Bill- actually Jethro was trying to prove that oil was "flowing" out of Iraq. That article did absolutely nothing to prove his point, and I found it somewhat humorous that I could post the same article to actually prove a point. The oil is flowing, maybe not as much as could flow but if the UN wanted more to flow more would flow. My point was made.
Rick, I wasn't necessarily talking about America. The world is dependent on oil, for now at least, and it doesn't hurt just our country when its flow is disrupted.
Well, I'm not running from it, but some claim that it's ONLY about oil, and it isn't. Of course that's part of it. But it's really about finishing up what got started twelve years ago when Iraq invaded its neighbor, figuring that the world wouldn't do anything. It's about stability in the Middle East. And it's about what's right.
Lots of problems. There's something of a mananaattitude among institutions, like, Portuguese Customs. They don't want to make it easy for a guy who has work to do in a short amount of time.
I saw a country that was maybe 15 to 20 years behind. I somewhat expected that. The cities are a little crumbly.
It would be a nice place to vacation, if you were flexible. You could see a lot of the country in a couple weeks, since it's small.
Portugal is one of the really rural countries in EU, and in the north(dont know about the south) where I often was, they still have ox for work :-) something that hasnt been seen where I live for about 50+ years....

There is this devious movement to drive a schism between successful immigrants and minorities in the US. The animosity between Koreans in the US and the black people is an example. The comparison of the pathetic situation of blacks in the US and the success of recent immigrants like Koreans and Indians is manipulated to sow the seeds of division. Indians are the most prosperous of any immigrant group today in the US. The desire therefore is there to use race as a wedge to create dissension to undermine Indians.
L2F is indulging in this subtle tactic by frequently associating racism with my opinions. Unable to use the powers of debate he descends to race baiting as a tool and resurrects the canard of racial epithets to undermine my immigrant Indian status.
I read your post in Arlanda in Sweden and fumed for a week. Back home now, I can get it out of my system.

We Americans have also become marked people. As advocates of violence over peace, we are deemed fair game as object of violence.
There was this Palestinian immigrant to Sweden who runs a pizza place in the town I was working in. These are the only places that stay open late and cater to the drunk Swedes and itinerant engineers who pull 20 hours days like me. One night we discussed the impending war. I told this guy that the US would decimate Iraq in no time.
He conceded that Iraq was toast. However, the destruction of Iraq would essentially negate the evil of 911. The guilt of the barbarity of the 911 laid at the door of Muslims would be equaled by the destruction of Iraq.
The slate would be clean and the retaliation against the Americans justifiable.
"We Americans have also become marked people. As advocates of violence over peace, we are deemed fair game as object of violence."
That's nothing recent. And it would be pretty hard to argue AGAINST the point that the United States is advocating violence over peace. I mean, look what's happening here. There's 200,000 troops in the Middle East.
But you have to marvel at the level of stupidity or the blind adherence to national sovereignty or religious dogma that the enemies like Al Qaeda or Hamas, or whatever group you think of would sink to place themselves in such a position.
Those groups certainly think that violence against Americans is justified. I really don't care that they do. I care that they are stopped. But how smart is it?
Part of their reasoning must be that the US has been stuck in quagmires like Vietnam in the past. If they do, they neglect to think the US may have learned some lessons.
But what has 800 or so years of historical conflict and self-flagellation taught those people who would foolishly seek to topple a nation that posseses the power to destroy the world dozens of times over?
Seems to me, the smart Iraqis are already making surrender flags.
Those groups certainly think that violence against Americans is justified. I really don't care that they do. I care that they are stopped
America has exemplified the success of brazen violence to the thugs, maniacs and zealots of the world.
Look at the NRA – it advocates violence, issuance of guns to one and all, training in firearms for American kids commencing from the kindergarten level and glorifies guns as the answer to all law and order problems. This vicious NRA promised its members that it would put its man in the White House to advocate and propagate its mantra of a gun in every US citizen’s hands. And they delivered – little boy bush – the hand picked NRA baboon is in the White House and advocates the same kind of gun violence globally. America and its NRA government set an example to the world that violence is an efficacious option.
The death penalty excessive use and American advocacy of use of the death penalty for child transgressions is a second example. If and infant in the US pushes another infant out of a crib and this baby dies, the infant who did the pushing will have to be put to death according to the advocates of the death penalty. In the exercise of the Judeo-Christian aberration exhorting an eye for an eye and by making this applicable to children, the US once again promotes violent retribution for any perceived transgression.
The US sets the example for use of violence and when the Islamic zealots pattern their action on the US, we get outraged. The example has to come from within.
"The US sets the example for use of violence and when the Islamic zealots pattern their action on the US, we get outraged. The example has to come from within."
Which is the older culture? If what you say about the US is true (which I won't concede) maybe we learned it from them.
I don't think your average Islamist zealot follows the NRA much. But that's quite piece of off the cuff anthropology you undertook.
And the NRA is no organization that I admire, either.
Rick - ever since the Ottomon empire crashed and the Mughal empire was soundly thrashed, the Muslim world has been in decline. It is after OBL and his ilk witnessed the success of US sanctioned violence - especially in Afghanistan against the USSR and that of Israel in Palestine - that they decided to mimic and use brazen violence also.
I hope there isn't an Islamist zealot, or suicide bomber who you feel is justified in their actions either.
There is a war raging in Palestine with no demarcation of civilians and military. The WTC attacks were a blatant attack on an innocent populace. In Palestine though all of capable Israeli citizenry is considered active and used in the war against Palestinians - with civilians being targeted using missiles and tanks. The suicide bombers used in retaliation against the state of Israel is therefore a valid and legitmate weapon.

