Flash Intro-"Geocaching"
6 minute Movie-"Searching for a cache"
Basic Info
- Buy or borrow a Global Positioning System receiver. A basic unit is the Garmin eTrex GPS or Magellan GPS 315. Both cost about $100 and can be found at stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy or online at http://www.amazon.com
- Find a cache near you at <http://www.geocaching.com> Enter a ZIP code and the site will list nearby caches. Select a cache, such as "Geocache by Ray" or "Arboretum One" and click on its "details" button. Write down the cache's coordinates and print out the description. Use the online mapping site link at the bottom of the page to get driving directions to the location.
- While still at home, enter into your GPS receiver the coordinates of the cache as they are listed on the Web site. Coordinates -- such as N 39 degrees 24.661; W degrees 094 14.86 -- describe the latitude and longitude of the site.
- Follow the driving directions until you can drive no closer to the cache and park your car. Follow the arrow on your GPS receiver as it leads you to the cache. Be aware that heavy tree cover can block the GPS signal. Once you leave your car, it could take anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to find the cache.
- The GPS signal will fluctuate once you are within 100 feet of the cache, so from that point on, you're on your own. Check around stumps and under rock and leaf piles. Remember that almost all caches are placed above ground, so no digging!
- Congratulations! You've found the cache. Take an item, leave an item and record your experience in the logbook. Reseal the cache and put it back exactly the way you found it.
When you get home, e-mail the person who hid the cache and let him know you found it. Also, post a description of your experience on the cache's online page at <http://www.geocaching.com>

Centrisbug: did you see you are #2 in the WORLD
Centrisbug: how cool is that
King Boreas: yeah, hard to believe
King Boreas: i got updated numbers
Centrisbug: I think the cooper thing is a group
Centrisbug: so you are probably #1 solo placer
King Boreas: cccooper 188
Centrisbug: is it a group?
King Boreas: georgeandmary 141
King Boreas: I don't know
King Boreas: ron streeter 123
Centrisbug: I think it is -- i think you are the only solo one in the top
King Boreas: just a short walk 118
Centrisbug: where are you finding these?
King Boreas: so is that good, or sad ?:-D
Centrisbug: the solo -- it is good -- it makes you #1
King Boreas: just a sec
Centrisbug: Well it is still really really good
King Boreas: I can't get the site to load-it's at insidecorner.com Have you seen it?
Centrisbug: nope -- not seen it
King Boreas: You have to hack around on it and do searches of names
Centrisbug: i'll try
King Boreas: http://www.insidecorner.com/geocaching/stats/states.cgi?country=United%20States&state=Minnesota
Centrisbug: they also have one for the metro only
King Boreas: I know, then I tried checking each name, but archives don't show up
Centrisbug: bummer
Centrisbug: so when are you putting out #150?
King Boreas: anyway, top 10 is cool enough for me
Centrisbug: indeed -- notice i am the ONLY girl on this list in the top 12 or so
King Boreas: cccooper found 1687 caches
Centrisbug: they have to be a group -- that is rediculous
Centrisbug: you would have to geocache every day for hours and hours
King Boreas: http://www.insidecorner.com/geocaching/stats/users.cgi?username=CCCooperAgency
King Boreas: I can't tell anything by the profile-so I'll claim the #1 solo title
Centrisbug: I think it is true -- you are
way cooler there, ian.
If this is the case, I should be able to find one of Ian's caches in my own backyard within the month. And that's including the 2 weeks he'll miss due to the hunt. GJ Ian!
including the 2 weeks he'll miss due to the hunt.
Won't happen ... if I'm out in a park, looking for treasure, you can bet I won't leave until I deposit a little 'treasure' of my own.
Don't forget the charmin?
Welcome Centris:
Now start poking around. There's lots of stuff here.
BTW, Centris likes bugs (hahahaha)
Narrator:"Our curtain opens as Scribe, having just finished her morning bath, is searching for her hairbrush. Having no success, Scribe cries out
.."
Scribe:"Oh, where is my hairbrush? Oh where is my hairbrush? Oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where, oh, where oh, where ... is my hairbrush?"
Narrator:"Having heard her cry, Pa Grape enters the scene. Shocked and slightly embarrassed at the sight of Scribe in a towel, Pa regains his composure and reports ..."
Pa:"I think I saw a hairbrush back there!"
Scribe:"Back there is my hairbrush. Back there is my hairbrush. Back there, back there, oh, where, back there, oh, where, oh, where, back there, back there, back there ... is my hairbrush?"
Narrator:"Having heard her joyous proclamation, Junior Asparagus enters the scene. Shocked and slightly embarrassed at the sight of Scribe in a towel, Junior regains his composure and comments ..."
Junior:"Why do you need a hairbrush? You don't have any hair!"
Narrator:"Scribe is taken aback. The thought had never occured to her. No hair? What would this mean? What will become of her? What will become of her hairbrush? Scribe wonders ..."
Scribe:"No hair for my hairbrush. No hair for my hairbrush. No hair, no hair, no where, no hair, no hair, no hair, no where back there, no hair .. for my hairbrush."
