Actually the worst case scenario is that there's no snow at the start of the hunt, they hide it extra well because there isn't any snow, and then around clue #5 we get dumped on and now have to search through the snow plus whatever else they did to hide it.

Worst case or best case? That doesn't sound too bad :-) But if there isn't any snow, some of us have certainly had some recent experience and a possible advantage.
AND also sticking my hand up under the timepiece and still not getting it!
and living within 400 feet of it but knowing I would NEVER open a dirty diaper-done enough of that in my lifetime BUT matched up all those clues! another "you can see everything from right here"!
I was pretty happy with being that close all 3 times!
BUT NOW -It's time to get down to business!!!! Isn't there a song like that...'get down, get down, get down' or something in Risky Business? ::Me2 is putting on her shades:: she means BUSINESS!
AND also sticking my hand up under the timepiece and still not getting it!
That's why I feel that Jake has a good chance at finding it before the rest of us. We all felt under that clock and knew it was in that area, but we just didn't look hard enough. I think we all learned a little lesson that night in that looking very hard in a small place is better than just grazing over a large area. This way you we don't get that feeling that me2 is talking about. Nothing worse than searching right where the medallion was and not finding it. Hopefully there won't be those jokesters out there that put a diaper that is actually soiled just to watch devoted hunters like us search through it. Hey, there's an idea... "rubs hands together in evil motion"
the one consolation i have from the clock tower is that it actually took jake sticking his hand up there twice to find it too. (dear god, that sounds bad).
Ha!LMAO (picturing Ares in full scrubs surgical mask and latex gloves with a headlight on his forehead, Me2 standing by in Pjs and slippers ready to hand him sterilized hunting tools) "Allright J. this is it, I'm going in. Garden claw....scalpel..."
So whats the skinny on McGoverns? Anyone know? What time does it usually start, or is it whenever? Upstairs or down? Does someone need to get ahold of them and tell them we're coming? Who usually does that?
Oh, and CoolerCrew buttons! Are you designing them this year Ter? Or is Mom? Was thinking maybe we could incorporate your design into the bumper stickers. Any thoughts?
Mom has come up with a design for the cooler crew buttons. I just saw it today...and it's going to be way, way cooler! Once we get it locked down and done, I'm sure we'd be happy to share it with you. I knew we had talked about that last year and I mentioned that to Mom in an email today. Hard to say exactly when they'll be done. There's some tweaking to do yet.
This no snow thing really irks me....At this point, if we don't get a massive snowfall they might as well bury it on the beach at Phalen..at least we can dig something up!....THINK POSITIVE THOUGHTS.....SNOW...SNOW....SNOW...SNOW!!!!
I wouldn't mind it being really hard to find, I just hate when it is really easy. I think the harder it is, the more of an advantage us "diehard" hunters have. Same thing with the clues, if the clues ever become tougher and tougher and more obscure, I am sure the cooler crew will have it locked down.
And you guys are right about Jake having the hunting strategy down. The one thing that we said we never wanted to do was dig where the medallion was and miss it. I would go nuts for sure if that happened. Plus, you feel like you have gotten something accomplished when you "clear" an entire area.
I just realised that the Como hunt could be the best hunt I ever have in terms of time in the correct park and closest to the medallion. That is a harsh reality to me, because I was hoping I would keep getting closer and closer. Oh well. This year, no "resting" for me. I am gonna waste as much energy as I can!
Part of the experience of the hunt is to get out there in the parks and MOVE SOME SNOW!!!! Digging in areas and finding that so-called "false alarm" object is what triggers that internal fire to find the coveted bounty.
hey guys. i remember this happening last year. anyone wanna take bets on whether or not i won't be at the pre-dig gig because i'm in too much pain? from skiing afton the nite before? for the second year in a row? anyone? even if i tell ya that i conveniently used the pain last year as a cover for wanting to maintain my total anonymity? how bout if i mention i'm probably gonna be up at spirit mountain this sunday so i'll be hit with afton's skiing 2 weeks after that skiing?
I bet that your "total anonymity" has already been blown and you are going to come to the pre-dig gig whether in pain or not, because you are addicted to the medallion hunt, and the pre-dig gig is like a fix for us addicts.
Well just don't go skiing. Well I suppose I'm not one to talk since I won't be there anyway. But remember, people are welcome to come over to my place the next day and ponder clue #1 in the hot tub.
sorry, aw. no way in hell am i not gonna go skiing that nite. it was either then, or during the day saturday. and me2's sister said she'd rather go skiing at nite so that decision was pretty easy. i'm pretty sure though that i'll tag along on the free lesson she gets from the ski rental.
however. as a result of said skiing i may well take you up on pondering clue 1 in the hot tub!
