That was a great game Ian. I wathced some of the game and the ESPN announcers were pretty quick to put a fork in them after 2 innings. I never give up on this team because they don't give up on themselves, that to me is the mark of a great team. I wathced a couple inings of the Anaheim Yanks game, the both look beatable too. If we get past Oakland we could go all the way. I am just glad to see that it looks like we will have a competitive series.
The best of all would be if we win it all and Selig has to hand us the trophy at home. Him and Carl ought to get boooed right out of town and rightfully so.
Was able to catch a few innings of Game 3 today, which occurred at about 6 a.m. I hope I don't get back to the States in time to watch the Twins go down. That would be painful.
I'm at an e-mail station at Hong Kong Airport, 13 hours from the states and about 24 more from home. Should be back in Minnepolis in time for Game 5 if there is one.
I guess it would be great to be there. I went to Game 4 of the Twins-Braves series in Atlanta. My brother-in-law finagled tickets somehow. Field level at Fulton Country Stadium. He explained how he did it a couple times, but I never got it. He has a knack for that kind of thing. I don't.
it's fun to go to a bar or just watch at home, too. That Dome gets nutty. Maybe we'll promise ourselves a trip to Spring Training if they go to the Series. That is fun. I've been to three Spring Training seasons.
Glad to hear you made it back safely and with your digestive system intact :)
Whew ! Man what a fun game and series all together. Amazing to say the least. I'm glad the final out was against Durham. He's the trash talker from The White Sox who was then traded to the A's. What's wrong Ray ? Got tired of losing to us in Chi. So you moved to the bay ? :) Snicker. Oh and David Justice and the A's manager can kiss my behind. Justice after the game said it was frustrating to lose to a team you know you're better than. Well Dave you aint that good apparently (well that's what Halle said :) And the Manager of the A's Who did the three man rotation who was quoted before the ALDS saying how he wanted to be in better posistion when they faced the Yanks in the ALCS. Ooops forgot about something, like the team that opened up a can of whoop ass on your team. Maybe you should worry about the Twins but then again with managing like yours, perhaps that's why you've gone 3 years to the ALDS and lost 3 in a row ! bye bye.
Pohlad got sprayed in the back with champagne i think by Rivas. He did need it that old goat and Selig can't kill these guys! Now if we could get to the series and have to have Selig give us the trophy that would be sweet.
O.K end of gloat.
What a team. These guys are a pleasure to watch. The Angles will be a battle no doubt but it should be fun ALCS.
Yea I heard Pohlad say something to that effect in the locker room celebration. Geez Abraham, err I mean Carl, How about celebrating the moment ? Of course this fossil was in favor of contracting too so what does that say ?
I was at a Halloween Party in the Buckhead section of Atlanta for Game 6 of the Twins -- Braves series. Rules were, you had to dress as your literary hero. I went as John Irving. I wore a wrestling suit and carried a Teddy Bear named State o' Maine.
Game was a white-knuckle affair That double play -- home to first with Hrbek and Harper, and an amazing catch by Puckett, helped bring the game to the bottom of the 10th.
Puckett steps up to the plate to face junkballer Charlie Liebrant. I swear you could see the future in Puckett's beady little eyes.
The ball's carrying out of the park, I'm screaming:
"It's going, It's going it's.....DOWNTOWN!"
The whole party of Braves fans were silent.
Afterwards, I tried to be gracious, commenting about the excitment in a general way. But one woman said as she was leving it was "interesting" having a fan of the other team at the party. I think I pissed some people off.
Last time the Twins were in the series I was in Saudi Arabia waiting for orders trying to catch updates on AFR the broadcast was delayed and we didn't get to listen to the game as a whole. It drove me nuts getting piecemeal info. Some of my buddies knew of my angst and decided to have fun with me by calling out fake game updates with the Twins down by 10 runs etc. I got even eventually but it was hard to take. I was way out numbered by Atlanta fans.
I think Chemist has a point. A lot of fans in the South grew up with college football. Nice people, but there are long, fierce and intense rivalries there.
so I decided to try ordering tickets on the internet, various times over a 3 hour period. Kept going to the Virtual Waiting Room. If I'd read my company e-mail, I'd have known a co-worker had several tickets for sale.
Hmm, if the Twins go to the World Series, maybe we can all go in together for tickets. I don't know what tickets would be available. My understanding is so far you've had to buy them in blocks. But if we bought blocks of tickets, some could go to game 1, some to game 2, some could have game 6 (if it goes that far), etc. Just a thought.
