And you are right, I could easily take the coin and not tell anyone :) Where does it say I cant do that in the rules!

Well the rules only affect you in as much as you care to claim the prize. But as far as that goes, I believe it did say you had to turn it in as soon as possible.

Way cool finding out that AW lives at my old place in CG!! I've always missed that place big time. It was the perfect place for parties and growing up. Nice property too. 2 1/2 acres of Norway Pine trees. It used to be an old Christmas tree lot. (betcha didn't know that AW) I haven't been by there for 4 years and haven't seen the inside of the house since we moved out in early 1989. I can't wait to see how it looks now. Hey AW, I have a hunt for you. This will be kinda fun for me.... I actually hid something in your house that is probably still there to this day. I'll think up some quick clues to see if you can find it. If not, you'll just have to wait until Jake gets there to find it for you ;o)
As far as Jake finding the thing, all I have to say is simma don na peepa!Due to celebrating my birthday this past weekend at a hotel and today at my moms all day, I never got the chance to even look, even though I was dead sure of the park since Terry's 007 noodle, which helped me figure in most of them prior to that one. (except that squared one of course - good one AW!)
Anyway, I digress. I was a block away with the kid all excited to hunt for the coin when I called Jake to see if he was hunting only to find out that he just found it less than 3 minutes earlier. Before he even called AW I think. Of course that sucked because of the whole 'Jake-found-it syndrome" plus the kid was way bummed out. But I still wasn't bitter about it. Life's too short and I can't see having one of the fun things that I like to do get all PC and such. It's like when the ladies in dresses on their lunch break finds it. It sucks but you deal with it. Oh, well. Off to get hammered and have the wife drive for a change. I'll think up some clues for ya AW while I'm out tonight. I'm starting to feel that sadistic feeling that you talk about. hehe

I don't believe the range on those things is very far and to use the thing, he would have had to have gone through at least a foot of wood.

Marley was with him at coon rapids when he used it, and it most definatly could find it in that "range". Jake also told Marley during the cr hunt that there was no wayhe would use a metal detector for your hunt. He spent all that time in those parks because he was clueless and couldn't figure out the clues, and only went to BC after I told him thats where I had went and why, so you can blame me for that, becauseI won't lie-even to weasles.

The clues and the hunt were fine, the way it was found, not so much. I don't believe for a second he didn't use that metal detector. I would have felt the same way during the PP hunt if the leafblower guy found it.

Now that its over I'm happy to move on.

AW i do agree with reg on all points i just think it's very unsportsman like of him and he knows people hate it when he does things like this and it really makes him look bad every time he does stupid things like this. thats why so many people are mad and enouyed by him. To jake:you know people do not like the way you go about the hunts and the way you act so if you want people to enjoy you'er company you should try to get along with people and not piss them off. just a thought for you.

before Jake found it I didn't see one complaint about his hunting methods

read back farther, there was a complaint- first at the bar, then again this morning after we saw jake with the thing (supposedly) before he found it.

I guess part of the thing is that I believe there is some genuine anger over Jake finding it. But I think it's kind of being misplaced on the metal detector.

Now I'll admit Jake can be obnoxious. He likes to believe the effort he puts into hunting and the success he has had proves that he has some sort of superiority when in fact it may mean nothing more than that he's just more psycho about it than anyone else. And over the next year when Jake asks me, "So Ollie (something I never gave him permission to call me) are people pissed off that I found your treasure?", (and I'm sure he'll ask at least 5 or 6 times), I can honestly say, "Yes Jake, they are pissed. In fact, they hate your guts." And a lot of that he's brought on himself. If Trent really wanted to tell the story of the hunt in his movie, he'd be wise to cast Jake as the villian, because that's basically how he's set himself up. And of course no one likes a story where the villian wins in the end. Everyone wants to believe they have a chance to win, and it gets a bit frustrating when you see the same people winning over and over. It kind of ruins that belief that everyone, including you, has a chance.

So my point is I want to acknowledge that people are upset, but I have my doubts about whether or not the metal detector is the real reason behind those feelings. Rather, I think it's just an easy target to focus that anger on when if actuality, it wasn't that much of a factor. But if we're going to keep doing these hunts and have people participate because they think they're fun, then it's best to just let go of the anger and have fun figuring out the clues, getting out and exploring the parks, and sharing it as a social experience.

it gets a bit frustrating when you see the same people winning over and over

Like you said, it's the "villian" winning that gets everyone upset, I don't think people get upset that Marley finds so many of these mock hunt coins/medallions, he's nice about it and goes about it the right way

misplaced on the metal detector

actually, I tend to believe people when they say they will or will not do something ("No , I would never use the metal detector for one of our mock hunts") and I am more disappointed in Jake than angry. I always try to see the good in people, and see some good qualities in Jake, I have tried to like him and have always been straight forward and honest with him. But he lied and he continues to show this "obnoxious" side, and I can't pretend that I like it.

I feel like always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Yet again, I'm there within 5-10 minutes of it being found.

Why can't we all just get along?

That's a problem that Jake may need to deal with. I don't know that he had fun with the hunt. He was calling me quite a bit and he sounded rather desperate to win. Certainly it's not normal to spend so much time and effort on a prize worth only a couple of hundred dollars, even if you are the competetive type. Jake didn't sound to me like he wanted to win, he sounded like he *had* to win, like his self-respect was dependent on it. I think that's why he resorted to using the detector, even after he said he wouldn't. Now personally, I would be inclined to say that if something like a treasure hunt was inducing that much of an emotional reaction, then maybe it's time for a new hobby. But like I said, that's something he needs to deal with.

