By watching what my relatives have gone through over the past 50 years- I worry that they either didn't really need most of what they were told to take by a doctor OR that they were taking so many different pills that it screws up your body instead of really helping!
I plan at least for now to NEVER take a whole bunch of pills just cause my doctor will get paid by the drug companies to put me on something! I better really be sick with something! Hopefully taking care of our bodies now will make a difference for the better when we age. Maybe they should be just plain paying for preventative health!
One of the reasons that people's prescription drug costs are rising is precisely BECAUSE the drug companies have, through R&D, found ways to help ailments that previously could only be handled through invasive surgery. Overall health care costs go down when you can take a pill, even an expensive one, instead of undergoing surgery.
"Duke University economist Henry Grabowski found that while drug profits can be as high as 20 percent, the real return on investment in research and development is about 9 percent. Indeed, Grabowski found that only the top 10 percent of all drugs actually bring a return on investment. The hefty profits from these blockbusters in any one year have to cover the costs of the other 90 percent, even while drug companies must spend billions more on future research for such diseases as cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's and schizophrenia. Hence, that 9 percent return is venture capital for medical progress."
They can't very well say they need to raise or have higher prices for R&D, when their advertising and sales people cost them MORE than what they invest in R&D.
In 1999, for instance, the pharmaceutical industry spent $13.9 billion on advertising and promotion. (Half the promotion costs, incidentally, were for drug samples that doctors give to patients for free.) R&D expenditures for 1999 were more than $24 billion.link
Unless you have actually been in Viet Nam or the Korean War and had to be face to face with death and the people back home not caring about what happens to you then you really have no place here saying he is a bad person just because he has smoked. (he could be a bad person for other reasons ;). Heck if that is all he ever did thats bad in his life than he is probly one of the better people in this world ! But I really doubt that cause everyone has done something in their lives that is not 'perfect'.
There is not one person on this Earth that should judge the life of another - oh yes, this is hard-I sure am at fault for judging but also soooo glad I have never had to be in some of those other peoples shoes to make some of their decisions that got them where they are today.
um, billfold? do you think the oppinions you give us in the forum are tainted by the drugs you took? :) just wondering
He's admitted to all that in the past. Then he makes himself out to be this poor disabled veteran because a couple of boxes fell on him. Of course he blamed someone else for that. Couldn't be because he was stoned, now could it?
He's STILL living for something (or should I say nothing) that happend 30 years ago. Guys like him are a dime a dozen. They irk my butt.
Kennedy told the crowd: "I don't need Bush's tax cut. I have never worked a [bleeping] day in my life."
Bwaahh, well at least he's honest (and probably loaded)
As sometimes happens with Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), he let his mouth race ahead of his brain Wednesday night at a gathering of Young Democrats at the Washington nightspot Acropolis. After presidential candidate Howard Dean spoke, Kennedy delivered an impassioned peroration against President Bush's tax cut. We hear that Kennedy told the crowd:
"I don't need Bush's tax cut. I have never worked a [bleeping] day in my life." With that he got the audience's attention -- the dropping-jaws kind. "He droned on and on, frequently mentioning how much better the candidates would sound the more we drank," a witness told us. "Finally, he had to be stopped by a DNC volunteer." Kennedy's spokesman, Ernesto Anguilla, told us yesterday: "He was talking to the crowd; it was a rally-the-troops kind of speech about the tax cut. He was energizing the crowd and got caught up in it and used an unfortunate word, which he regrets using. . . . And no one pulled him off the stage."
Kenneth Lay of Enron fame is on theHeinz Center Board of Trusteesalong with Teresa Heinz (the founder and Vice Chair of the group and wife of John Kerry). Of course there is no hypocrisy involved in any of Kerry's statements about Bush/Lay.
I've got nothing but respect for all that President Bush has done.
He's handled the good and the bad with grace. 9/11, the space shuttle tragedy, the war with Iraq, etc. People bitch about having no post war plan. Like he has to run their government for them, too? Get real.
The only people who have a problem with what Bush has done are pussy liberals who don't have the balls to take charge and initiate anything.
"People bitch about having no post war plan. Like he has to run their government for them, too? "
In a word, Yes.
U.S. blows in, ravages the country, destroys the infrastructure and then says: We're gone. That would be abandonment.
We broke Iraq. Now we gotta fix it. The U.S. is saddled with a multi-year task. Maybe decades. If the Bush administration wasn't up for it, they shouldn't have gone in the first place.
The Court has now virtually stripped states of the power to legislate in the realm of sexual morality.
No entity should have the power to legislate "sexual morality." Legislation should be based on harm to others.
As for affirmative action, it's an idea whose time has come and gone. All minority groups will now jump on O'Connor's 25-year statement to justify anything and everything for the next quarter of a century. By the time it has passed, they'll have thought of something else to keep it going.
Allowing consenting adults to do what they like together leads to anarchy and chaos? It depends on what they do. Not all actions should be condoned on the basis that the parties involved consent.
You want a camera in every bedroom, Jethro? No one has suggested this. Why do you bring up such an absurd idea?
Not all actions should be condoned on the basis that the parties involved consent.
nor should they not be permitted because someone has a stick up their ass and doesn't like the behavior. if someone's getting a blow job, and you're not the one receiving it, what business of it is yours or anyone else's?
If you want to legislate sexual activity, how else are you going to enforce it?
You enforce it when it comes up as it it did in the Texas case. How do you enforce any laws? Usually after the fact when the acts at issue have become known.
nor should they not be permitted because someone has a stick up their ass and doesn't like the behavior. That is your opinion and you should be free to express it to your legislative representative. If a community wants to enforce a moral code it isn't the business of six justices on a federal court.if someone's getting a blow job, and you're not the one receiving it, what business of it is yours or anyone else's? If the community wants it be their business then they should have it as their business. Six elitists shouldn't be able to impose their morality on the whole country. That is what has happened.

