Does anyone not have plans for New Year's Eve yet? I'm having a party at my place with my singles club, but it seems to me we could always use more people. I think the weather will be just warm enough for a bonfire, but if not we'll still have a fire in the fireplace. Just let me know if you want to know any more about it.

Also, remember we have the murder mystery weekend up north in Two Harbors at the end of February. I need to know who is interested in that.

We always have a bonfire during our annual New Years Eve parties. I highly recommend it. Regardless of how cold it is, everyone seems to like celebrating the outdoors and fireworks in the middle of winter. Kinda like the Winter Carnival.

Forepaugh's is an excellent restaurant. I've only eaten there once, but it was superb.

When we first heard the fireworks, I thought it was thunder. We could see them from our back porch windows. Very nice display.

AW... me and Shaggs are contemplating coming to your singles party on New Years... but we gotta couple questions for ya...

First off... is face paint allowed? If not.. we'll prolly still show... but we gotta know that anyhow.

Is there gonna be any Pizza? Cause if not, we're gonna be ordering one when/if we show up... (if you do have any, make sure theres no anchovies)

Will there be enough beer/alchoholic beverages to go around? Cause if not, we'll probably just bring our own, so we dont gotta take everybody else's stuff.

where's this shindig goin down at, exactly, and how do we find the place?

Aight... I think thats about it.

I don't know, it hasn't really come up before. ;-) My guess is that since most of the people there will be over 30, they might not be that familiar with ICP and wouldn't quite understand what it was about. I'm also not sure what effect the heat of the bonfire would have on the makeup. But it would certainly add some atmosphere. (Dang, where were you when I had my Halloween party? There's a few people in the group afraid of clowns we could have had fun with!)

Is there gonna be any Pizza? Cause if not, we're gonna be ordering one when/if we show up... (if you do have any, make sure theres no anchovies)

I have some frozen pizzas. Otherwise the party wasn't going to start until 7, so I wasn't going to worry about dinner. But if you want to bring pizza, that would be fine. I doubt anyone would complain. hehe

Will there be enough beer/alchoholic beverages to go around? Cause if not, we'll probably just bring our own, so we dont gotta take everybody else's stuff.

I have a bunch of random stuff leftover from the Christmas party a week ago and since I don't drink, someone's got to use it up. But if you're picky about your alcohol, then you may want to bring what you like to drink.

where's this shindig goin down at, exactly, and how do we find the place?

It's down in Cottage Grove. If you want to give me an email I'll send you the directions. And if you do come, remember to bring something that represents something from the past year that you want to forget that you can throw in the fire.

I got the neatest gift ever for X-mas this year, my grandmothers family wrote a little book on some of the history of our family and has some stuff in it about how they lived in a house that was torn down and is now railroad island. they also lived in swede hollow on the hill where noble engineering is now.

That is a most excellent gift LL! What a treasure!

The party sounds like a good time AW! Marley and I will be up north for the New Year, prob'ly go out for dinner and a couple drinks. Now that you mention it tho, if its not snowing it would be cooler to have a bonfire outside.

I'd really like to go to the murder mystery weekend, but I'm committed to working from Feb 17- Apr 1 and on call weekends. I'd like to say maybe, but wouldn't know till the last minute and I know you need a definite confirmation. Hopefully there will be another sometime in the future.

Goodmorning! or is it afternoon already? some of us are still on vacation and still in jammies ;p

I never heard the fireworks last night! I was around the house doing laundry - cleaning up -watched Seinfeld. bummer-I always like to see the fireworks- um, oh that was Saturday night- I was out at Hoggsbreath -no wonder I never heard them!

Yeah - Vikings won!

AW - I need to touch base with you on a few things - how about connecting around the 3-5th -even by phone is fine- not only has it been hectic around here but now that things have slowed down I am terribly worn out tired -sleeping 11-12 hours a night lately! :(
I need to get my energy back before the hunt-

I loved Forepaugh's

I was always afraid to go there cause everyime we drive by the place there are limo's and fancy cars. I finally got a nice dress I could wear there and some shoes too ;)

FOR CHRISTMAS I GOT 3 PAIRS OF SLIPPIES FOR THE HUNT :)
AND A STARTER FOR MY 'GREEN MONSTER' - perfect for the hunt too :)

Hi all,

I was just thinking. Should I rename the "PPWC Refugees" to something more easily found by newbies here in the list of members folders?

I was talking to a hunter yesterday and she was trying to register for this site, but it kept giving her a registration failure notice, without saying what exactly was actually wrong. I even tried doing it for her and got the same message. Any idea what the problem might be? Her user name shouldn't have been taken as it was rather obscure, her password was as long as mine, and her email was valid. The only think I can think of is maybe she registered at some previous point and forgot and that it won't let you register more than once from the same, now I'm spacing out and can't remember what it's called, IPS number?

I'd ask Lance on that one. There were some other people having trouble recently.

IP address shouldn't matter. I've signed up for a total of three accounts from the same IP.

THX- changing the name sounds like a good idea. The obvious choice would be Cooler Crew. Maybe Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt or St. Paul Medallion Hunt would work as a temporary name change?

Hi Ter! I second that!

Have a fun and safe New Years Eve everybody!

i've always been kinda partial to ppwc refugee camp, myself. but as timmers said, expand the name fully for it. make it just a touch more recognisable. most importantly about that, we have to get links into pf from all the sites we ourselves have control over that are treasure hunting related that people will know about. kings commons, aw's yahoo group, and those places. possibly get a hold of steve and have him put a link up on the tthg site. like cm said about having as many hunters as possible, we need as many of them as possible posting here.

Would the Pioneer Press object to this forum using their name? How about "The ORIGINAL Pioneer Press Water Cooler"? or "former" to distinguish from anything they might be using now? Do they even have one now?

