Flash Intro-"Geocaching"
6 minute Movie-"Searching for a cache"
Basic Info
- Buy or borrow a Global Positioning System receiver. A basic unit is the Garmin eTrex GPS or Magellan GPS 315. Both cost about $100 and can be found at stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy or online at http://www.amazon.com
- Find a cache near you at <http://www.geocaching.com> Enter a ZIP code and the site will list nearby caches. Select a cache, such as "Geocache by Ray" or "Arboretum One" and click on its "details" button. Write down the cache's coordinates and print out the description. Use the online mapping site link at the bottom of the page to get driving directions to the location.
- While still at home, enter into your GPS receiver the coordinates of the cache as they are listed on the Web site. Coordinates -- such as N 39 degrees 24.661; W degrees 094 14.86 -- describe the latitude and longitude of the site.
- Follow the driving directions until you can drive no closer to the cache and park your car. Follow the arrow on your GPS receiver as it leads you to the cache. Be aware that heavy tree cover can block the GPS signal. Once you leave your car, it could take anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to find the cache.
- The GPS signal will fluctuate once you are within 100 feet of the cache, so from that point on, you're on your own. Check around stumps and under rock and leaf piles. Remember that almost all caches are placed above ground, so no digging!
- Congratulations! You've found the cache. Take an item, leave an item and record your experience in the logbook. Reseal the cache and put it back exactly the way you found it.
When you get home, e-mail the person who hid the cache and let him know you found it. Also, post a description of your experience on the cache's online page at <http://www.geocaching.com>

Wow, I really need a GPS.. too bad I've been buying buttons with my extra cash...
Hey Ian, if I miraculously got to one of your cache sites, could I trade some vulcan buttons for a winter carnival one? Cause I got 4 or 5 of those, and a couple 1976 boreas tokens I don't need. Shoot I'd trade the whole lot of those for the 1972 and the 1969 button in your third cache you posted
hmmmmmmm wasnt the 69 button the last one you got to complete your set Ian? oh no that was the one you gave ME :) I am not selling that one. and thank you again for giving it to me.
I just checked my buttons that are going up on EBay this week - sorry I don't have a 72 or 69 to trade with you.
Does the 76 token have an ice palace on it?
we should have a 'trade zone' set up at the pre-dig for people who wanna get rid of winter carnival items but want other items :)

Joel, how about a trade for all 5? I want the vulcans AND the tokens.
;p
Joel, how about a trade for all 5?
I knew that was coming. ;-)
Hey KC, we could always hook up and do a cache or two if you'd want too.
Cool, sounds like an easy trade to me, in a week or so I'll have some more buttons to trade as well, though I'm thinkin not any vulcans.
Check this auction out and see what I'll be getting, looks like I'll have a few doubles, and a few in there that must be other than the winter carnival buttons themselves.

Oh and CM, that sounds cool, might be good to go with someone that's been to a cache or two, good way to learn the sport. Eventually I will get a GPS, got my eye on a Garmin Rino 110, they're getting more reasonable now.
Hey Ian, you're 3rd Boreas Rex cache is hard to find at dusk. Actually didn't find it yet, I'll be going back out again tomorrow with CM and maybe Reg.
Yeah, what the hell dude? This was the first time I had to leave without finding one. At least we know right where to go tomorrow. I was up and down that damn hill with no luck. I assume it'll be a bit easier in the light tho. ;-)
See ya at 2:30 2morrow KC. Anyone else? It's at Crosby.
It should be easier. Want hints? Don't forget this one:
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=110202
Funny how there were two vans parked right by that one when we went to look for the other one. At least I know where to go anyway.
No hints. We just got there a little late and there wasn't any light. Although the interference with the trees was killing us, I feel confident. Thanks
.... but congrats to KCOGRN, Clue Master and Alibabas