BAGHDAD - Ongoing excavations have uncovered important quantities of anthrax and VX nerve agent, Iraqi presidential adviser Amer al-Saadi said yesterday.
United Nations inspectors have been seeking clarification of the whereabouts of such deadly agents for years.
Mr Saadi said excavations at the al-Aziziya air base, 104 km south-west of Baghdad, had uncovered nearly all bomb fragments filled with tonnes of toxic agents which Iraq insists it destroyed unilaterally in 1991.
I thought they didnt have WMD? I thought they accounted for everything in their decleration to the U.N.? This is nothing more then a delay tactic. To me this shows EVEN further breach of U.N. resolutions.
Mr. Hanson seems to find everyone crazy but the Americans. Impossible for him to consider that any criticism of US action against Iraq could ever, in any way be legitimate. What should we expect from National Review?

Rick 3/4/03 6:19am- it is not only the travel industry that decimates the ability of honest Americans to eke a living.
Industrial growth in the US is stagnant and dormant with this nation receding into a service based economy. Growth is in areas of the Middle East, China and India. Most of my major projects there are on hold.
Even economic planning is iffy. If we move into Iraq soon, the process control infrastructure rebuilding in that country could bring my division upwards of a $100 million. I salivate on that kind of money – slave to Mammon that I have become.
I wish we could wipe out all these Iraqi women and children by end of this summer. Fortunes are at stake here folks.
You're condescending, arrogant, racist, and just plain mean.
I don't know what happened in your life to scar you so badly, but I wish you'd get over it. Because once in awhile, I see a person in you that I genuinly like.
I saved this from the net and do not have a link. I have annotaed it
Number of definitions of "racist"? Well, let's see how many we can think of.
- Believing that races differ from each other.
- Believing that races differ from each other in important ways, like intelligence or physical abilities.
- Believing that a particular group of people who are racially different are also different in their culture.
I adhere to the above and perhaps the label is then appropriate
The ones below, I violently dispute and clashes with my value system
- Believing that races differ from each other in important ways, like intelligence or physical abilities, for genetic reasons rather than because of cultural or environmental circumstances.
- Believing that because of such differences, members of different races should have different political rights.
- Believing that a particular group of people who are racially different are also different in their culture, for genetic rather than historically contingent reasons.
- Not liking the different culture associated with a different race and wanting that culture changed, opposed, corrected, or confronted.
- Because of believing that a member of a different race is likely to be different in a particular way, believing that this particular member of the different race is himself likely to be different in this particular way.
- Believing that this particular member of a different race is different in this way, even when you have got to know him individually and know that it isn't so.
- Believing that all the members of a particular race should be murdered.
Apply the above to yourselves. The perjorative of racism is bandied about in these circles with far too much ease.
The ones below, I violently dispute and clashes with my value system
A couple were........