On the news last night they were saying Suites were still availible for something silly like $2,400 I think they said they hold 12-16 people but that's still alot of moolah for a ticket per person and the view from those suites looks pretty crappy to me. Maybe it's not I've never been in one but if you're going to be in a suite you might as well stay in your living room.
I love listening to baseball on the radio and all the guys at 'CCO are pretty good, I think.
Watched the run-up to the game on local news last night. I usually only watch local news when I want a good laugh. It made me sorta happy I wasn't at the Dome, not just because I have a cold. It's too crazy.
I enjoy summer games when you can just relax and watch the game. It gets hard to get involved in a game when there's so many people and so much activity. I've been buying score cards the last couple trips to the stadium just to discipline myslef to keep track of what's going on.
It's like going to mass and opening the bulletin and seeing that we are in the XX Sunday of Ordinary Time.
I like Ordinary Time. Extraordinary Time is disconcerting.
I second or third the thought on the announcers. They were horrid. I did what you guys did about the 4th inning. I kind of like hearing other peoples views of the game but I was going to throw my shoe at the T.V if I would have heard one more fricken metrodump reference. Not only that but the color commentary was the worst I've ever heard. it was nonexistant. Do a little homework guys.
Anyway. I was thouroughly impressed by Mays' performance. What a job. Remember that this is the same squad that lit up some of the best pitchers in the leauge. Nice Job Joe. I think game 2 will be a higher scoring affair but it should be fun. Tonight i won't bother with the other announcers.
Gardy said that he gave Mays the option. when he came in from the eighth.
Mays essentially said yea I could go but that's why Eddie is here and I was having a little trouble staying loose but if you want me to go I will.
Gardy said he has been around pitchers enough to know that had he come in and said hell yes i want to stay in that the pitcher was o.k or at least wanted the shot to finish. But Mays wasn't very animate about going back out so Gardy did feel that perhaps Mays was getting tired but he did give Mays the option and Mays referred to Eddie.
Mays said the same thing after the game too. I was wondering in the top of the 9th why Mays didn't come back out and was asking the same thing. It's good to see Mays didn't let his pride get the best of him and I think Gardy made the right call since Joe was waffling a bit. What a game he pitched though.
Did you guys see what Anaheim did to the Yanks ERA in the post season. I think there season average as a pitching staff was 3.53 and the series with the Angels was like 13.4. Whew.
Pat Reusse at the Strib wrote a column about Gardenhire pulling Mays in the ninth. It reiterates basically what's been said here. Seems to me he made the right decision.
I guess Guardado naturally makes a person nervous, because he looks nervous himself. He's constantly moving, and a going through facial expressions, none of which gives any comfort. If I had a choice, I'd want a closer who was 6' 4'' and grim as a gunslinger.
Guardado supposidly threw poorly in Oakland through the whole season. He's from that area, if that means anything.
If I had a choice, I'd want a closer who was 6' 4'' and grim as a gunslinger.
You mean like Percival from Anaheim ? Now that's one mean looking dude.
I think people are judging Eddie on a couple of games. Remember he has had close to 50 saves this year. That leads the A.L I believe so that's a good indicator of his talent. But he does still make me nervous. Then again in a tight game I'd be nervous no matter who was on the mound.
It's good that you let them stay up late to experience it. My kids are too young really to appreciate baseball. But it's something your kids will remember. And I have news for you, they are more than likely sleeping in class but they are also thinking how cool that was to stay up with Mom and Dad !
If you look at Eddie's stats his ERA went up considerably in September. Maybe they should Hawkins a chance in the playoffs. His ERA is lower and he did pitch more innings. I know he blew up last year but he did do the job for a while.
I tried to get to Game 5 of the Oakland series over the weekend.
I was in San Francisco for 12 hours because it was the only connection i could make. My flight left at 1 a.m. Sunday. Tickets were available for the Sunday game, but I couldn't a late Sunday night flight.
Guardado doesn't deserve to be moved or relegated from the role as closer. He carried this team through enough ninth innings to win full support.
You go over the Strib board and all you read are people who want Gardenhire to deke around with the lineup. He's not going to be able to field the Magic Lineup that will work perfectly. Anaheim's too good. They're gonna hit, they're gonna pitch.
The lineup that was good enough to get the team to where it is is good enough to start in the playoffs.
That was a great game Ian. I wathced some of the game and the ESPN announcers were pretty quick to put a fork in them after 2 innings. GO TWINS!!!!!!