Wed, 01/01/2003 - 9:04 AM Permalink

yeah they've got something they're using right now. here's a link to it. the format very much sucks, not being conducive at all to slogging during the hunt, and as you can see, there is no hunt talk thread there. Heck, we could just call it the water cooler to be simple.

should we care if the pp cares if we use their name? after all, they more or less abandoned us in the first place.

I m a little late with the bad news from the North Pole. It doesn't look to have affected us here in Minnesota, but here it is...

Subject: Special Announcement from Santa Claus

I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will no longer serve the States of Georgia, Florida, Virginia, North and South Carolina,Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas on Christmas Eve. Due to the overwhelming current population of the earth, my contract was renegotiated by North American Fairies and Elves Local 209.

As part of the new and better contract, I also get longer breaks for milk and cookies so keep that in mind. However, I'm certain that your children will be in good hands with your local replacement, who happens to be my third cousin, Bubba Claus.

His side of the family is from the South Pole. He shares my goal of delivering toys to all the good boys and girls; however, there are a few differences between us. Some of our differences are listed below.

1. There is no danger of the Grinch stealing your presents from Bubba Claus. He has a gun rack on his sleigh and a bumper sticker that reads: "These toys insured by Smith and Wesson."

2. Instead of milk and cookies, Bubba Claus prefers that children leave an RC cola and pork rinds [or a moon pie] on the fireplace. And Bubba doesn't smoke a pipe. He dips a little snuff though, so please have an empty spit can handy.

3. Bubba Claus' sleigh is pulled by floppy-eared, flyin' coon dogs instead of reindeer. I made the mistake of loaning him a couple of my reindeer one time, and Blitzen's head now overlooks Bubba's fireplace.

4. You won't hear "On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner, and Blitzen..." when Bubba Claus arrives. Instead, you'll hear, "On Earnhardt, on Andretti, on Elliott and Petty."

5. "Ho, Ho, Ho" has been replaced by "Yee Haw" And you also are likely to hear Bubba's elves respond, "I her'd dat"

6. As required by Southern highway laws, Bubba Claus' sleigh does have a Yosemite Sam safety triangle on the back with the words "Back Off."

7. The usual Christmas movie classics such as "Miracle on 34th Street" and "It's a Wonderful Life" will not be shown in your negotiated viewing area. Instead, you'll see "Boss Hogg Saves Christmas" and "Smokey and the Bandit IV" featuring Burt Reynolds as Bubba Claus and dozens of state patrol cars crashing into each other.

And Finally,

8. Bubba Claus doesn't wear a belt. If I were you, I'd make sure you, the wife, and the kids turn the other way when he bends over to put presents under the tree.

Sincerely Yours, Santa Claus

Thanks for posting Santa's announcement me2. Too bad for those southern folk.

I personally don't think that any name change would make any difference for new members at all. I assume that the main way they will even know about this site is from a link posting from one of us. I don't perceive anyone just stumbling into PF looking for the Water Cooler. We could call it anything and they'll either stay or leave.

Good Morning!

My thought about any name change here...

If the PPWC Refugees was expanded to words vs. the initials, that would make it easy to find and shouldn't cause any issues with the Pioneer Press.

We should remember that it wasn't the Pioneer Press that abandoned us, it was Knight-Ridder. The Pioneer Press had no choice in the matter. And the Pioneer Press still posts the clues and is supplying part of the prize money.

Its nice to have the name spelled out just in case. Otherwise, we will just have to spread the word in othter ways, such as links from all the sites that one of us has control of and personal invitations. I can't wait!

Thu, 01/02/2003 - 11:02 AM Permalink

well, tim, several of us are working on just that in the background here. trying to figure out how to promote the place. the last thing i wanna do is tell people to go to peoplesforum.com then click on member folders, then find us, etc. i'm thinking spreading the word on one or more of the web sites we have control over ourselves is probably the best way to go about it, and then pointing people to those sites.

Thats exactly the path that I was thinking Ares. "Business" cards with helpful websites on them to pass out in the parks would be cool. That would also help the other sites get some traffic as well.

so i guess the question then becomes, who all wants a stack of the suckers when i get them printed to hand out in the parks?

so, any bets on how long my kid is gonna be in totem town? yup, he did it again! except this time he did it big.......he shot out the window of a small store with a B.B. gun and went in and stole 3 cartons of cigs, shot at a guy on the sidewalk, shot out a house window and a car window and the cars driving down the free-way and my moms boyfriends dog! called his P.O. and she said as soon as we get a court date hes outa here. oh, and we also found out he was the one that busted our bedroom window on X-Mas eve, which explains why nothing was taken.

I'm sure we could pass out some business type cards, Ares.

Regarding who, what, where links to this site should be:

Why not have links from related sites as well as the URL to this site on the business cards? The PP folks shouldn't have a problem with it as they are the ones that had to pull the plug on the forums at their site. The bottom line to them has to be the people participating at their daily events while waiting for the paper and the hunt itself. I'm sure they don't care where we chat about it.

Thu, 01/02/2003 - 4:53 PM Permalink
Terry

LL - You know, that kid of yours is very lucky. Running around shooting up stuff - even if it's a BB gun - could get a person shot and questions asked later. Totem Town is better than some alternatives if you think about it that way.

I'm truly sorry that you are going through all that. It's so hard to see your kid screw up like that.

i'm just concerned that the links in this site are incredibly cryptic to type as opposed to some of the other sites out there.

I agree with ares, It's cool to post a link on the web directly here because the addy can be hidden, but it would be too cryptic to put on a business card.

I know if I saw the cryptic addy for this site on a business card, I'd just throw the card away.
