Reading the papers tomorrow should be interesting. I want to see how the Vikes explain this. McCombs was for sure involved. Red needs to sell this team. He just alienated his whole fan base. Williams? When Kennedy and Suggs are still on the board?
You know, this could be a very underrated move by the Vikings. This is a player that they seemingly really wanted. They would have been questioned probably taking him at 7. They couldn't work out a trade. Let a few other teams pick, then get him at a lower slot and have to pay him less. Save some money, still get the guy you want.
He hasn't alienated them yet. Williams sounds like a solid pick. The draft is such a crapshoot anyways. You look at guys like Ryan Leaf, Tony Mandarich. These guys were going to be so awesome, teams probably would have been criticized to pass on them. Look at where they are now. Williams could turn out to be a pro-bowl player while Sullivan and Robertson turn out to be busts. Wait until the season start. The Vikings fans may get frustrated now, but once the season starts they should be back and excited.
Williams may be a good player in the NFL, but I live in Oklahoma. I watched Wiliams play for OSU. We could have traded down and got him around picks 15 or 16. I am surprised Kennedy has not been picked yet.
I don't know if you can assume he would go there. Some probably assumed that Sullivan would last until 15 or 16, or even 11 to 14. He didn't though. It just depends on the team and what they want. As far as if he will want #7 money, he may try, but I doubt he would get it.
I can see the mock drafts for next year, where people will move the Vikings down a slot or two from where they are supposed to pick. "The Bears and the Cowboys get their picks in before Minnesota picks Joe Schmoe from Middle Central Northern State."
I watched that and I really felt sorry for Chavous. Trying to justify what happened and not try to make management mad. I just hope we do not end up in a hold out situation.
Lets look to round 2. Who do you think we will draft? Think it will be a D position?
Yeah, I think it will be a D position. There should be some QBs going soon, plus some guys like Boss Bailey are still around. There are some good quality offensive people. I could see them taking someone like Eric Steinbach.
Any chance Andre Woolfolk falls to us in the second round? Hell, lets make this an all Oklahoma draft for the Vikes! We could take Griffin and then Savage. =)
And yes, there is a chance that Woolfolk will drop to the Vikings. DB, DE, or Henderson/Bailey at linebacker are possibilities on the defensive side. OL would be a possibility on the offensive side. But we don't know if a highly-rated player will drop to them.
You know I still want to know what the F happened? It still bugs me that we did nothing and I mean NOTHING with our seven pick. We just sat on our asses as other teams jumped in and made picks #7 and #8. With NO compensation to the Vikes sliding to #9. It does not make sense to me and I will be reading the papers tomorrow for a justification. I am very disappointed in the Vikes. This makes NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER!!!!!!
good potential as a playmaker if you're willing to beef up the front 4 ala the bears w/urlacher or the ravens w/killer ray, but marshall's a box of rocks. he's not a scheme type that you can rely on to play gaps. TM does have incredible speed and strength (below the neck).
bears take rex! run the highlight reel now, cuz it's all downhill for grossman after today, lol! welcome to the nfl's QB penal colony, sonny boy.
rivalry aside, i feel for ya'll. two years of tice stutter stepping with a great pick hasto be frustrating. i just hope williams doesn't look as good as mckinnie.
so the bills rolled the dice. welcome to a #1 that'll be sitting on the sidelines all 16 games.
They are talking about trading Withrow because they have a good relationship with him, he wants to start, and the Vikings would like to give him that opportunity.
As far as what happened with the Vikings, I think that they were just so eager to trade out that they pressed it too long. Then the other two teams knew what they wanted and jumped at the opportunity.
True for all but Gross, we did not need an O linemen. What will be interesting over the next year or so will be the comparison of Suggs, Kennedy, Sullivan and Williams. Which one was the better draft choice? Time will tell.
Yeah, those players were available. The staff had an idea of who they wanted. They know the direction the team wants to go, the kind of player they are looking for, who they think will best help them. They had their player targeted, they got him. I think it was a good thought process, just bad execution.
Its hard to compare draft choices though. Some of these guys are going into successful teams, others are going into bad teams. Some are going into positions where they can be successful, others are not.
Look at some players around the league. Todd Steussie we had, he was a pro bowl player. We drafted him, we developed him, we had him in our system. He went on to Carolina and he hasn't really been that outstanding. Priest Holmes had an awesome year with KC last year, but they didn't draft him. It really depends on what opportunity the player has, how well his skills are used, and the players around him.
I would have taken Kennedy or Suggs regardless , I added Gross' name cause he was another top talent still on the board. He's not the 3rd or 4th best OT. He is THE best one on the board. Or was anyway.
Just goes to show that the draft is a crap shoot. This still does not excuse the Vikes for the way they ran it with the first pick. There should not have been this much confusion.
Yeah, we could use offensive line depth. Look at Matt Birk though. He was taken in the 8th round I think. And he's a pro bowl player. Get a D lineman that can help right away, and then find a gem of an O lineman in the later rounds that you can let develop behind the others.
I'm happy with this pick. Sometimes it's not about the big name guys. Sure you can get hyped about them all you want. There's no guarantee that they are the best player for the team though. I like the Vikings pick.
VIKES BLEW IT BIG F-ING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I AM PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!
This really needs to explained. We take Williams????? This is BS!
This is funny. You know, I think I have a rationale for this. The Vikings can pay this guy money of a 9th pick instead of a 7th pick, save some money.
You should see the posters on the Strib board, they are going nuts.
Just think what the draft would be like if the Jets were doing this. The fans there would be going nuts, starting a riot.