So back to the hunt...

What did people think of the clues? Any favorites? Any you didn't like?

I will be there Sat depending on work, I'm on call, but I'll bring some wood if I do come.

All the clues were good! 3 was my favorite, just because I love card games, and 6 was funny :-)

No need to bring wood. We have a whole forest here.

Well I imagine it won't be quite as chaotic as the Rehash Bash so it should be easier to get to know people.

Favorite clue was the Dr. No one.

Interesting about the train and the time not gaining...

I had that figured out to be a time line going from the years BC (not gaining in numbers).

I like #11 with the Ho Ho Ho. I was wondering what clever new way you might put that street into the clues.

The 14 square clue is probably my least favorite cuz I didn't figure that one out. I can't believe how many things I counted.

Allison - I don't know if we'll be able to do Saturday night or not yet...but just in case, could you email address, directions and such please?

You are in hog heaven if you have a forest to burn!

Well I'll admit to taking a sadistic glee in watching everyone trying to figure out what the heck they could be, especially when, in a sense, it was right in front of them all along. Unfortunately, my measure of a good clue is one that at least one or a few people can get. I don't think anyone did get that one, although I did see a few people throw out the idea of 14 squared being 196. Now if they had just taken that step to realize they were looking for 14 squares, as in plural, maybe they would have gotten there. And of course no one caught the middle letter of the first word in every line of clue #2 spelling out "In big log". But I think I heard about someone figuring out just about everything else, including the Dr. No clue which I thought might prove too hard. The train thing also threw people, though that was to be expected. But a few people actually did manage to guess that the coin was hidden in a pocketwatch which left me pretty impressed.

your gonna burn down the forest AW?
how about we cook the rabbit ;)

Newel 1985? walked towards the guy-then he found it!

Cherokee 1998? ---was within 20 feet of that tree!

Merriam - pointed to the field and told ChrisDigger I would be right down -but Jake never really helped me in a spot -so I never got back to Chris Digger -right where it was found 3 days later!

Phalen- I squared off with my arms--"if its here than it is right here" I didnt beleive it was really in that area but if it was than it was right there- 2 days later Jake and Donny flip it up right there!

Marthaler- stood on top of it and squished it into the ground

Mears - stuck my hand under the clock too

Cherokee- was on that corner at the bridge and Smith

COMO - ran with the boys who found it - across the bike humps and into the brush pile - heard him call for Mike and stand to the side of the brush pile but never believed they found it

Phalen-Redbear-I mentioned the area for this park but I never went out to look-I said if its in Phalen it is over in that area-and sure enough!

Harriet-Fozen Butt- I said Covington Inn on clue 3-the hotel and ann tire and cia bell -the bell and lifesaving device on the Covington -the morning I went out there I walked right up to the flag and rocks and Marley says "I searched all over there already" -ofcourse I say "ok" ----geeesh!

Battle Creek -checked that LOG! even pointed it out. geeesh

were there any other hunts this year that I didn't mention! I think this is enough to absorb. I am done for a while. I work my ass off too like most of us to noodle these clues which should be 75% noodle 25% looking-not to have the same person come along and find it- I swear I am not blind-I was more thourough this hunt- geesh. Goodnight everyone. David wonderful clues.

Thanks for the green wishes me2. We didn't head out to eat cause the kid was pretty tired and the wife didn't want to drive.
;-{
Oh well, it's prolly safer here at home anyway. Every bar I passed on the way home from BC was already packed.

AW - I actually liked the 14 squared clue. I like it when I'm stumped and the actual answer is cleaver and acceptable. The harder the better, unless it's really out of the park (so to say). (L’ Etoile du Nord)

yes me2, we all see it. Don't tempt yourself. Just walk away and leave it alone. ;-)

Hey AW, my sis says that your basement is now totally finished. Is this true? Is your roomy S.C.? #***-***97?

chiming in a bit late here. the clues were excellent aw. not quite sure which one was the favorite of them, although the dr. no clue did make me actually go watch the movie. and i wasn't the only one. i'm kinda inclined to agree with cm about the 14 squares clue. i can't even imagine how long that sucker took to write, finding words to fit the pattern you were looking for.

oh, and cm, :: touch ::leaving it alone's just no fun.

Hey AW, my sis says that your basement is now totally finished. Is this true?

Yes, that's where I live and where I am right this moment.

Is your roomy S.C.?

Yes he is. He's off in the Indian Ocean right now getting ready for war.

i'm kinda inclined to agree with cm about the 14 squares clue. i can't even imagine how long that sucker took to write, finding words to fit the pattern you were looking for.

I wrote the first draft back on November 8th. It looked like this:

Because St Paul is The place a lucky coterie will win the race,
You may consider it smart to work together in pairs.
For two heads might help you in linking this one dimensional space
But then again one person alone might still see the squares.

It fit the pattern, but sounded kind of weird I thought. So the real challenge wasn't just fitting the pattern so much as fitting the pattern and making it sound at least semi-natural. And then of course I had to rework it again a bit more when the PP hunt started and they changed their rhyme scheme.

Yeah, U2ESD! I gotta get off of here and back to trying to get more Irish. ;~1

How da hell did ya steal that Joe AW? Well, I guess you deserve it if anyone does.

He's off in the Indian Ocean right now getting ready for war

A big tip of the hat to him from me and the majority of Americans right now.The next 48 hours will be extremely emotional for him I'm sure.

Yeah guys, Jake and I spent about 3 hours at Battle Creek on Thursday and walked within a few feet of it. We walked through all of BC, and I mean all of it. Jake is devoted to medallion hunting, no one can deny that, he found it, deal with it.
