The future of Mock Hunting

POSTED BY TMK ON PUCK POSSE SITE:

I know I've talked with a few people about this, but I wanted to see what others thought. So far this year we've had a lot of hunts which has been great, but I think that we should look at coming to an understanding on when to have hunts and how many we should have. AW's has been an annual event. But last year was the first time we had mock hunt throughout the year. Jake had a hunt, followed by Marley, then Jake again. Jake's last hunt was between Halloween and Thanksgiving I believe. We ended up that whoever found the treasure ran the next hunt. This year people have been starting hunts here and there. I like having more people who share the hunting passion, and having more competition. I personally think that we're having too many hunts. I think it takes away from those hunters with families, because it messes up their family lives. Houses aren't kept up as much, spouses are upset more, etc. Cell phone bills go up. People will get worn out. Prizes will be smaller. I know we all love hunting. It gets to be too much at times. I also know that people have hunts that they want to do. Holly has one, Reg has one, Kilty has another, the clownz have one, Lilman has one. I've had thoughts of having a hunt, and I know people like Ares and Me2 have thought of clues. I'd like for everyone to have the opportunity to run their own hunts. I think we need to spread things out just a bit more. Have a bit of a system or way about who has hunts when. What do you guys think?

MY RESPONSE:

No problemo, It'd probably be best if I waited with mine anyways. It'd be cool if my hunt could be an annual tradition. I'd be able to fine tune my clues a little better... unlike this year when i was changing clues even after the hunt had begun. So yeah --- I'm limiting myself to one hunt each year, shortly after the PP hunt. Maybe we could work out a schedule so Redbear and FrozenButtox could come in between my and AW's hunt each year, and more would follow after AW's.

What does everybody think?

you can follow the clue writer to a park and freak him/her out while she/he is hiding the coin -make them think someone is watching them.

Then tell me where the medallion is hidden :)

can i hang them on your chandelier though? hurry up and get the living room finished so i have a place to hang them. and besides, if i were gonna put them in your dresser drawers, i'd put them in mark's. just for the entertainment factor :)

I didn't say chandelier cause I don't have one. It has to be a crystal chandelier like the Buttery.

But I to will take the honor of haunting you me2!

I would be nice-- I would only make sure that I ALWAYS open your thg to COMO--and your screen saver would also always be COMO!

I guess I could stand over you at night chanting COMO COMO so that you would always go there for every clue, every hunt! (geshh you would be right more then wrong)hehe

Actually I take that back... since I "was" dead.. and am back now... that makes me the Undead... which is even cooler. I can jack ya for the medallion, and you can sit there and shoot me with huge bullet's and throw grenades at me, but it aint even gonna phase me... Imma just laugh at it, and go "Hell nah.." and then keep on goin.

Maybe you need to use an icicle through the heart. And if nothing else, beheading will still kill a good 70-80% of evil creatures.

I can so see it now...

So back on topic, we never did resolve anything about future Mock Hunts at the party last weekend nor on the board here. I think we first need to figure out who still wants to run one? I know we have hunts coming up from Marley, Lilman, Jake, and possibly the Clowns and Ares/Me2. Is there anyone else? Or are we going to have an offseason?

Wed, 03/26/2003 - 2:00 PM Permalink
me2

well first off- Ares and I were teamed up for, I think it was 2 hunts. I personally don't want to write a hunt for a year off. I have many things going on here at home that I don't need to be at the top of any list. Now if Ares wants to have a hunt thats fine by me. Just so I am not forgotten in the future-I do eventually want to do one.

I saw in the puck posse that they had a couple people there that plan on hunts- so I don't know how any of that effects the plans here.

I also think we may want to examine the prizes. When I did my first two hunts, I put up a prize myself. It was something pretty small (a Monopoly game and tickets to see the St. Paul Saints). Unlike the Pioneer Press, the Mock Hunt generated no income for me and any prize I offered was out of my own pocket. Last year the PP hunt went short and a lot of people were still itching for a hunt. Jake (or maybe it was Snake) came up with the idea of donating money to my hunt to try and get more people to do it. And because there was such a need for another hunt, a lot of other people joined in and the prize quickly shot up to $500.

This year it was different. The PP Hunt went to 12 clues, giving most hunters their fill. Once again the Mock Hunt became largely the domain of just the avid hunters, though a few others were still gracious enough to throw in some money for the prize, and I threw in $75 myself.

