THX, you're a real law and order kind of guy.

Tough break. The police have to weigh the issue of public safety, versus your right to walk down the street in the middle of a riot.

They who sacrifice freedom for temporary safety deserve neither.

From what I saw of the scene the people who got sprayed were told to move on.

I still don't think the punishment fits the crime.

I guess I must have been too protected by my parents because...

Well that was you. You can't expect everyone to do something a certain way or think a certain way just because you do.

Ignorance is not an excpetable excuse for not following the rules.

They didn't mean any harm in it. They were trying to make a positive contribution in fact. But now that they've inadvertantly broken the rules, the best solution is to throw them out of school? Don't ask any questions. Don't consider the circumstances. Just throw them out with all the rest and get them believing they're a bad person. That will ALWAYS be the best solution. Is that what you're saying?

That may be true, I don't know. Sounds like quite an incentive not to do something stupid like join in on a riot.

Well that's an easy attitude to have as long as you're on the right side of the law. Heck, if someone steals a candy bar, just execute them. What does it matter what the punishment is as long as you're not the one stealing candy bars? They knew they shouldn't have stolen it and execution would certainly be quite the incentive not to.

Obviously I don't care much for this attitude. It implies there are only good people and bad people and the bad people deserve whatever they get because they're bad people. No hint of Christian charity. No caring for your fellow man. If they're less than perfect then screw 'em.

I say if someone screws up, they're still a human being and in need of help. In some cases punishment will be a help to them in realizing they're making a mistake. In other cases people are capable of recognizing mistakes on their own and punishment is just a waste of resources. If someone makes a mistake and does something they shouldn't have, our goal shouldn't be to extract vengeance. It should be to do what we can to help them realize their mistake and correct it and still hopefully have the chance to reach their full potential.

No I don't expect everyone to believe or think like myself but I believe I do have the right to believe that everyone should live by the rules and if you break them you better be ready to accept your punishment.

You state that they didn't mean to do no harm. Maybe they didn't well then maybe they shouldn't be punished huh? While were at it, let's not punish any people arrested for killing someone while driving drunk because they didn't mean any harm. They were out celebrating and just trying to get home to their family. Why make 2 families suffer by putting the offender in jail.

THANK YOU JQ's Gal for the ED update :)

If you cross the street without looking, you just might get run over by a Mack truck and killed.

I'd call that zero tolerance.

sometimes the humor that comes from you surprises me
hahaha you watch from behind the curtains but when you have something to say its profound -just like AW and his response :)It's tolerated every time you cross the street without looking and don't get hit. WoW! you guys are making me use my brain tonight and I am not even blond!

Don't we all make mistakes? Should our whole life always be judged on who we were at our worst moment?

That worries me come 'judgement day'...but I have a feeling most of anything I have ever done has been done by others already and I shouldn't be too embaressed--

Off to go play in the sprinkler with the kid.

I sent mine out to play in the sprinkler while I took a nice shower...unfortunately they stepped in the garden. with all the water it made the yard muddy cause the grass is not ready for kids yet. I am glad Mark is coming home after dark so he wont see (at least not tonight).

But think of all the kids who would not know how to cut an onion properly, if not for your speech. Do we want to risk closing down possible benefits for such an absolutionist policy?

Heck, how are they going to teach home-ec? There are knives in those kitchens. What about shop? Plenty of potential weapons there. How about geometry? A good compass could be used as a weapon. The problem becomes, where does one draw the line? And who is the one drawing that line?? Does their line agree with my line?

They who sacrifice freedom for temporary safety deserve neither.

So we should allow them to continue rioting? Should the police just sit back and allow it to happen?

Heck, if someone steals a candy bar, just execute them.

That's silly. I said before, we aren't talking about capital punishment here. I don't think being expelled for rioting can be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

It implies there are only good people and bad people and the bad people

It implies there are good actions and bad action. Both of which have consequences.

I say if someone screws up, they're still a human being and in need of help.

It's not the role of law enforcement or the judicial system to "Help" them.

Unfortunately, I feel that if a few of us took the law into our own hands and kicked a few select asses (provided that the rest of the mob didn't want to kick our ass) we would get arrested for being a vigilantes. I totally understand the whole concept around taking the law into your own hands as being illegal but I would assume that some cops might just look the other way when something like that might be happening.

As I said before, I needed it and it didn't happen until much later in life. By then all that was needed was a few select individuals to voice their opinion to get me to 'see the light' (as it were). But I know that it would of taken a bit more at those younger ages.

well I saw the news last night - I didn't know some students started cars on fire and looted and broke windows to business' ...I thought it was more disobedience to police and fighting. It was hard to believe it came after WE won the games. How do we know some of those students wernt from the other school? I think the later above should be a 1st strike BUT the fires and destruction of property definately should get jail time which then if they miss school becomes the students fault not the school when the students recieve an 'F' in classes & tests missed.

I doubt that there was anyone from U of New Hampshire at the U of M Saturday night, so unfortunately that leaves only home grown idiots to blame for what happened. 11 have been arrested so far and more to come as video tapes are being analyzed. Guilty is guilty when it's breaking the law. RT says he's not holding back on any charges just because they're students. The law is the law.
You go big guy!

So what does everyone think of the possibility of removing all AID from those that are found guilty? The only problem is what about those w/out AID? Like they said last night about the people running onto the field in Chicago. How about setting them up in jail for a couple of months and fining them $10,000-$15,000. I would like to see how many spike marks that clown had in the back of his legs. Anything he got he deserved.

I caught a nasty cold and unfortunately lost the energy to post the last couple of days. I'm still not really feeling up to a debate, but I do plan on trying to go ahead with the party on Friday at my place. Whether or not it will be a bonfire will depend on the weather. The last I heard it's supposed to be dry that day, but it's supposed to be pretty wet between now and then so it might be rather muddy with wet wood. But there's still a lot we can do inside. I have stuff we can make pizzas with and tons of games. If anyone needs directions let me know. Otherwise I was thinking of gathering around 7pm.

I just heard the most scary thing they are coming up with a lojack for kid's. It may sound good to keep track of lost children but just imagine some tyrant getting a hold of this technology. Talk about black helicopters ... shiver ....
