Someone who knows nothing about Lord of the Rings wouldn't have understood the reference to "me precious".

Those who know a LOT about Lord of the Rings would never have understood it, cuz Gollum doesn't say "ME precious"...he says "MY precious".

I sent the nicest e-mail I could to the PP about it, cuz its sacrilege to defile classic literature. The clue writer did much research, but apparently skipped researching a few of the important things.

And I could see it if the "precious" was the rings of fire...that would fit with LOTR, but sandstone walls??????????? Hmmmmmm.

But, having said that, it was a great hunt, even though it had to be an armchair hunt for me this year.

Chemist..how did you get in this invite-only thread? Questions like that are slanderous. Everyone knows that I always hide it before the hunt begins.

I'm just curious about the hunt. Since the medallion was hidden in ice what would've happened had we had the 50deg weather. Wouldn't it have made some of the clues invalid? I have watched the hunt from the sidelines for over 4 yrs now. I know many of the people here.

How did I get in this thread? The same way you did. By an invite.

yeah, mikey. blame scribe for the name change of the thread.

Me too. I told Bud at the end that I felt like I was in the Blair Which Hunt with all that screaming in the woods.

Ares, was it at Scribe's suggestion to mispell Winter (Witner) in the thread name? She will be the official proof reader of any future editions of the THG.

11 clues of absolute fluff...

I think that phrase is going to haunt me now all year.

Two clue hunt. But still, very clever.

I think it had to be done this way this year. The cluewriter will lighten up next year if we get snow. Perhaps we may be able to get there by the 9th clue. I want to put my vote in for my indestructable favorite...Hidden Falls.

He was just kidding with you. The questions cut kind of deep into treasure hunting lore regarding spotters and whether they really hide it before the hunt.

The chunck of ice from what I understand was pretty large, so it could have withstood some melting. As for spotters, no one is really sure if they use them or not. But since people often hunt in groups, it's not unusual that one person would find it and then go get their partner(s) and turn it in together. And they wouldn't really be able to tell if they were lifelong hunting partners or someone they just met.

Wow...I like that! I haven't spoken to her since the Newell hunt. She has a good memory. She kept planning to come up from St. Louis each year, but the treasure kept getting found before she got on the plane.

Cool! I better call my mom.

She was at the PP the other night after interviewing Camo Terry - there was a photographer taking lots of pictures. I wonder if the paper edition includes them?

It is a really nice article - I am now forwarding it to my family so they will forgive me for not calling them for two weeks.

The only reason I asked if it was hidden during the hunt was because of the fact that it took so long and it seemed from what I read is that most areas had been searched. I didn't mean any disrespect by the question, just thought that it may happen to lengthen the hunt.

I sure hope so!!!

I sent an e-mail to the Marquette Mining Journal to suggest that they do one here in conjuction with the local winter festival, which is a fairly big deal for a small town, mostly cuz it includes the UP200 dogsled races, to which it seems the whole town turns out.

Maybe they'll let *me* write the clues.

What a great story!Thanks eags!!!
Terry, if you read this, I can bring a plethora of "plasticware" to the re-hash.Let me know if it is needed. (hah! I got to use the word plethora) I'm thinking that in reality I'll do up barbecue meatball thingies,IF there's power. I think my hubby is ready to be inducted into the CC. Let us give him the name "Psycho Hunter" Well, I'm off to clean the homestead...that is if I can rember where my vaccum is, and how to use it-hehe MCL

'Course I sometimes can't find my car keys, so I probably *could* hide my own medallion, and still have it be a challenge to find it.

I just got an email from the LA Times person saying the article was ready -

Here is what I responded:

Thanks so much for writing such a lovely article. You captured our dedication, passion, and love for the Winter Carnival and The Treasure Hunt.

We are passing the word around to make sure everyone in St. Paul reads it!

I thought I saw something about taking a picture when it was found. What is that for?

They take a picture when you go to the Pioneer Press, but not at the park. I don't know if they really know when someone finds it. The guy who found it in Newell went home for a couple of hours and waited for his wife to come back before turning it in.

Does it actually have to be turned into the PP to be truly claimed?

Yes it does have to be turned into the Pioneer Press to verify that you really found it and because they use the same medallion each year.

I know this probably has been answered but has the medallion ever 'disappeared' never to be found?

No, it's always been found and always turned in. But that could happen.

The only reason I asked if it was hidden during the hunt was because of the fact that it took so long and it seemed from what I read is that most areas had been searched.

There's searched and there's searched. If the thing is pretty well disguised it can take a while as someone may come across it and not realize it and then others consider that area "already picked over". In my mock hunt last year many people searched the small area of brush that I hid my treasure in for 3 days before someone actually found it, and I know for a fact it was there the whole time. In this hunt, people were only in the right park for about 24 hours. I heard from the guy making the movie though, after he interviewed past clue writers, that there were sometimes when they forgot to hide the medallion before the hunt.

It's going to be a rumble!

Officially, I know that the policy of the St. Paul Parks Dept. is that in the picnic off season (before May 1st) they don't take reservations and facilities are all first come first serve. I wonder where they are planning on having theirs?

I'm still a little confused as to what's going on over there.

Lilman is a guy I met at the PP that is from the other boards, he's over there trying to get people in yet I had invited him from here.

What he doesn't realize is, the group over there wants nothing to do with us for some reason.
