start with amazon or bn.com. you may also want to check the umn bookstore on the east bank, as they typically have all their technical non-textbooks on sale this time of the school year. i did once find a java book at lee's discount books downtown, at probably a 20% discount off of list.
Speaking of crickets. Whenever I'm at the cabin, I have the hardest time getting to sleep. It's just so dark and quiet. It drives me nuts!
Anyway, they have this car alarm that when the car is stolen, it shuts the engine down after a few blocks, locks the doors, & informs the police of where it's at with GPS.
I heard a news story about a guy that got trapped in a car he had stolen and the police just showed up and arrested the guy.
Seems he got in without breaking the window and couldn't break it from the inside to get out.
and i have the hardest time falling asleep at my grandparents' place up on the north shore. flies like crazy. i did take particular pleasure one nite when i was up there in listening to one particular fly moving back and forth in the dark. next thing i know, i her a little ping, followed by another, then silence. turns out the little bugger flew into the wall and killed itself. it gets eerily silent in the basement too when the 6 fans and god knows how many hard discs i have in the computers get shut down at the same time.
i like that there alarm, jt. i've heard about it before.
I need some advice. I know you guys will have some so here goes.
My mother's computer - a Dell with windows 98 second edition as the OS has recently been having some shutdown issues. It's about 3 years old. There are no viruses as her scanner is automatically kept up to date. The windows updates have been downloaded and installed, the hard drive has been defragged not long ago, she gets the error box that she's performed an illegal operation every now and again and if she leaves her computer for a length of time and leaves it running, the computer freezes up and needs to be rebooted.
She has no oddball software installed so I don't think it's anything like that causing the problem.
Mine does the same thing TV, and it's about the same age with the same OS. Mine's a Hewlett Packard. I recently installed a new hard drive, which seems to have made things better, since my old one was getting pretty full.
Does it happen when she's using any particular application? I've noticed that ours crashes much more frequently when we're running Compuserve.
i've generally made a habit out of reinstalling the computer from scratch once a year to 18 months or so. these days, thats a little harder to do with the servers running 24x7, but then they also don't get as much day to day application use either, so it kinda counteracts that. i'm not really the guy to be giving answers to this though; i haven't used a windows 9x system in eons. in fact my brother's roommate actually installed win2k or xp on his system so that he and i would be on the same page if he ever needed any troubleshooting over the phone.
Thanks for the input! I've got her writing down what she's doing and what she was doing everytime she has a problem. Hopefully that will give me a better idea what's causing the problems.
woohoo. got the first inquiry for my 500 dollar a day email storage service. actually, it was a spam. trying to get me to pay them to promote my web site via their search-engine listing service (as many of you who have hunted know, this really isn't necessary because my hunt talk archive is already showing up in google and other places). the only way to have gotten that email would have been to go through my contact license agreement. i'm gonna send them a bill and see what i can get. with any luck, i'll be retired by the end of the year :)
and the plot thickens. not only did this person send me one email soliciting business, she sent me 3 of them!!!! hmm. 1500 per day times 100 days left this year. yeah i think i can handle that.
anyone else know of any bugs in win2k service pack 3? i installed the thing on one of my servers here at home, and it worked great. right up to the point where i installed any device drier that looks, feels, or acts like anything scsi. in other words, any disc drive that's not attached to the main ide controllers on the mother board, or my scsi tape drive, etc. etc.
Anyone know how to copy a graph from a pdf file onto another document. You can't copy and paste or click and drag like you can on non-pdf files. Any ideas ?
I loathe Adobe. It's slow, loaded with problems and a general pain in the ass. I do have the full version of it and I still can't get it to work, oh well I was going to post some info with it but no biggie. Thanks for the help anyways fellas :)
I couldn't find Edit with Microsoft Word either. I used the Graphics Select Tool, copied an image, opened word, and pasted it in a new document. I've wanted to do that for years. Thanks guys.
Hmmmmm... Maybe it is because I have Win2000-Pro, but needless to say, I too find Acrobat(and the PDF files that go with it) a combersome, needless way to try to keep US from information.
Thanks, I still can't get it to work but I'm running 98' it's probably operator error on my part :)
And yes I concurr. Adobe to me is the lamest program for documents etc. It seems like early 90's technology to me. There's got to be a better way.
Thanks for the attempt at helping me. I think it's me or my system.
I love MAME. I used to have hundreds of games but lost them when my PC crashed. The ROM's are a lot harder to come by than they used to be so I haven't downloaded them since the crash. Plus I don't have the time anyway. :-(
shouldn't be.
Where do you find all the nifty and wierd photos Ian?

anybody know anything about JBuilder for Java?
I finally got my stolen car back from the shop.
Now, to help prevent this from happening again.
Any suggestions on car alarms?
I saw a pretty cool Alpine at Audio King for $349 installed.
I've heard good things about Viper alarms, but don't know much about car alarms as a whole.
Yeah, I've heard of Viper. They seem to be a bit more expensive.
I just need something that will go off if they smash my window again.
:-)
Like I said, I'm pretty ignorant about them. Except that they're annoying as heck when the owner doesn't shut them off immediately.
I heard a good analogy about car alarms once. They were referred to as the urban cricket. Not saying one wouldn't help of course.
I never wanted to climb out of bed at 2 am and go scream at a cricket.
i have.
bumpkin. ;-)

Well, I just hope it doesn't get stolen again before I get one installed.
If it does, those bastards just better keep the damn thing!

Could be just about anything.

I had MS Office 2000 installed on my Win/98 machine and it was causing all sort of similiar problems. Once I removed it, it's been fine.
A few times I've had to wipe my hard drive and start all over.

What have you been using?
My Dad gave me an ME disk that he's not using so I thought I'd try installing it when I get a chance.
I thought maybe then I wouldn't have my Office 2000 problems.
Any thoughts?
i've migrated my way up through nt4, 2k pro, and now xp pro.
The ME/upgrade stopped all problems on the one computer.

Ares, I don't have a clue.
Luv, I don't use PDF's very often but, you could try clicking the "Text Select Tool" button and see if that will let you copy/paste it.
I did, I did the text select and the graphics select button but I can't paste it onto a post or even a word document. I'm stumped.
that's one of those things that you may need the full acrobat to do, not just the reader. though i can't imagine why that would be the case.
I loathe Adobe. It's slow, loaded with problems and a general pain in the ass. I do have the full version of it and I still can't get it to work, oh well I was going to post some info with it but no biggie. Thanks for the help anyways fellas :)
I couldn't get it to work either.
I only have the reader.
Well if you guys can't figure it out, I'm not even gonna look.
Come on Frosti!
You could at least try.
You could at least try.
But what's the point? ;-)
I don't see the "Edit with MS Word" option but I've only got the reader.
Bill,
Ahh ha, o.k cool I'll give it a try, thanks.

Wow, even ares is impressed with it and he's just a young whippersnapper.
He probably wasn't even born when Asteroids or Space Invaders first came out.