But really, I don't think we can truly expect people to keep contributing money to other people's hunts. Nor is there much incentive for anyone to put up a large prize on their own since they have no way to get it back, and then it's only a matter of how many people they really want to do their hunt.

So let's think about this and see if there's another way to handle the prizes. One idea may be to form a sort of Mock Hunting association that would handle both the scheduling of the hunts as well as coordinating the prizes. People could donate money or prizes to the association and then it could be divided among the sponsored hunts. The main advantage of something like this is we could maybe have a better chance of raising money. We could possibly put out a publication or something and use the money from the sales and advertising towards the prizes. We could hold fundraising activities. If people wanted to donate things, we could reward them with recognition in the publication. It would be a bit of work in getting it all together, but it may turn out to be worth it.

I think that we need to do like last year. The hunting off season goes from Thanksgiving up to the Winter Carnival hunt.

word up on that, kids. i might even go so far as to say halloween would be the last allowable date for a first clue.

Well yeah, the last time frame would be between Halloween and Thanksgiving, with I think realistically the time frame being between Halloween and the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

I think I have the STAR AND TRIBUNE as a sponser now to!
I have been working with people there on having a summer Hunt in mpls. They have been watching all the mock hunts since last year! And I think/hope this year will be the year for the 1st Annual Aquatenial Summer Hunt!
But anyway I havent confirmed it all the way! but it looks like they will be a sponser for my hunt this year and donate $50 and a 1 year subscrption to the Star And Tribune! And MAYBE MAYBE get my clues in the paper!(but my hunt is in Ramsey County/St. Paul that is his problem)

Cooler----

well as long as they're saying they're the twin cities' news paper everytime they call and try and make me subscribe, that ought not be a problem, marley.

Those are great ideas AW! We could also give recognition through our various web sites, maybe add a sponser page to CC and go for some local/small businesses? Not necissarily ads, but a list of sponsers with a link to their info or website. This could also work for some individuals, like Lilman with his dj biz, but we'd need something smaller (and more personal) for others.

Also... if your getting tired of them calling you... tell them to put you on their "permanent do-not-call list"

they have 2 different do-not-call lists... a temporary, and a permanent.... they get mad sneaky... cause alotta times when they call people, the people always go "TAKE ME OFF YOUR DAMN LIST!!!" and hang up... so then they get put on the temporary list, which means they wont get called again for atleast 3 months.... the permanent list means you wont get any calls from them again, for atleast another year.

just a heads-up.

Can we write off our contributions to a non-profit group even if their not a registered non -profit group? Does anyone know? I heard that if we were searching for the medallion for the PP you could write off mileage and stuff because it is like working except for commission---when you find the coin they charge you taxes so-if you dont find it you dont get paid for all your hard work-hense --commission lost but write offs gained? Can we even go as far as to write off the whole $10 grand for commissions lost? just a thought.hehehehe

actually that would be one real good reason to actually incorporate as a non-profit. my donation of bandwidth, and domain name registration charges. all tax deductible. hmmmmm.

Not likely, no. There are some fairly strict guidelines regarding what constitutes a tax deductible charitable contribution. I know there are some donations you can make that are not tax deductible and they tell you that when you make them.

I heard that if we were searching for the medallion for the PP you could write off mileage and stuff because it is like working except for commission---when you find the coin they charge you taxes so-if you dont find it you dont get paid for all your hard work-hense --commission lost but write offs gained?

You can try it, though I suspect if you ever got audited, you'd probably be asked to prove that there actually was some sort of established working relationship. And I don't know if they would consider the prize money as a commission since you didn't actually perform a service for the PP.

Can we even go as far as to write off the whole $10 grand for commissions lost?

Since you don't get taxed on money you never had anyway, I don't know how you can write it off.

actually that would be one real good reason to actually incorporate as a non-profit. my donation of bandwidth, and domain name registration charges. all tax deductible. hmmmmm.

I'm not sure you'd have to be a non-profit specifically. You could just write them off as business expenses.

Lets see...we gave them publicity opps. and bought their newspapers...I consider that a service. Free advertisment for them comes at a price. Word of mouth to friends and family about the PP.
and if I pick up one peice of trash in a park that is donating my time to the government and I can write off the mileage it took to get to my donated designation.