A lot of talk about weather Williams will want pick #7 money even though he was picked #9. Any thoughts on this?

Could we be looking at another hold out?
Very possible. I don't see that he should get #7 money though. Maybe if there is a problem it could be comromised at #8 money.
what do you think of those EA sports commercials with the rookies? I'm liking them, they're funny.
They are funny! Get my B....A .....G.... LOL!
I can see the mock drafts for next year, where people will move the Vikings down a slot or two from where they are supposed to pick. "The Bears and the Cowboys get their picks in before Minnesota picks Joe Schmoe from Middle Central Northern State."
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!! Could happen! =)
Hmm, the NFL player roundtable is saying that Williams should be paid #7 money. Interesting.
I watched that and I really felt sorry for Chavous. Trying to justify what happened and not try to make management mad. I just hope we do not end up in a hold out situation.

Well, at least we're not Cardinals fans. What the heck were the Cardinals doing?
This has been a strange day!
One nice thing is that its gone by fairly quickly. But I guess you can't be surprised that it's strange considering the talent involved.
wolvie,
The Vikes have to be talking trade with this much time going off the clock.
machias ducks out quickly, lone st*r beer bottle in hand ....
but you've gotta love this kid's football pedigree.
Would have been better if he was a SOONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any chance Andre Woolfolk falls to us in the second round? Hell, lets make this an all Oklahoma draft for the Vikes! We could take Griffin and then Savage. =)
There are some interesting people still on the draft board. Have to wonder if they will fall to the Vikings. Steinbach, Bailey, McGahee.
And yes, there is a chance that Woolfolk will drop to the Vikings. DB, DE, or Henderson/Bailey at linebacker are possibilities on the defensive side. OL would be a possibility on the offensive side. But we don't know if a highly-rated player will drop to them.
I don't see the Vikes taking McGahee. They will go defense again or a WR.
Hell, lets make this an all Oklahoma draft for the Vikes!
draft? how about an all OK off-season?!?
All Right!!!!!!!!!
sooner alum torrance marshall for a MN 3rd-rounder. deal?
Sure why not?
You know I still want to know what the F happened? It still bugs me that we did nothing and I mean NOTHING with our seven pick. Sure why not?
It looks like Denny's still drafting. You don't pass on Suggs and Kennedy for Williams, The THIRD best defensive tackle. My God, how awful!
PUKE!
We waiting all these months in eager anticipation of THIS?!!!!
Somebody shoot me! NOW!
Briefly:The Vikings will try to trade backup center Cory Withrow during the draft, but they may have to accept a pick in next year's draft.
jaws comparing grossman to favre ... puh-lease.
Agreed.
Later machias, thanks for posting with us today!

You had Suggs, Kennedy, Trufant, Gross, etc.
WTF?!

Exactly! What it amounts to is a loss of a third round draft pick for the Vikes.
Its hard to compare draft choices though. Some of these guys are going into successful teams, others are going into bad teams. Some are going into positions where they can be successful, others are not.
We need offensive line depth. a guy like Gross would be great. Dixon is getting older. Makes more sense than the third best tackle at number 9.