Because of believing that a member of a different race is likely to be different in a particular way, believing that this particular member of the different race is himself likely to be different in this particular way.
Fine and good. Then look at some of the quotes you made. I posted the number for context as well. You've made some ugly and horrid remarks. I can only go by what you yourself write. You use terms that you know are offensive to some but have no problem doing it.

Dissenting opinion in public is equated to being non-patriotic by the usual gang of ignorant Caucasian, gun-toting NRA diseased pricks.
The American today is the nigger of the world, the untouchable low caste pariah of the universe and a more annihilating force than the AIDS virus .
The Jews have finally been displaced as the scum of humanity,
What is the use of that infrastructure if your Chink friends and Jehadi friends grab it?..
The vast majority of Americans are Caucasian mediocre minds who have an attention span that befits only reality shows. It has always been a small cabal of opinion makers that have spoken for the American people. The Jewish mafia has been vocal. The NRA has been oppressively loud. The most prosperous years in American history have been when centrists have had their say – extremist white boys tempered with benign motives like the Clinton years.
And lets not forget using the term Gooks and dispariging anyone who believes in Jesus as being foolish, and the slanty eye comments. I mean you might as well denigrate someone's religion too as long as you're doing it. Oh yea, you did.
Naah Naradar, I can't see why anyone would think you are racist or have racist tendencies. Go ahead, explain and justify away. Whine like the little victim. Boo Hoo little boy Naradar. Tell me how opressed you are. You're the one who made sure to let everyone know your racial makeup. Nobody would have probably asked, yet you made it an issue from day one. Fine I have no problem with that, but it's a little hard for me to have sympathy when I see you use the N or G words etc. I frankly like having you here. I disagree with you alot obviously but I like to know other viewpoints such as yours, just not the ones with the racist b.s attached to it as you're prone to do. A minute later you're rational and pleasurable to debate with. Perhaps it's a chemical imbalance but whatever it is get help, fix it or take a hike if you can't can the racsit remarks. Get it yet ? You will.
I will continue to be my unbridled self – put up with it or exercise your peremptory despotism.
Then you can cry like the freak you are, look I'm being opressed. I was never given fair warning because of my ethnicity, see, I told ya, they are racist !
The relevance of term Ugly American becomes so transparent when confronted by attitudes like yours.
Oh, I'm sorry I thought you were an American. You're the American using words like that so what does that make you ?
I manipulate the stereotype of racism to make my point. One can comprehend the derision and the vitriol with which black and brown people are held only by use of the n word ( since the expression of the word seems to offend you).
It does, I hate racial slurs I understand using them at times when discussing racism etc. Perhaps, But then you need to preface it more.
I heard that word and camel-jock hurled at me more than a dozen times a couple of weeks ago when I was protesting the Iraq war. The animosity and the passion of the hatred that is hurled on us can be best conveyed by use of such word in my writing.
And I think it sucks that people used those insults towards you. Perhaps they would say they were doing it as well "manipulate the stereotype of racism" as you put it. Now I am sure they weren't but when you see those words used it's offensive, that's what puzzles me. I am sure you've had plenty of experiences with those derisionary terms and know how it effects some, so why use them unless you have to?
As far as using the term gooks, I realize that in Korea it is more commonly used. The first time I heard it over there I was taken aback by it becasue of it's meaning at home. And that was my point to you. If we were debating with mostly S.Korean's perhaps but we aren't and the term can and is considered very derrogatory by many including me.
Point is debate away, say what you like, just stop using those terms and it's a non-isssue. There's too many people and the posters to try to determine or guess intent so the best policy is to not have any of it. O.K ?
Travis describes himself as a pacifist. In high school, he was kidded about being not aggressive enough for sports. During basic training, he refused to chant "kill" with the other soldiers. More recently, he marched in anti-war protests and spoke openly about his objections.
Ok, he's a pacifist, and he joined the Army?
File under "Too stupid to live" and send him to the front line.
"In joining the military, the two men followed the example set by their father, Jeff, and oldest brother, Preston. They enlisted in peacetime to earn money for college, gain discipline and see the world."
I bet family pressure and aggressive marketing by the military often results in the wrong people signing up.
It's often sold a something of a college prep program. Of course, it isn't.
I detect a bit of an editorializing tone in the phrase "followed the example set by their father." But, hey, it's Fox.
What kind of an arguement is: I didn't think we would go to war. No recruiter told me about war.
HELLO Dip $hit! Wake Up where did you go to school? You grew up during the Gulf War. Military personnel go to war before non-military citizens.
I think it's funny. It's okay to go to the military to get money but when war comes, run and hide. Say you don't want to.
I think I should try that. Yes I would like to be paid for work but when you want me to do work I will refuse. It's against my morals. I didn't think I would actually have to do work. No one ever told me I would really have to do work. I thought all I had to do was sit here and play work.