You're in luck, Rick.
Hope you made/make it back safely.
I had the game on while I was working today and the twins rocked. I don't know what the final score was but it was 11 - 2 last I saw.
twins win!!!!!!! woo-hoo!!!!
so now how do I get off work at 8:00 am to go buy tickets?
Ian:
If you're not there by now, you're probably too late.
I don't.

So, how long do you all think it will be before they start pushing for a stadium again?
"We did what we're supposed to, now it's up to the fans........"
Yea I heard Pohlad say something to that effect in the locker room celebration. Geez Abraham, err I mean Carl, How about celebrating the moment ? Of course this fossil was in favor of contracting too so what does that say ?
Yea I heard Pohlad say something to that effect in the locker room celebration.
No way! Really? That was quicker than I thought.
I was sitting in Billy's on Grand when the Twins beat on the Braves. Ah yes! The good ol' days!!!!
I was at a Halloween Party in the Buckhead section of Atlanta for Game 6 of the Twins -- Braves series. Rules were, you had to dress as your literary hero. I went as John Irving. I wore a wrestling suit and carried a Teddy Bear named State o' Maine.

Why would that piss anyone off?
It's your team, big deal. I don't think you'd get pissed at her if roles were reversed.
Last time the Twins were in the series I was in Saudi Arabia waiting for orders trying to catch updates on AFR the broadcast was delayed and we didn't get to listen to the game as a whole. Oh yeah. While in Texas, don't say a bad word about the local H.S. football team.
Why the deleted post, Jethro?
Loose lips, sink ships?
No just some rememberances of the 1987 series, that's all.
so I decided to try ordering tickets on the internet, various times over a 3 hour period. Kept going to the Virtual Waiting Room. If I'd read my company e-mail, I'd have known a co-worker had several tickets for sale.
AAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH
Ian 10/8/02 3:05am
LOL.
So did you buy them from a co-worker ?
I would love to get tickets if anyone knows of any at a somewhat sane price.
Hmm, if the Twins go to the World Series, maybe we can all go in together for tickets. I don't know what tickets would be available. My understanding is so far you've had to buy them in blocks. By the time I contacted him, the tickets were sold.
Do those announcers suck, or what?
Do those announcers suck, or what?
Turn the TV sound down and turn the game on on the radio.
Much better that way.
It's good that they keep pointing out what a quirky yard the Metrodome is.
But they need to get out of New York and Los Angeles.
Need a Midwest Series this year.
I love listening to baseball on the radio and all the guys at 'CCO are pretty good, I think.

By the way Steve Lyons isn't that bad. Joe Morgan is terrible.
Put Blyleven and Bremer up in the booth.
My question is why didn't Gardenhire let Mays start the ninth? He had got the last 13 batters out. He was on a roll.
Plus this is the way that Gardenhire has managed all year long. The #1 reason Eddie had so many saves.
Gardy said that he gave Mays the option. when he came in from the eighth.
Mays essentially said yea I could go but that's why Eddie is here and I was having a little trouble staying loose but if you want me to go I will.

Sorry Chem, didn't see your post, we must have posted at the same time.
After the last few games I think instead of calling Guardardo "Everyday" Eddie he should be called "Unsteady" Eddie.
Pat Reusse at the Strib wrote a column about Gardenhire pulling Mays in the ninth. It reiterates basically what's been said here. Seems to me he made the right decision.

I've been wondering how my boys are doing in school today.
I let them stay up and watch the game so I hope they're not dozing off in class.
I know this sounds foo foo but, anyone else worried about the kids staying up late?
It's good that you let them stay up late to experience it. My kids are too young really to appreciate baseball. But it's something your kids will remember. And I have news for you, they are more than likely sleeping in class but they are also thinking how cool that was to stay up with Mom and Dad !

Hawkins used up enough chances last year to carry him into this year.
Hawkins did a good job for part of the season last year. Eddie looks like he is faultering. Maybe they should share the duty.
Guardado doesn't deserve to be moved or relegated from the role as closer. He carried this team through enough ninth innings to win full support.
