2003 ThoseMedalingKids Mock Hunt

Submitted by ThoseMedallingKids on

Here is all the pertinent information on the hunt:

The TMK mock hunt will start on Wednesday, September 17, and end on Sunday, September 28.

Clues will be released at 9 pm each night.

There will be 12 clues in all.

The treasure will be hidden on public land in Ramsey County (stay out of the fairgrounds, off the indian mounds)

The treasure will not be hidden in a spot that will endanger hunters (along a cliff, under an electrical box, on the water of a lake/river, etc)

If there are questions or concerns, please try reaching me by email or egram. I will have my cell phone with me, but while I am at work it will be off. I will check messages during breaks though.

Prize will be announced. Donations are welcome.

I discovered that Plum's has a two for one coupon in the Happenings book if anyone else has one.

This hunt taught me that I need to go to all the parks with my THG and write everything in that I see so I don't have to go when it's 30 below out :)

That would be a good move LL. Is the Map Guy ever going to update his book?

Steve will update his book. First he wants to get rid of the copies he still has. Then he'll work on the updated version. Speaking from experience though, its better if you can get out to the parks yourself and see what is there first-hand.

You know, one thing about last year's hunt I learned was know your history. Another was of course off site landmarks. Those are two areas I'd like to focus more effort on myself.

A Motley Crew if I ever seen one.

I went to a championship football game for my nephew. His team lost but it was still good seeing him kick some ass out there.

I'm sorry I didn't make it. Magic States/Providences are coming up really soon so I had to practice and tweak up my deck. When I said I could come I was almost sure I wouldn't have my deck done for States so thats why.

I was thinking of doing a hunt that had tricky clues, but was easy to find if you figured the clues out. Well, I guess TMK's was kind of like that, but I was thinking this would be more of a speed thing in that somebody actually could possibly find it on clue one.

I used to play Magic. I still have all my cards. I had some pretty good decks. I'm not even sure what the rules are these days.

For a couple years I participated in a sort of speed hunt with a group at my church (they called it a "SteepleChase"). Was actually really fun. Even had buttons made up, perhaps I should wear em when I'm out hunting this year (seeing as I gotta wear a winter carnival button anyway).

Basically, there was a couple that planned it, went around in our case to a bunch of churches (and actually some parks too) in the area and made up clues about specific items located at the church (ex. a statue, sign, landmark, etc.) and would ask a question about it that you would have to answer correctly. Sometimes the question would state what the object was and you would have to write down what location (church/park/whereever) and sometimes it would give you the location and ask what the object was, and a bunch of variations on that theme.

The other deal was we broke into groups, each one in a vehicle, and we all started around 4pm, and drove around to answer as many of the questions/solve as many of the riddles or clues as possible. Sometimes if a person knew for sure what it was, they could answer it without making a stop at the place to check it out. Points were awarded at the end for correct answers, and subtracted for wrong answers (so making a guess could cost you) and also if you arrived back at the meeting place on time or not (got a lot of points subtracted for coming back too late).

For the two times we did it, my team won both times, maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. But, in actuallity, it could be a useful activity for hunting practice (not only solving clues, but getting more of them solved and racing the clock, not to mention instead of longer clues that point to one object, you get a clue for every object so they're easier to solve, and you can get through more).

Anyone else ever heard of something like this?

Sounds similiar to what I was thinking of for the "Tour de Parks". But I think it would take a lot longer to set up.

Hey, so what was the bounty this last time anyway? TMK, AW?

Technically it was $220, a bag of M&M's, and a painting from ESD. Although I only got $200 because I still owed Marley $20 for his hunt.

Speaking of the painting, I've decided what I want painted. I'm just waiting now for someone to send me the picture. I hope painting people isn't a problem?

I think I could do a hunt in November, starting on November 1st possibly, but I'm not sure what to do about a prize. I don't really have any money right now to put towards it and I don't think we can keep asking the same people to keep throwing their money at these hunts. But it does help to motivate people to actually have a worthwhile prize. Any suggestions? Maybe we should do a fundraiser, hehe.

The decks I made probably aren't even legal anymore! I got involved right after the "Antiquities" expansion when I think the "Revised" edition ruled the day. If there are any cards you think you could really use, let me know and I might have them.

    "Black Lotus": Alpha-$400 Beta-$600 Unlimited-$300
    "Ancestral Recall": Alpha-$225 Beta-$225 Unlimited-S150
    "Time Walk": Alpha-$225 Beta- $225 Unlimited-S150
"Mox Emerald, Pearl, Ruby, Jet, and Sapphire"Alpha-$200 Beta-$200 Unlimited-$125

There are a lot of other cards in the $60-$200 price range so I'd look into that. Arabian Nights cards and unopened packs are worth a bunch now. Check out some card sites or talk to me if you want to know if any of your cards are valuable. I don't play Vintage or Type1 (the format that allows cards from any sets with certain cards restricted and banned) since Type II is the most competitive format by far, so I won't be interested in any of them. The game is absolutely huge now, so thats why those older cards are in such high demand and cost so much.

That's cool that you used to play. Ares played a little later than you.

    lol

I know what Reg is gonna do if he gets the medallion reward. That's a lot of money for cards. But I suppose if you like playing the game it's probably worth it.

Unfortunately I got into it just as "Unlimited" was coming to an end, and Arabian Nights was already gone, so I don't have any of the really big dollar ones. I had no idea that they played limiting it to only recent cards these days. I suppose my cards are all basically "Vintage" then. However huge it is now though, I doubt it's as huge as it was in 1993-94.
