I knew a friend of mine had read it so I called her up and asked. I had to wait until she called back which is why I didn't answer right away.

My current take:

1) Personal dig at us, hidden amongst sticker bushes, can see the Cathedral from the park

2) Either see the actual Capitol dome or a sign that has the word or pix of the Capitol

3)Covington Inn (thanks me2), lEvEE

4) North Star Ice, Freedom bridge flags

5) Jail, #1 (2 or 3 sides, "this one'syours to keep)

6) Under a bridge or covered out of view

7) Mississippi

8) Walk down a path away from the park past a bait shop

9) Jus Tus Ohage

10) The Carousel restaurant on top of the Radisson

11) High Bridge? Raspberry? Old Navy?

1848
The City of Saint Paul is platted. The original 90.5 acre plat does not include Harriet Island.

1858
Harriet Island is annexed into the city.

1892
Unsupervised swimming on the downtown stretch of the Mississippi results in an average of 15 to 20 drownings a year.

1900
Dr. Justus Ohage raised $8000 through donations ($700 in pennies from children) and mortgaging his house to acquire Harriet Island and build two bath houses, a refreshment pavilion, gardens, and walking and riding trails.

1900
May 26 - Ohage presents Harriet Island and its facilities to the City with the only stipulation that “the institution should always be managed by the Health Department without political interference, and that it should be conducted solely as a place of wholesome recreation, free of money-making musement features.”

1901
More bath houses and tennis courts are added, as well as a new pavilion seating 2000, a bandstand, a small zoo, a children’s playground, and gymnasium apparatus are added.

1904
A cyclone on August 20th and the high water during the month of July, 1905, combine to cause $50,000 in damage to the buildings and park on the island.

1910
The baths were used 257,757 times in 1910. In the following decade, an average of 400,000 used the baths each year.

1916
The Winter Carnival builds an ice castle on Harriet Island.

1920
Because of pollution, the baths, which had been opened to promote public health, are closed to protect the public health.

1929
Half the island is flooded, endangering the animals in the zoo.

1930
Because of flooding and a general decline in the zoo’s maintenance, the animals are moved to the new zoo at Como Park.

1940
The City’s architect, Clarence W. Wigington, plans a new pavilion. Wigington is the first African-American municipal in the United States.

1942
 The new pavilion opens.

1948
Soil from part of the island is dredged to make harbor improvements.

1949
The dredged soil is used to fill the island’s back channel, permanently connecting it to the West Side.

1955
The Pioneer Press refers to Harriet Island as “now one of the city’s lesser used parks.”

1964
The first Harriet Island/West Side Levee was completed. Floods never topped the levee, but came within one foot in 1965 and within two feet in 1969. An additional four feet was added in 1995, and the levee was extended to 7400 feet.

1970
Captain Bill Bowell begins operating the Jonathan Padelford on the Harriet Island waterfront.

1975
Winter Carnival Ice Castle is on Harriet Island

1986
Through the mid-1980s Riverfeast draws 200,000 annually for outdoor musical entertainment, food, rides, and cultural attractions.

1988
Winter Carnival Ice Castle is on Harriet Island.

1992
Winter Carnival Ice Palace on Harriet Island is seen by millions worldwide as part of the televised coverage of the Super Bowl at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

1996
A new bicycle trail link is completed from Harriet Island Park into Lilydale.

1996
A new 600-foot-long public dock is completed, providing mooring for transient boaters and inviting the public to stroll on the dock.

1996
The motor vessel Covington is docked at Harriet Island. The large tug boat has been converted into a floating bed and breakfast hotel and houses the No Wake Café.

1997
Saint Paul determines to press for completing implementation of Harriet Island Regional Park in two to three years, rather than the 15 years originally envisioned.

I finally saw the other side of the Medallionator. Does that bother you, J. ?? After all you did for Jake in the past?

This is something that's bothered me a while. I don't think everything has to be visible from the spot where the medallion is hidden. This is the
hunt
that got me interested. The way I remember it: Each clue brought you closer to the area. You couldn't see everything from the site. Couldn't this be year be like that ?

0 for 1 in 2003. Not that they really had much of a chance with this hunt. But I will give Jake credit. He really put in the time and effort to make him worthy of winning it. I doubt anyone spent more time outside in this weather digging through parks than he did.

ThoseMedallingKids

I do have to wonder though. After this year, where they put it, are they going to have everyone searching every conceivable place now? Just imagine if it were down in Hidden Falls, where people might be digging.

Thu, 01/30/2003 - 1:24 AM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I suspect they will take a little flack for where they put it, but still, the precedent has been set. In years where there is snow, it may be less of an issue.

Oh, I know it will. It's just the morons, who destroy, don't seek that ruin it for the rest of us. Those are the ones I'm worried about. And on that note, I'm taking this wearied noodle to bed.

