2003 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by ares on
Allison Wonderland

Yes, it was found by Regman in Hidden Falls around 8pm tonight. It was in two tealights with the wax removed and then stuck together.

It was in the area by the falls, up at the top of the stairs, in a balcony of sorts that overlooked the falls.

And in what must be a rare if not unique occasion, the treasure was found on the clue that told you what it was hidden in. I may have to wait until tomorrow to post all the explanations though. I'm wiped out from this weekend.

Thanks, Allison, for another fun hunt. Glad to know what the quarter was. That part of that clue just didn't click with me at all.

Congratulations Reggie! Were both parts of the tea light there Reg? Is it just a coincidence that Terry found a tea light too? I'm confused. And what did the quarter refer to Terry?

Terry

It was just a coincidence that I found another tealight...and then tonight someone found another one out there that wasn't the one we found earlier.

The quarter was zone 1 of 4.

Thanks. No wonder I never find any of these things! And what's up with all the tea lights at Hidden Falls? Some kind of ritual?

Sun, 11/09/2003 - 8:15 PM Permalink
Terry

I don't know if it could be a ritual thing - but it is uncanny.

Well, I'm glad the tea light you found wasn't the one. Would have been too much like the ear muffs!

And it's still frustrating that I couldn't find that one again.

Thanks for the hunt AW! That was a park that I didn't know very well outside of THG so I had alot of fun, and now if the PP ever hides it down there I may have a chance at it ;)

Do the clues make more sense to you guys now that the treasure has been found? I'm anxious to see the explanations. To see what I missed and when I missed it. ;)

The first clue about the region using a sent and a quarter, the only park in the guide with 4 regions is Hidden Falls.

Indeed, and it was zone 1 of 4, 1/4, a quarter.

Nice hide! For some reason there were several guys hanging around the parking lot smiling at me; gave me the creeps. Took nothing, left nothing, left alone. TFTC

Funny stuff. I'm glad you posted that warning.

Oh, and I'm sure most of those guys do leave alone. It's the 'friends' they find while they're there that's the reason they go in the first place. I see Ch. 9 is doing a piece on those parks either tonight or sometime soon. Yuk!

I think it's Hidden falls. –ESD, first post after the first clue came out.

I still think it's at Hidden Falls –ESD 1174

Well I still think it's at Hidden Falls –ESD 1198

1. Well since the hunters all came, let’s begin one more game
You should stick to St. Paul parks to make this hunt shorter.
And if it should be your aim, to be in the gallery of fame
You need to locate the region using a scent and a quarter.

Ascent - to climb or rise –TerryV 1172

Hidden Falls has 4 zones, -ESD 1199

The “quarter” referred to the fact that the treasure was hidden in Zone 1 of 4, 1/4, a quarter. Hidden Falls is the only park with 4 zones, so this could have given you both the park, and the zone (or “region”) it was in. Once in Zone 1, an “ascent” [a scent] would take you up the stairs to the “gallery” where the treasure was hidden.

2. There’s no need to drivel, Americans should be civil,
Even if they’ve been known in the past to get cranky.
Look up, don’t shrivel. Pick one side, don’t swivel.
And between the two, it’s best to align with the Yankee.

North as opposed to south. –TerryV 1171

Hidden Falls has two parts, divided into north and south. This clue refers to the American Civil War which was fought between the North and the South. Looking for a park with a distinct North and South could have led you to Hidden Falls. And between the two, the treasure was in the North, just as the Yankees were the North in the Civil War. Also, "Look up" alludes to the fact that the treasure is hidden on high ground.

3. It’s true that fall has now fell, so the weather does tell,
And you’ll see it confirmed by the many bare trees.
But if you want to excel and find where the coin doth dwell
Look for something at a fairly consistent forty-five degrees.

Look for something at a fairly consistent forty-five degrees. it's on a hill. –ESD 1199

This clue refers to the many trees in the park as well as the large winding stairway that led up to the treasure spot. Stairways are usually at about a 45 degree angle.

4. The quirky Aquarius you’ll find all around us.
While the bullish Taurus is always underfoot.
The wandering Sagittarius is encircled thus,
And the stinging Scorpio is nearby at the root.

fire ring (sagittarius encircled), -LL 1263

Aquarius Fixed AIR 11 Uranus –MV -1267

Each of these signs represents a different element. Aquarius is an AIR sign (despite what many people think), just as air is all around us. Taurus is an earth sign as earth is beneath our feet. Sagittarius is a fire sign, and being encircled refers to the nearby fire rings. Scorpio is a water sign referring to the stream nearby and that you could see it’s root [source], the falls, just below the hiding spot.

5. When times were tough, poor men were rough,
And there wasn’t a job anywhere in the land,
We refused to slough. President Roosevelt took a puff,
And came up with a way to lend a helping hand.

