i think we all agree that artists deserve to get paid for their work, most people who engage in file sharing are all intelligent enough to understand that under the normal channels, the artist ain't getting paid for their work. the label is.

Wed, 07/10/2002 - 11:39 AM Permalink
THX 1138

I would argue the label deserves to get paid as much as the artist. They're the ones taking the financial risk putting out an album. Look at the recent Jacko fiasco. $30 million to produce the album with only 2 million in record sales.

Pretty crappy ROI don't ya think? And that's from a major seller like Jacko.

The issue with me is "trying before buying" versus outright stealing.

Wed, 07/10/2002 - 11:43 AM Permalink
Frosti

But Jacko hasn't really been a major seller for about 20 years now. He keeps tricking people into thinking he is. But he's not. And, if the label is stupid enough to think he is, well, we can't protect folks from making stupid choices, can we?

Wed, 07/10/2002 - 11:46 AM Permalink
THX 1138

I would agree they were stupid to spend that much dough on the likes of Jacko but, I was just using that as an example.

The issue is getting paid for their product.

I expect to get paid. Don't you?

Why are record labels any different?

It's almost a moot point because P2P file sharing is here to stay.

Wed, 07/10/2002 - 11:49 AM Permalink
ares

i'm not saying the labels don't deserve to get paid either. after all, they're the ones doing all the promoting of the disc to get it sold in the first place. the shitty part of the deal is this, and this is pretty much how recording industry deals work: say i buy a cd at big buy for 12 bucks. big buy takes 2 bucks for themselves and gives 10 bucks to the label. the label takes 9 bucks for themselves leaving a buck left over for the artist. now, this is fairly understandable. the aforementioned shitty comes in when the label requires the artist, out of their buck a disc, to pay back studio time, and everything else that went into producing that disc before they even started promoting it. and then they make you sign the rights to your work away to them as well.

the recording industry (by this i mean the big five) is an inherently evil industry that had best wake up and get with the times, because if it doesn't, its gonna die fast and its gonna die quick. and all the antics you see come out of it now are its death throes.

THX 1138

Even the newer labels that were created as an alternative to the big labels are run that same way. They have to run that way or they end up losing money.

One suggestion I would have is to stop putting so much crap out but, what I call crap is what's selling.

You and me both, JT.

take a look at who actually owns those labels, jt, and in 9 out of 10 of them, you'll find that the top-end owner is a sony or a bmg or one of the other three. i definitely agree with your suggestion. hell, half of my cd case is greatest hits out of the 80s.

The photos that I took with my digital camera were downloaded to my WIN98/ME upgrade computer. I copied them to a CD, then I was gonna copy them to XP. I get the following message:

D:/ is not accessible. Incorrect function.

I can explore the CD on the original (ME) computer.

can you read other cd's on the xp machine?

So I guess some discs work and some don't ??

Wed, 07/17/2002 - 1:32 PM Permalink

i'd consider a new cd rom drive in that case. any suffuciently new drive should have no problems reading any disc (unless its damaged, and the likelihood of you having several bad discs like that is quite small).

The PC Game Guy in the PP "Your Tech" wrote about networking. Is it really as simple as using XP, and a cable?

Wed, 07/31/2002 - 2:41 PM Permalink
ares

pretty much, yup. if you're going from computer to computer you need a crossover cable, if you're gonna use more than 3, you need one cable for each and a hub or switch. or you buy a wireless card for each and a wireless access point.

I have a lot of NIC's that I got from eBay. Are they PnP in XP and ME? I have no disks for them.

(I appreciate the answers) Thanks

Wed, 07/31/2002 - 7:06 PM Permalink
ares

maybe. maybe not. it depends on what kind they are. for the most part, if its supported in xp or me, it should be pnp, especially if they're pci bus cards. if they're older isa cards, most are supported, but i'm sure there are a lot that aren't.

what brand are they? any idea?

and you're welcome.