our insurance now pretty much covers medications/prescriptions except the co-pays -that should NOT change just because of your age.
I'm all for profits.
Bill, it's marketing, and it's a cost of doing business. How do you sell your product unless you advertise it?
However, I don't think the drug companies are all guys with halos. They lobbied to keep generics out of the upcoming prescription drug bill.
So fold says drugs are priceless then bashes the R&D and advertising that get the drugs to the people????????????????????????????????????

Overall though, when a doctor tried to get you onto 10 plus pills a day there just has to be a bad effect from this! 1-3 pills I can see.
Typical Liberal. Turn tail and hide fold. You're good at it.
Don't be fooled people. He's looking in.
I'm sure his time with his father was priceless. And Why? Because of the medications developed by the companies he detests. He said it.
fold admits to smoking dope among other things for 25 years and I'M the nut case?
That 25 years included his years in the service while he was "protecting" us.

gimme a bit, and i'll find where aw has posted it in the war on drugs thread.
I think the current effort to legalize pot is contolled by big chips and big twinkies ;)
Just kidding.
me2-me2-me2, fold was NEVER in Vietnam.
fold was NEVER in Korea.
fold NEVER saw combat.
fold NEVER saw death.
fold used while in the service.

That's just my opinion.
That eye is going to give me nightmares tonight.
Then that also goes for the doper too...right?
He's never been to places I've been or did what I've done. Yet he passes judgment on me on a regular basis.
Why haven't you taken him to task on that?
me2 meant your opinions are so strange they must be dope induced.
There ya go me2. He smoked bales of dope while in the Navy. The mighty Vet.
I've been going back and forth with fold for years. I can certainly make an accurate judgment about him.
A little drunken honesty from a Kennedy.
Bwaahh, well at least he's honest (and probably loaded)

Remember what Bud was banned from Pioneer Planet for. Take a look at Frosti's pick and justify that. LOL HYPOCRITES!
Since no one here works at the PioneerPlanet that's probably something you should take up with them.
Stewatfan. Let's see. Who would Stewart be?
It's your favorite conservative, Lundstrum.
Tony Stewart, Winston Cup Racing champion.
Bud
Isn't that more like a demolition derby than a race?
Formula I racing might interest me if I took the time,
Bud's gone?

"Countless judicial decisions and legislative enactments have relied on the ancient proposition that a governing majority's belief that certain sexual behavior is 'immoral and unacceptable' constitutes a rational basis for regulation."
What is he the Terminiator????
He is toast just like bin Laden. Otherwise we would have heard/seen from him.
Anyone who still thinks this court is conservative deludes himself and deceives those people who have voted, again and again, to stop these renegade justices from imposing their ideology upon our society.
The Court has now virtually stripped states of the power to legislate in the realm of sexual morality.