Well I certainly couldn't keep track of everyone, but I know he was out there a lot. He spent a ton of time in Kellogg, he spent a lot of time out there raking in Harriet island, and I'm not sure how much time he spent at Como. Anyway, I guess my point is despite all the talk, he does back it up with quite a bit of action as well. Now if he could only figure out the clues, he might be dangerous. hehe Not that anyone was really able to figure them out this year.

I agree. I need to hook up with him like in past hunts. We could clear huge areas.

Now if he could only figure out the clues, he might be dangerous.

That's why I loved seeing you two together at HI. It's the perfect team. B&B

Well that's quite the dilemma there. I don't really like Jake. He's a lot of things I don't really care for that I won't go into here. But at the same time I admire certain things about him. On the one hand, I dread the day he actually finds the medallion as there will be no living with him after that. On the other hand, he seems like a good person to have as a partner because he will do the work. Sometimes I feel like I'm being a nice guy to someone who needs a friend. Sometimes I feel like I'm selling my soul to the devil. Maybe I'm really doing both.

I dread the day he actually finds the medallion as there will be no living with him after that

For some reason I always thought you lived in CG AW. My mistake. I know that you used to take the bus by Phalen but that was with your old job. I had it in my head that you always went up 61 though. I used to live in CG and I always hoped that it would be in that part of the park some day. I liked your Dr. No noodle Terry when you first posted it. In fact that's what made me go back and figure out the last two lines of clue 2. Thanks

I used to live in the Como Park area and I would take the bus down Larpenteur to Phalen, down to East 7th, and then back into downtown. The area you're thinking of though is a place Tim the Hunter and I were going to use for a treasure hunt we were going to do together a few years ago, but I couldn't think of any good clues back then (I was also somewhat distracted at the time).

I mentioned that TV's Dr. No clue confirmed what I was thinking for clue 2. He didn't remember seeing what was meant by Dr. No. AW mentioned that it was probably posted in the 'secret' thread. I said that I thought it was listed in the Jake OK thread and not the Non-Jake thread. He surprised but understood nonetheless. He's not to shy to mention that he lurks then digs. That's obvious. I can't see him figuring out too many clues if it wasn't for the posts in the PPWC.
Way to go ATH!

Cool. Actually it was Reg's ideas on the Governors clue. I had told him to go ahead and post it in the invitational, but he didn't want to because Jake has access. I asked him if I could post it in a thread Jake doesn't have access to (because I wanted all you to know) and he was ok with that. So reg knows about this thread too, but is ok with it. He made a joke about not being at "level 3" yet.

Tue, 03/18/2003 - 2:43 AM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I thought they took away Jake's access to the Invitational Thread? That's the one I told him about since he did have access to it at one time anyway. I told him he got booted out after something he did (was it when he did the thing about the hunt being cancelled?) And that it got posted in the non-lurker thread.

Tue, 03/18/2003 - 5:52 AM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

And I have to say I really was hoping someone else would find it. But Jake would call me up yesterday, and I knew he was roughly in the right area, and I would ask him who else was around there and he'd say "no one really". I know Me2 and TMK were around too but they sounded like they were all over the place and Jake was stubbornly clinging to the Middle School area. So if someone else was going to find it, where were they? I couldn't just go to someone else and say "Pssst, hey, look at the big log over by the bridge".

My honest opinion is that if it hadn't been Jake, it would have been some other person that we don't know very well who just got there at the last minute after Clue 10 and happened to zoom in on the right spot. There was nothing in the next two clues to guide people to that spot anymore than they had already been and it seemed the rest of the CC had given up on that particular area by the school.

Tue, 03/18/2003 - 6:03 AM Permalink
King Boreas aka Ian

Is that log hollow? Is there room for a geocache, coffee can-ice cream pail size? Is the area secluded, at least partially?

Tue, 03/18/2003 - 7:50 AM Permalink
Artemis The Huntress

alot

Tue, 03/18/2003 - 7:50 AM Permalink
Artemis The Huntress

Ian, I'm not sure about how much room inside the log, but I think its a great area for a geo-cache! Its pretty secluded at night but there maybe(?) some traffic from the middle school during the day.

Tue, 03/18/2003 - 7:52 AM Permalink
ThoseMedallingKids

I didn't really look that much because I just didn't feel it there. I was in the wrong mindset. I thought that AW's clues would lead to a specific spot. Not a area, but a specific thought. I wasn't seeing it, so that's why I wasn't really looking.

Ian, there are a lot more places that are secluded. One problem though might be the deer there. I think you may have seen the picture I took of a deer while out there. They seem to prefer the land to the south of the creek. They do have some secluded areas. I don't know if you want to leave them undisturbed or not. There's also a fair amount of deer scat around, which could factor in your choice. Still, I suggest looking around the area. For a seemingly small strip of land, there's a lot of spots to have geocaches.

Battle Creek has 4 already, but none near that area. If it's considered part of the park, then that park is probably maxxed out.

It was obvious now that MK hid his coin in a park that was already used in 2003 because he insisted that it was still there since January 7 before all the 2003 hunts even took place. So it had to be at Como (no way), Harriet Island, Mounds or Battle Creek. Good job MK!
