1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Yahtzee - the clue says the name is in many books - so I don't think its that obscure - to be in a book about St. Paul history.

Gail- i'm thinking COMO, there are statues there, i was thinking maybe the famous name is on a statue or something, and most of the clues can be fit to COMO. problem - i don't who the statues are named for. can anyone help?

Frank - I'm sticking away from Webster. The clue says the name is in a book, not the name of a book. Just my opinion though - could be wrong.

Dave--An iconoclast is someone who opposes a religious image(icon), not someone who worships an icon.

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 9:21 AM Permalink
lildebi

dave, iconoclasm has to do with orthodox religion

Merriam Park is still a good one. Longfellow is good.

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 9:22 AM Permalink

Dave - iconoclast isn't someone who worships an icon, but someone who defies one.

Boreas - I think they've referenced statues at Como when its been there in the past. Check it out. I like your idea.

Annie - is this the first time you've been on the cooler?

I live in Como and I haven't seen too many people here. I live off the golf course though...near the lake.

Yahtzee - Sorry, you are correct. I have it written correctly, but typed it wrong. So - What I meant, is this rules out a couple of parks, one in particular.

Fri, 01/29/1999 - 9:26 AM Permalink

Annie - I think you are addressing me. The reason I asked was because the whole Newell Park thing has been discussed since the very beginning. Don't know if anyone is still leaning towards there or not. Heard the park is all dug up though.

I think they mean icon as something or someone that is important or familiar to many people. The clue states to go AWAY from such a thing. i.e. be willing to become an iconoclast.

I am thinking of the Ham's Mansion that burned down so many years ago. Which rules out Swede Hollow. 1 of my two choices.

Ok, thanks Sister Sister, I wasn't in on that discussion.

Annie - no problem! It's fun to have new minds speaking here! Hope you enjoy it - if you can be patient enough to withstand the server problems. Don't be alarmed if you get error messages from time to time - telling you Web Crossing Server off, etc.

Morning, Still haven't come to my 100% pure decison as to the park. My only addition to this chat is that I think it may be in a CD case or similiar. Clue 4's play on words, new-well, and "blast" from the past and clue 5's "DISCerning" lead me to this. A "blast from the past" as in music (maybe) ,but in 1984 the medallion was at Newell park and found taped to a 45 record. Maybe they are refering us to that. Iconoclast in thesarsus lists "critic" , on a shot in the dark PP's music critics are Fleming and Walsh. But only walsh is a street in St. Paul, 2 blocks off of Phalen. So the critic part is out for me. But I think it may be secured to a CD, like in '84 at Newell.

Hello All I Now have found meaning in all of the clues except...Iconoclast. I know what it means and it doesn't go with anything. Since they ussually keep it simple I am to assume that Iconoclast is a word scramble. However I need help cracking it.
