OK-this I buy....

CRAPSis a dice game played inside a large sunken table not unlike a bathtub, on which is painted a rather complicated looking layout. There are no seats around the table because the game is played standing up. The player rolling the dice is called the SHOOTER. Across the table, closest to the pit, the dealer's side), are the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10, painted is squares, and called the BOX NUMBERS. To the left of these numbers is another box with the words, "DON'T COME BAR 12" with a picture of two dice showing sixes on them, (the combination known as BOX CARS).Between these numbers are the PASS and DON'T PASS lines, in a large area with the word COME on it. Between this and the PASS lines is an area marked FIELD, with the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12. In the corner of this layout , is the BIG 6 and BIG 8. In the center of the table is a betting area marked HARDWAY BETS, for the numbers 4, 6, 8, and 10. Just above this center layout is an area marked ANY 7. Below the center HARDWAY layout is a combination of symbols for one roll bets, and to each side of this center layout are rows of two CIRCLES, one beside the other in staggered formation, each circle alternately marked with a 'C' or 'E', (C=CRAPS and E=ELEVEN).

How the Game is Played
The Casino game of CRAPS is played with a set of two perfectly balance dice, red in color, each die with six faces numbered 1 through 6 by means of white dots. The SHOOTER must toss both dice from one of the short ends of the table to the other, making sure that both dice hit the opposite side wall of the table. The inside walls of the table are covered with a kind of serrated egg-carton foam, designed to make the dice bounce around to assure randomness. Each throw of the dice is called a ROLL. The first roll is called the COME-OUT roll. When the previous SHOOTER fails to make a winning roll, known as NOT MAKING THE POINT or SEVEN OUT. A new game then begins with a new SHOOTER directly next to the left of the previous SHOOTER. On the COME-OUT roll, the PASS line bet wins if the SHOOTER rolls a 7 or an 11. The bet loses automatically if the SHOOTER roll a 2, 3, or 12, (this is known as ROLLING CRAPS). If the SHOOTER rolls either 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 0r 10, winning your bet now depends on the SHOOTER rolling the same number again BEFORE ROLLING ANY 7. Rolling any of these numbers on the COME-OUT ROLL is called ESTABLISHING THE POINT. Establishing a point is an event that happens as the immediate result of the COME-OUT roll, unless that COME-OUT roll results in a 7, 11, 2, 3, or a 12, in which case more rolls must be made until a point it is establish. A devise that looks like a hockey puck, called THE PUCK, is white on one side and black on the other side. The PUCK (white side) is on the point until the SHOOTER either makes his point or sevens out. When this happens the PUCK is moved to the DON'T COME bar 12 area, and turned black side up. White side up over a point indicates the game is in progress and that this BOX numberis the point. Black side up means a new COME-OUT roll is next.

Clue #1
The first one of the year
Was found by the King
Now go to a park in St. Paul
And find the thing

Clue #2

Now “Old Hickory”, if you studied history
Was General Andrew Jackson’s informal title
Another Jackson may help solve this mystery
But keeping sight of the General’s moniker is vital

Clue #3

There has been treasure
In this park before
But there are only three ways
For one to keep score.

Clue #4

Thirty to forty, forty to thirty
This clue may seem confusing
Remember that in the end
We'll think this hunt was rather amusing

Clue #5

Roll the dice
Its one in six
Box it out
and you'll have your sticks.

Quick thoughts now that the 2 hour voting line is done. I was last for my polling spot! Whew!

#1 - St. Paul Park (maybe roll a marley while you're looking)

#2 - I don't think the stone wall thing is what he's planning. Maybe Jackson as a street or name like Michael or Bo or something to do with the number 20 or a Hickory tree

#3 - Previously found in the park. Either 3 score boards or only 3 actual ways for the sport itself to be scored. Offbeat thought- 3 ways to keep score: scratch a notch in something, musical composition or acquire something like points or items.
Others I like but might not be relevant - To succeed in seducing someone sexually.
To succeed in buying or obtaining an illicit drug

#4 - Speed Limit signs around the park increase and decrease, dead end street. (Phalen?)

#5 - Smoke Stacks with plumes of black smoke coming out of them. Not totally sure on the dice thing yet. I have a stretch of being by a water treatment plant (craps) ;-) or by train tracks (box cars)
Sticks ?

My first guess at this point, with not a lot of confidence, is Newell.

