But I didn't get my ass kicked. I said I ALMOST got my ass kicked.

The guy was a Southerner. He ran away screaming like a little girl.

Actually, all I did was speak without a drawl AND it utterly confused him. He'd never heard the word "WASH" used without an "R" before.

If my sisters ever read this thread I'm dead meat.

Note to self: Quit making fun of Southerners. Some of your favorite people are Southerners and your sisters can still kick your ass.

Feel the love. I have to admit though I like this thread. It's like a regular trip to the Twilight Zone where everyone has changed personalities. Except for jethro and Bill hating each other. That seems to be a universal constant.

"Twenty or thirty thousand Americans who love liberty would move to one state, possibly New Hampshire, peaceably take over the legislature, negotiate with Congress to obey their oath of office to uphold the Constitution and, if necessary, secede from the Union. "

"Liberty-loving" people are going to "take over" New Hampshire? Yeah, they love liberty. And the people of the state just supposed to go along with it?

Thanks, jethro, that is one of the funniest things I've read in awhile.

Walter Williams is going right around the bend.

From the Free State Party's Frequently asked questions:

"I love the idea of the FSP, but I only want to live someplace warm -- I'd never make it in those cold states. Can't you make a warmer state an option?"

"If wishes were weather patterns, we'd have a Free State in someplace with weather like Santa Barbara. However, while 2 warmer states -- Nevada and New Mexico -- are technically under consideration, the many factors conducive to success for our project (see Question 9) mean we will likely end up in a northern state. This is one of the sacrifices our warm-weather loving members will have to make. If weather is a deal-breaker for you, however, we still can use your help with raising awareness, recruiting, donations, etc.!"

George Washington and his men crossed that river in the winter. Come on, toughen up!

Well, jethro, I think Amy Day, a New Hampshire residenthas assembled some fine intelligence on her home state.

Nice coastline, pretty mountains. A handful of piddling state issues have lawmakers distracted and a nearby Naval Shipyard ripe for takeover.

The Granite State is a sitting duck.

You may have found your cause, jethro.

Part of the plans for the observance of the one year anniversary of September 11 in New York will be a reading of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

No word yet on any contributions from the archive of works by Jefferson Davis.

Will keep watching, though.

I'm sure among Jefferson Davis' written record are several tracts of high-minded rationalizations for treasonous activities.

No. It wasn't treason. That is why he the case against him was dismissed.

Case was dismissed they didn't want protracted trial, to make a martyr out of him.

They were afraid they would lose. How would that have looked if a jury had determined a state had the right to secede?

jethro, while i agree that secession was an inherent right of the individual state, no jury anywhere would have made that determination.

unless the bribe money was enormous.

jethro, while i agree that secession was an inherent right of the individual state, no jury anywhere would have made that determination.

Chief Justice Salmon Chase had decided along with the attorney general that Davis's case had to be held in Virginia. They determined that that is where he committed treason, if indeed treason has occurred. The fear was that the prosecution could not find 12 jurors that would convict him in Virginia. Despite what Rick might think, Davis was wildly popular in the south even after the war.

just out of curiosity, where was the more generally preferred location for that trial?

"The fear was that the prosecution could not find 12 jurors that would convict him in Virginia."

Just as I thought. It had nothing to do with constitutionality of Secession. It would be impossible for him get a fair trial in Virginia. No wonder this country needs a federal court. It's to reign in yahoo states like 1860s Virginia which would give aid and comfort to traitors.

If you could put your brain in the operate mode you might come across the thought that they couldn't find 12 jurors that believed states did not have the right to secede.