timmers, my anonymity was blown wednesday nite during the last hunt. scribe managed to get me out in line at the pp that nite. and i've been out for every mock hunt this summer.
yeah right whos this ares guy never seen this guy/girl all summer long and I was most diffenitly at every mock hunt!Wed night at the pp last year nop! no way!! hmmmmmm ares? : > ) ehehhehe
I'm in the process of updating the Web site. I'm going to get rid of the pop-ups that everyone seems to be having problems with. I going to put it in frames instead. Hopefully, this will be more user friendly.
I'm also wondering where I send people to chat. I'd assume this is the place. Does the PP have a bulletin board on their new site. If they do, I can't seem to find it.
What up with the pre-dig gig? Where's Green? Where Greg Sax and the Cooler Crew web site?
Anyone who has any of the above info, please respond. Looking forward to seeing everyone at McGoverns on the 18th.
the pp, at the direction of knight-ridder stopped paying for coolercrew.com. marley is at the moment fielding questions related to it, and its pseudo replacement. the pp has a bulletin board so to speak on the new site, but it sucks, and they don't yet have a thread for the medallion hunt. i posted a link to it in the shoot the breeze thread yesterday or the day before. green hasn't been seen around these parts since last february. greg never even knew about pf, and i'll let me2 field any questions with him. in the meantime, i say definitely send people here to chat. one of these days i'm gonna make up little business card thingys with links to here on them. just to pass out to hunters in line and in the parks. no word yet on the pre-dig, but its pretty safe to assume that there will be one.
As far as here at PeoplesForum, I suggest linking to the higher level folder that contains the medallion hunt threads: St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion Hunt
It is crucial, however, that you remove the stuff in between the two @ symbols when you link. it could let someone log in to pf as you.
I think the pre-dig-gig is still on for McGoverns.
Haven't seen Green.
CoolerCrew.com is gone. I believe Ma press didn't want to sponsor it anymore.
For the past five years, I've looked to the Pioneer Press and pioneerplanet.com for info concerning my favorite winter activity-the Medallion Hunt. I have not been able to locate the website with the historical information, such as past clues, locations, etc. There also used to be a very helpful Forum for discussion. Because of these resources, my family gained a new interest in the Winter Carnival. Can I get any info on where to locate these sites?
Pioneer Press taking away any avenues for which treasure hunters can communicate, i.e. removing the water cooler tells me that they don't like us bashing them for their incompetent clue writing.........Just a thought.....
Speaking of the horrible clues, and horrible hiding of the medallion, I hope they switched the person after last years horrible hunt. OR I hope the person is "mad" that the hunt was so short and tries to make this hunt go especially long, as some predicted was the case when it was at Como after Newell. Also, the hider may be under pressure to prolong the hunt at least to the weekend for promotional purposes. Who knows. All I know is I can't wait 17 days, and at the same time I am dreading 17 days, if we don't get a buttload of snow, and quick.
Boy, can't a guy get an idiot edit in before somebody notices? ;-) I thought I could of covered that one up fast enough. I then edited it to ask where the preferences were and then noticed that they were at the bottom. Thanks anyway pal.
Do you have a way of getting notified when one of your threads are posted upon?
I like this "invitational" board. Keeps the riff raff out. Let's push for it to be our exclusive posting site. Perhaps we could punish those of us who give away the store on other boards....snow down the pants for every posted tip to the newbies and lurkers?
Then again...we will honor those who steer the lurkers to the Fair Grounds.
welcome back, map guy. btw, you need to send an egram to lance brown to change your officially registered email address at pf to whatever the new one is. i know ian and i looked it up. can't remember what it is though off hand :)
oh, and what's even better about this place, is that we've got total control over it. if mr. news shows up, me, or scribe, or thx, or a couple of others can bounce him instantly!

Sounds cooler Ter!
Ares-No, not trying to step on Dals toes :-)I can't help the pictures that pop into my head! What you wrote put it there ;-)
damn. i hate it when that happens. :)
I think Green used to do the organizing for the thing at McGovern's. I'd do it, but I won't even be there.

Hey MMH,
Here's the Pioneer Press discussion threads:

It's very slow and the format sucks.

Its going to be in Roseville. OR Battle Creek.

FYI: Knight Ridder switched over all their papers over to the new discussion format at the same time.

buttload of snow
Wouldn't that still make it a brown medallion hunt though? ;-)
Favorite Number Joe! #17 got me $15 with just the Powerball this last time with a 5X Power Play.
its over on the right hand side. :)

Hey map guy,
Could you shrink down your image just a bit?
No offense but, that's a rather large..... map you've got there.
It's a bit distracting, if you know what I mean?
::wink, wink, nudge, nudge::
btw: Good to see ya!
You know what they say about a guy who needs a big map?
