2003 Redbear Mock Hunt

Submitted by THX 1138 on

Prize: 1 flashlight
Hunt duration: until the snow melts

Clue: only 1 clue!

11 at 10, it started the race
'tween Bear and Marley to the flag place
but along the way,
I'm sad to say,
I dropped my lucky light somewhere in white space.

If you begin at the main entrance, seeing the flag pole,
look for large bear tracks that make big holes.
follow them down, straight as you please,
and look 'till you're en-lightened with great ease.

I was even going to park within feet of it !!

So my parking streak I think is still on!

I figured out the No Doubt clue. On "Tragic Kingdom" there is a song called "Sunday Morning". It was found on Sunday morning, so there you go!

No. I just found it funny the coincidence.

Well I'm back from the weekend up north and I guess I missed the end of this hunt. Oh well, I've been rather busy working on the Mock Hunt (kind of cool how the title I made up has become part of the hunter lexicon now, hehe). I have to say I was a bit lost on this hunt since the clues were written in a very different style from the one my brain is stuck in while writing mine, so congratulations to Regman (and Marley too really) for figuring them out. Now it will be your turn to try and shift gears in about a week. Mwah ha ha ha.

Clue #1
to begin with. Marley was dead: that clever rapscallion
it was he, not the bear, who found kilty's medallion
Spriung is sprunging, wedding bells will be ringing
and March Madness is soon near.

But don't despair - here's some help from the Bear:
if you read this, you've gone too far.

Explanation: the key here is the first phrase, which really isn’t a death threat toward Marley King, but the first sentence of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” (it really reads: Marley was dead: to begin with.) (So Artemis, don’t worry!) The giveaway is the goofy punctuation. There is only one Charles Street in St. Paul, and there’s only one park that’s near it – so if you get the literary illusion you’ve got the park in the first clue. March Madness is a very vague clue that could refer to University Ave., right by the park, but it was unintentional. Wedding bells is the first of many religious references – because St. Cecilia’s church (what a pretty church, by the way) is right on the park. Finally – “Spriung” is a typo – it should be Spring. But once I posted it I didn’t want to change it.

a year has passed since I wrote my note
but I should have known it right from the start
recent No Doubt,
Gives Serious clout,
but for the Hunt, think Old School

. The first two lines are from the Police Song “message in a bottle.” “recent No Doubt” refers to Sting singing with No Doubt at the Super Bowl – and he sang Message in a bottle. I meant this as a way to get people away from Como park, but that backfired once someone realized the halftime rec bar was right near como. “Old School” is meant to throw a wrench into thinking because it’s the name of the movie that Hollywood is in – but you’ve got to go “Old School” in Sting’s career to when he was with the Police.

Clue #3

The meaning of life, now that’s a search
It’s the small details that’ll give you a lurch
Cold beer, MNF, the look in her eye,
That thirty years later still makes you cry.
It’s the latter for which this bear is hunting,
Because sometimes love means nothing.

Two indicators here – “love means nothing” refers to tennis courts; so does “30” (love-15-30-40) “MNF” refers to the KSTP tower that you can see from the park.
Clue #4

Hosanna! rat giantism

If you're lost, confused, check out this story
take a trip down the walking path, you'll be in hunt territory
start north and not west, and you'll find the way
but if you go far you've been led astray

The first part of this clue is a joke – meant to throw off the anagrammers. If you anagram the first line, you’ll get the phrase “This is not an anagram!”

This clue was awfully risky to give out the park’s cross streets so early – the park is at the corner of Hunt Dr. and Territorial Ave, which is also the starting point – if you go down the walking path, you’ll get to the tree that the puck is hidden in quite early – but not if you go too far.

clue #5

Beyond the rainbow's end
Nothing is what it seems
Solicitous? May cost you a friend.
Forever follow those dreams...
Tomorrow is a brand new day; today repent and pray.

This was a fun hunt, because like during the big hunt, people would feed information to Hollywood and I’d be the secret person behind the scene – the tables were turned here for her, and she was able to be the secret clue elf. This clue reads like the “Hedda Gabler” clue in the big hunt – the key is the phrase “Be not solicitous for tomorrow” – the first words going down - muttered by St. Anthony, who thought the phrase from the bible spoke to him.

Clue #6

We’ve reached the half-time
Of our little game
The clues will get harder
Time to be fanning the flame

So keep searching, but to this remain true:
Cross the road, you’ll see sweet smelling ‘pew
To your left, get a bearing
In this neighborhood, two colors you should be wearing

There’s three good indicators here. The “sweet smelling ‘pew” is a perfume reference – if you look across highway 280 you’ll see KTSP – chanel no. 5. While you’re looking at the KSTP tower, looking to your left – you’ll see Gopher Bearing co. also – two colors – refers to University Ave. – the colors? maroon and gold, of course – which will go great in the Gopher Bearing store.

Clue #7

Jesus in Jello, God shows his face
In mysterious ways to the whole human race
Turn southward, he’ll show you a sign
To find the puck, check the Y line

Continuing on the religious theme, the key here is turning to the south and seeing a sign. If you’re at the place where the puck is hidden, looking south, you’ll see the “Budget Sign co.” Also – a sneaky hint to the puck location – you have to look up in the tree (the Y axis - vertical) to find it.

Clue #8
Clue #8 - Sorry it's early

My great Aunt Honey's jam
was the best in the South.
And the Food, Glorious Food
nearly melted in your mouth.

The key here is if you say “Aunt Honey” really fast (or remove the u in Aunt – Ant in Minnesota lingo) you get Anthoney – technically the park name. The “food glorious food” reference was supposed to get you to Cromwell avenue since it’s a song from the musical “Oliver”– but it backfired and also referred to Charles street.

Clue #9

The hunters are closing; the clues are too easy
I'm wringing my hands and re-writing till queasy
Everybody loves Him, I wish they would say
then I'd be allright, at least for today

“Everybody loves Him” – Raymond ave. The rest, as they say, is history.

I've tried to discourage the pp from running a hunt concurrent with AW's, but apparently the prize (unknown) has a time limit on it of some kind.

Personally, I'm taking the week off and prepping for the 8th.

Great clues Red!

I should have had it on clue 3, and again on clue 6 if I'd followed through on my thoughts and searched for the answers instead of letting my self be distracted! I kept asking/telling Marley "Isn't there a park where you can see ABC's tower? I know there is!" But the THG was up N, and I never followed thru. I also planned on doing a search for a bearing company, but never did, and again the THG would have told me all I needed to know! But I didn't put it all together until after 9.

Good job Kids on figuring it out early!

WAY TO GO Regman for finding it! It was in your destiny!

Destiny? hahaha, Thinking of "Back to the Future" ;)

Clue 5 was the BEST clue-

I am glad someone found it - as I woke up thismorning and saw the SNOW I wondered about this hunt. I was also gonna go out to SSA yesterday morning after bringing my husband to work at 8 am-but I was toasty warm tired in bed and told him to just take the truck-so I never went out- The clues fit the park perfectly - as I said the other day---one other and I figured it out by clue 8 - It was KIDS :)
but we just didn't go out to SSA-so our loss - Congratulations REGMAN!

Clue 4 was the easiest once I saw what park it was in my THG!
oh, and rat giantism is another backfire...GOPHER (Gopher Bearing and UofM area) -he's a big RAT ;)