Tue, 11/05/2002 - 10:48 PM Permalink
Terry

The parks that I can think of that would have the change in speed near by would be Newell (Pierce Butler = 40, Fairview = 30) or Phalen where Arcade speed limits change. There's also the possibility of 3240 or 4230 type addresses...but that wouldn't be near Newell nor Phalen if memory serves me correctly.

The box car thing would put it near railroad tracks. That could be McMurray field or Newell for sure. There's railroad tracks visible from Cherokee and Mounds too. I'll have to think about other parks with railroad tracks - or could it be trolley/street car tracks?

Chair-O-Key?, IM?

You can see train tracks and smoke stacks from both.

But there are only three ways For one to keep score

The big 3 sided #1 on the 1st bank downtown is also visible from both parks.
(it wouldn't be a hunt without reference to the big #1 now would it?)

Common people, where's the noodling here? How about some more input?

Hi Clue Master

The big 3 sided #1 on the 1st bank downtown is also visible from both parks.
(it wouldn't be a hunt without reference to the big #1 now would it?)

I like that. I like the 30-40 being a speed limit.

Smoke stacks could be the smoke that comes from trains smokestack. which then could be IM or BC! you woulnt have to see the NSP smokestack.

The 'sticks' bug me... what about the birds nest ontop of the NSP plant -it may have sticks.

or CRAPS could be the dogpound :) or a dog on leash sign

Claven was a postman -it could be under a mailbox or near a postoffice.

a deck could be a lookout point/observation deck.

I took the cliffs as an obvious clue plus you can see the post office from IM, but does 'watch' have anything to do with it too? Maybe the beacon at IM? I'm stuck on the sticks too. I like the poop idea tho me2. Maybe something smelly too? The breeze from SSP (sorry Pawlenty)

Reaching: Sticks= Stuck to something?

MK - Please don't associate my initials with CoMo. I look at Como the same way I look at the Packers. It may be their year but I don't have to like or accept it. 8-)

Art can picture a yellow sign with a black arrow pointing to the right at Newell on pierce buttler.I see others at other prospecting parks too.

Terry

Hello!

I got out of work earlier than expected today...and Inks got out early too so we spent sometime scouting some parks with cliffs or bluffs.

Went through Cherokee, IM, and HI.

Cherokee has a Bruce Vento Wildlife viewing area that has arrows pointing to the right or straight ahead depending on what sign you're looking at - but no left arrow. Also, coming off the high bridge, the sign to Cherokee Ave. has a right pointing arrow. BTW - High bridge speed is 40 that reduces to 30.

IM has the Kellogg Bridge that goes from 40 to 30. There are arrows pointing to the bike or walking paths. Some were straight ahead and others were to the right - but no left arrows.

Harriet Island was interesting with the bluffs/cliffs behind us and some one-way turn-a-bouts near the yacht club and then again over by the pavillion. There's also railroad tracks that are still imbedded in the street there - but go nowhere.

Then after we got busy doing some stuff for my Mother, I got to thinking about Hidden Falls and the bluffs there. I know there's some arrows there around that one triangular islandy thing where the Winter Carnival medallion was found in that diaper that one year.

Wed, 11/06/2002 - 7:23 PM Permalink
ares

me2 and i pretty much found the same set of things you and inks did, terry. the weird thing about the vento wildlife viewing area, and we found this out because we walked a good deal of it, was that most of that is actually in mendota heights, even though theres a saint paul parks & rec trash can at the entrance to it.

has anyone else noticed the lack of rhyming in this clue? i mean to make it work, it ought to be none to the left/one to the right/look for an arrow/near the treasure site. gotta wonder if that's significant.

Wed, 11/06/2002 - 7:57 PM Permalink
Terry

Ares - I figure if it's actually there, it would be on the St. Paul side of things - not over the line of double division.

Wed, 11/06/2002 - 8:02 PM Permalink
ares

and it only takes a few steps in there to put you past the line of double division.

Wed, 11/06/2002 - 8:24 PM Permalink
Terry

I realize that - and I don't think it's "in" that area - but maybe near there - if it's at Cherokee at all.

Being up in IM today, I was struck by the sight of all the box cars visible from there.

In fact at both IM and Cherokee, I found it interesting to see how the view changed since the last time we were trekking through there during the summer. Leafless trees make quite a difference.