"The world is dependent on oil, for now at least, and it doesn't hurt just our country when its flow is disrupted. "
So when someone says this is a war about oil, why do so many conservatives deny it?
Of course, it's about oil. And, in my opinion, there's no reason to run from it.
It's not like it's the first time a commodity has played a part in a war.
Well, I'm not running from it, but some claim that it's ONLY about oil, and it isn't. Of course that's part of it.
Fortunes are at stake here folks.
more arrogant bluster from tyrannical egomaniac
You ever read your posts before you hit the "Post My Message" button?
Just curious.
who me ? A humble little fellow from the land of Gandhi.
Yes you, Naradar.
You're condescending, arrogant, racist, and just plain mean.
I don't know what happened in your life to scar you so badly, but I wish you'd get over it. Because once in awhile, I see a person in you that I genuinly like.
Naradar can come around anytime, as far as I'm concerned.
He actually has some compelling ideas, as opposed the pair who come here every day for the purpose of insulting each other.
Who here does not have their moments of arrogance, condecension and meanness.
I don't think he's a racist.
Hang around long enough, and you become a racist, Nazi, fascist, socialist or communist.
But racist and Nazi are the most common.
Whatever....
:::ROLLS EYES:::
I'm sorry, Naradar. I must have misunderstood you. You're not racist in the least.
I must have misread your brown and white skin references. I must have miunderstood.
Hang around long enough, and you become a racist, Nazi, fascist, socialist or communist.
As if "Liberal" wasn't bad enough, huh Rick?
:-)
A perjorative term in many circles, certainly.
Naradar,
A few posts back you said.
A couple were........
Fine and good. Then look at some of the quotes you made. I posted the number for context as well. You've made some ugly and horrid remarks. I can only go by what you yourself write. You use terms that you know are offensive to some but have no problem doing it.

You will.
Then you can cry like the freak you are, look I'm being opressed. I was never given fair warning because of my ethnicity, see, I told ya, they are racist !
Oh, I'm sorry I thought you were an American. You're the American using words like that so what does that make you ?
Thanks Luv, for taking the time to find the posts.
No problem it wasn't hard to find.
Naradar,
It does, I hate racial slurs I understand using them at times when discussing racism etc. Perhaps, But then you need to preface it more.
Is this really about PC?
hmmm...
PC?
Brothers in Army Take Different Views on War With Iraq
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,80307,00.html
This is too funny, speaking of surrender monkeys.