Narrator:"Having heard her wonderings, Bob the Tomato enters the scene. Shocked and slightly embarrassed at the sight of Scribe in a towel, Bob regains his composure and confesses ..."
Bob:"Scribe, that old hairbrush of yours ... Well, you never use it, you don't really need it. So, well, I'm sorry ... I didn't know. But I gave it to the Peach - 'cause he's got hair!"
Narrator:"Feeling a deep sense of loss, Scribe stumbles back and laments .."
Scribe:"Not fair! Oh, my hairbrush. Not fair! My poor hairbrush. Not fair, not fair, no hair, not fair, no where, no hair, not fair, not fair, not fair! My little hairbrush!"
Narrator:"Having heard her lament, the Peach enters the scene. Himself in a towel, both Scribe and the Peach are shocked and slightly embarrassed at the sight of each other. But recognizing Scribe's generosity, the Peach is thankful ..."
Peach:"Thanks for the hairbrush."
Narrator:"Yes, good has been done here. The Peach exits the scene. Scribe smiles, but, still feeling an emotional attachment for the hairbrush, calls out ..."
Scribe:"Take care of my hairbrush. Take care, oh my hairbrush. Take care, take care, don't dare not care. Take care. Nice hair. No fair. Take care, take care ... of my hairbrush."
Narrator:"The end!"
WRONG !
Scribe is stilllooking for her hairbrush !
Container: 8"x8" round tin
Contents: Trinkets and Treasures
ACTIVE !: this cache is in Ramsey County !
woo hoo! scribe is a cache!
Ian 1/11/03 7:58pm
LOL! Scribe's gonna love that!
Really? That means someone MUST know where my hairbrush is! That bitch the peach passed it on and won't tell me who he gave it to....I hate that guy. Some folks got no respect I tell ya! All you geocachers out there: PLEASE find my hairbrush! It's a lie, I DO HAVE HAIR....just cuz it's on my back doesn't mean it can't be brushed.....
just cuz it's on my back
::shudder::
At least I have hair, butthead.
What are you saying?
Surround sound don't mean you have hair.
Just cuz it's a comb over doesn't mean it's not hair.
SCRIBE:
That hairbrush hasn't been released yet, but very soon it will be traveling around Ramsey County.
Yep, it'll be out there.
Members-only caches will not be allowed in Ramsey County Parks
Previously, I only used the members only feature because the cache contained a new Travel Bug, or because the cache contained bettertrinkets. Now that I found out about the proposed ban, everyone of my caches in a Ramsey County park is members-only.
until the magic date of April 1, when registration starts.
oh wow- so are you acting illegally until April 1st?
They could put a warrant out for your arrest?
What I'm doing is legal now, but won't be in the future. Some call me a troublemaker.
It's me that calls you a troublemaker -- it's because YOU ARE! (grin)
And what trecherous thing happened to "bolt" bug? It is all in pieces.
You'd have to ask the Sheriff.
Most of my caches have been removed from Ramsey County Parks, and all have been removed from Three Rivers Parks. I'm thinking that Cheech & Chong wouldn't voluntarily give up their stash ....
So you won't be able to have caches in ramsey county? Or is there parts of this convo I'm missin?
Yeah, you're missing a big part. Ramsey is actually the first county to support geocaching. I can go into detail on Sunday or send you an e-mail.
Either way, I do plan on stopping in on sunday so that'd be fine, I was thinking I'd like to start geocaching a bit, figure it'd be a good way to get to know the parks for the hunt. Well, at least it'll get me out in the parks :) Trouble right now is I don't have a gps...
You can use mine on Sunday. There will be 5 caches there. Register at www.geocaching.com and you will be able to log your 'finds'.
KC0GRN -- Make sure he loans you his YELLOW gps and doesn't try to give you the black one -- trust me on this.
Ian, how much would a GPS cost me if I wanted to get one?
if Centris gets ahold of my black one, she'd GIVE it to you. Otherwise about $100.00
My boss got a good deal at Best Buy on a Open Box unit.
cool, maybe I will check into one, not sure though cuz my summer's are usually taken up from camping.
DOH! All I need to know! Ian are there any red Gps units available?:)

Two travel bugs, Juan Montoya and Jimmy Vasser are racing to Indy (Indianapolis Motor Speedway). They are 'beanie' bears for the Target/Chip Ganassi Racing team. The race started on Sunday, 2/2/03 at the Re-Hash Bash.
I'm in.:)
Should have guessed it would be you Ian
Heh
I'm in.:)
meaning you're registered ??
on sale this week
They're on sale this week?
I can't afford one this week! I just bought a digitial camera the other day.
they go on sale a lot.
We got Paul's Magellan real cheap at a pawn shop -- it is not the best, but it is OK for geocaching.
My mom got her yellow etrex at a consignment shop for about half of normal price (with all its papers and cords too)
Call around and see what's out there........ lots of people trade up to newer models and have their used GPS for sale.
