6 minute Movie-"Searching for a cache"
Basic Info
- Buy or borrow a Global Positioning System receiver. A basic unit is the Garmin eTrex GPS or Magellan GPS 315. Both cost about $100 and can be found at stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy or online at http://www.amazon.com
- Find a cache near you at <http://www.geocaching.com> Enter a ZIP code and the site will list nearby caches. Select a cache, such as "Geocache by Ray" or "Arboretum One" and click on its "details" button. Write down the cache's coordinates and print out the description. Use the online mapping site link at the bottom of the page to get driving directions to the location.
- While still at home, enter into your GPS receiver the coordinates of the cache as they are listed on the Web site. Coordinates -- such as N 39 degrees 24.661; W degrees 094 14.86 -- describe the latitude and longitude of the site.
- Follow the driving directions until you can drive no closer to the cache and park your car. Follow the arrow on your GPS receiver as it leads you to the cache. Be aware that heavy tree cover can block the GPS signal. Once you leave your car, it could take anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to find the cache.
- The GPS signal will fluctuate once you are within 100 feet of the cache, so from that point on, you're on your own. Check around stumps and under rock and leaf piles. Remember that almost all caches are placed above ground, so no digging!
- Congratulations! You've found the cache. Take an item, leave an item and record your experience in the logbook. Reseal the cache and put it back exactly the way you found it.
When you get home, e-mail the person who hid the cache and let him know you found it. Also, post a description of your experience on the cache's online page at <http://www.geocaching.com>

well, St. Paul was always known to be more conservative than the Minneapple-so go-figure-
I thought that 'geocaching was so new that I had plenty of time to learn how to play and get involved when I had time-looks like there may be no time...for cold feet ;)

Riverview/Cherokee was NEVER Minneapolis-it has always been St Paul - I am just surprised that it was never part of West St Paul since the border is 6 blocks south away. But very glad to be in St Paul -otherwise I would be out of Ramsey County and it looks like they are most leanient on the geocaching views. but still high on taxes-thats another thread!
i didn't say you live in minneapolis. just that you're on that side of the river. hey, its called the west side even though its the south side for a reason. but we've had that discussion before.

so I won't make the 'show'. I'm beginning to get an Ares type persona-the only other geocachers I have met are Jesse and Piano_Wire_Man ... well, there was a guy in Boca, also.

I've never seen her. Don't watch TV much. Is she a regular? She didn't know if there was a deadline for this. Her photographer's geocache name is anotherfreakinalien.
She used to be the early morning helicopter traffic girl. I don't know what she does now.
i've seen her do stories on the evening news before.

Yesterday I was at the First Minnesota Cache Bash picnic. Basically, it was like a Re-Hash Bash, with hunts going on at the same time. That means I wasn't in Milwaukee watching Kris and Kollin at a scholarship bowling tournament. They bowled two blocks of 8 games, then the top 16 advance to the stepladder finals today.
Kris is +276, which is an average of about 217, and is in 5th place. He bowled a new career high game of 296.
Eleven strikes, then a nasty split. Very close to getting his first ring.

Cool stuff! I don't know where these guys find the time to do this. I'd have to wait until I was retired then I'd be too old to take part in it anyway. It does promote the GPS though.

anyone have a specific recommendation for a gps unit? i'm thinking about putting one on my christmas list. computer connectivity is of course preferred.
I told my husband that I have watching from the sidelines and if I saw you in action on October 5th that I may be in trouble with yet another hobby.
He told me about a club in Canada that used to hide a case of wine or whiskey or something somewhere in the world and people would go look for it---COOL!
That is taking 'treasure hunting' to a different level...the wealthy one. Imagine traveling around from country to country searching for it.

WoW! That's a lot of information. I forgot...what is the average cost for one of those? and does anyone rent them out? I suppose if they are inexpensive enough you can't rent them. Ares? Hurry up and buy one so I can play with it :)
You can catch an eTrex on sale for $89.00 sometimes. I've had one for a few months and just figured it out yesterday. It really helps to use the manual sometimes. The Etrex is a good 'starter' unit, and for my use, I don't need (or want) anything more deluxe.

Hey Ian. My friend says that he seen you on TV the other day promoting Geocaching. Good job. I put my name in for a raffle here at work for a GPS that their giving away next week. My chances are slim to none on getting my name picked since there tons of people who entered. The good news for me is that they tossed away a brand new GPS that didn't work. After replacing the batteries and looking up some info on the net, tada, brand new GPS for CM. My luck I'll end up winning the other model in the raffle. Cool! I've always wanted to get into this. How do I see your particular caches? Did you hide your 100th yet?