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was thus started with Harry Hopkins as the agency head. –Me2 1292

Much of the area of the park around the hiding spot was built up by the WPA during the Roosevelt administration, a program that put poor people to work building public projects. The first letter in each phrase spells out WPA-WPA

6. So you think it’d be neat if I were to give you a street?
And then you say finding the park would be no sweat?
Well get out of your seat, and be fast on your feet,
Because for street clues this is the only one you’ll get.

sweating/jogging/running/marathon/walking -Me2

This doesn’t actually give you a street name. But what one might infer from this being the only street clue is that there is only one street bordering the park to give a clue about, which should narrow it down considerably. It also alludes to the running/biking paths that run alongside the road at the edge of the park.

7. If you arrive after dark, there may be nowhere to park,
But that won’t keep a stout hunter away from the treasure.
Did you overlook your mark before following the arc?
Well then walk down the trail to search at your leisure.

A park that closes off their parking lot at night? –OT 1395

They close phalen and hidden falls too –LL 1407

overlook -which there are 2 - HF and Swede –Me2 1424

This clue refers to the scenic overlook at the top of the park. From there, if you follow the arc of the walking path, there is a trail that leads down a bit to the gallery where the treasure was. It also refers to the fact that the parking lot is gated off at night.

8. There’s a person of fame, or so they could eventually claim
But to you their later career is hardly worth a thing.
To win at this game, you need only guess the name
Of the person who was known at birth as Leslie King.

Gerald Ford, the former president, was originally born Leslie L. King Jr. and then had his name changed when he was 2. The Ford plant is very near the hiding spot.

9. You won’t need to swim, but the hiding spot is dim
So to be sure that this hunt isn’t more than you can handle,
Try not to get grim, but the wick you’ll need to trim
As the most useful thing in finding the treasure is a candle.

This refers to the park being dark at night and the fact that the treasure was hidden in two tealights pressed together.

And I didn't actually write any more clues. If I had, there probably would have been one more specifically mentioning stairs, one naming the park, and one telling you where to look exactly.

I loved the WPA clue- I saw the WA WA but ingenius to hide those P's in there - your awesome as usual :)

and the right person won the candy- Reg ;)

I can't believe anyone left a candle out there and didnt pick it up and keep it- I woulda kept it- I love candles! and funny how OT was going to a candle party during this hunt-I bet AW thought that was too funny---and ironic...

I am gonna start a new thread - Bulletin Board has a name for it- Something you have never heard of, then hear it twice in a 24 hour period. -does anyone recall the name of it?Its a German name like bimenhoffer or something. I have them way to often and would like to record them and what better place? :)

Yes, they usually do that in regards to when two comic strips have the same subject on the same day when there's no real reason why they should (i.e. current event).

I loved the WPA clue- I saw the WA WA but ingenius to hide those P's in there

I was a little surprised that no one caught that, especially since the phrasing was kind of odd.

Actually there wasn't a candle in it, it was just the metal part of a tea light candle, or rather two of them stuck together. It was hidden in some rocks so it wasn't quite in plain site, though I don't think it was too hard to find if you got to that balcony thing.

Well first of all I went out the afternoon of the last clue and searched basically every square inch of that park zone. I am just that way, I can never leave without being sure that I looked everywhere possible. This included what I call the "lower" overlook, the area where I found it. I actually did stumble on the candle holders, but they looked too small. Though it wasn't difficultly hidden, it seemed like something that could get lost amidst all the leaves. I shook it, heard nothing, and went on.

When the clue came out, I was really excited. I still remembered the tea candle holders I found. I decided to go out again. I went along on Terry's quest for the tea candle (still remains a mystery, btw) but I really wanted to go to the creek/firepits area. I was afraid to go there, especially after LL was warned about teenagers trying to overtake cops over there. Once we got there, I looked in "the small cave" as worded by THG, which is more like a large dent in the sandstone wall. I searched that fairly well (for the second time that day), then after about 5 min. of walking I decided to take the stairs up. To my surprise, no one was looking up top. I was surprised I wasn't up there myself, since there are many clues that fit up there better (45, running path, etc) then the area below. I remembered exactly where I replaced the tea candle holders, and it took about 15 sec for me to find it, shake it for the second time that day, and finally open it. I red note flew out of it.

Well thats basically the story. I am still ticked at myslef for being too stupid to open the darn things earlier!

Well I think we're definitely all much more practicd hunters now than most of the others out there. Maybe that will help in the big show.

One other thing I noticed. Reg found the treasure and to the best of my knowledge, I'm pretty sure TMK was NOT in the park at the time. I guess the curse was lifted when he found Marley's treasure (although he was in the park when I found his treasure, but he wasn't looking for it himself).