Can that pic go on the cache page? If you prefer not, I understand.
I prefer not.
I did put a few other pix on there though
I don't see it that way. You do because it's your log. I can delete or encrypt because it's my cache.
I logged out, then went to it and there were no options. The links are fine the way they are.
Thanks
Hey Ian, Here's where we were most of the day! Sheesh!
wow- look at all that limestone!
I wish I coulda hung out in the woods with you guys :)
I wish I coulda hung out in the woods with you guys
me2 me2!
Other than Alibabas, you'd prolly be the only girl in those woods.
That place sure did have a lot of in and out traffic going on.
You can take that any way you want I'm sure
Interesting experience for a first time Geocacher. Hoping to get out to some other ones, but I learned a lot this time, biggest point, I shoulda worn boots, and a walking stick mighta helped on all those hills.
Thanks Ian! Hope I find a few more of your caches, still lookin to trade for a good 1969 button.
I have a stick that goes with me whether it's needed or not. It definitely helped there.
Most of my caches are much easierterrain. Watch Target and Best Buy for sales on low-end GPSr's. My eTrex is perfect for me.
I plan on placing 25 or more Boreas Rex caches, each containing buttons. It will be an average of one a day, so it could be three today, and skip a day or two. When the first clue comes out, there will be 25 caches containing buttons. Depending on my stash, I may boost that number to thirty. For some reason Boreas Rex XXX sounds like a porno flick.
Cooler!
hahaha, that'd be cool, I'll have a good chance at some good buttons then. Although during the hunt, I'll be focusing on that, not geocaching, but I'm sure you all understand that ;)
Idea Ian! I haven't set up a cache before so maybe you could do this one. It's an idea I got from when I was in NYC doing cam-caches. How about setting up cam-cache with the ice palace cam? It might be hard to see unless they held their arms up to set them apart from the other black blobs. But it would be cooler because we don't have any cam-caches in St. Paul. Plus the people without a GPS could take part in it too.
Ice Palace Cam
This is a shot I had my wife capture of my bro and I in Times Square. Unfortunately we were at the wrong cam-cache!!
We were right across Broadway from where we were supposed to be. We even ate at TGIF where the actual cam was located right outside our dinner window! ;-(
I thought about that, but a couple problems. It's temporary and there's no zoom. It'd be real tough to identify, so I don't think it'd be approved.
Today's schedule:
Crosby grab the Boreas token ... hehehe ...
Cherokee
Indian Mounds
Raspberry Island (??)
Does Marthaler have woods ?
Tonight at BW3 on Robert Street you can get a couple cache finds and a couple dozen travel bugs:

It's probably from 6:00 to close. If I go it'll probably be somewhere around 8:00-10:00
Lotsa people wanna meet da KING! Ha !
It's OK guys, you're both the kings of your own domain.
This is cooler!
funny- you should have given coordinances to BW3's instead of the address :)
you should have given coordinances to BW3's instead of the address
Yeah, exactly!
good one
Hey Ian, I forgot to ask. Are you interested in the other prince of winds buttons? I have a couple miscellaneous ones.
KC, I just printed out the rest of his Boreas Rex caches if ya wanna hit them up sometime soon. They're all pretty close to one another.
Excellent CM, reg mentioned something to me about Saturday, you guys meeting up then to go geocaching?
you guys meeting up then to go geocaching?
Hard to say. The kid has a dentist appt Saturday at 3 and we need to go shopping for a baptism present for my niece, with whom I'm a Godfather, beforehand. The Baptism is on Sunday. Maybe after 4 on Sat. You game? I'll IM later.
ugliest Godfather I ever seen ;p
Yesterday I re-placed a wet cache at Indian Mounds Park. It's located in a "unique" area. Usually the wet ones are total trash, but the logbook was only damp, and still readable. Six non-geocachers had found it, and left interesting logs. This one I like:
<handdrawn image of the moon>
March 15, 2003
I am here during the lunar eclipse. The silver of the moon is returning. It is a beautiful night. I am resting here on the hill, with my adventure flashlight. I came here tonight to quit smoking. Make a symbolic gesture ...
Then I find it (the cache) here on this sacred hill.(not anywhere near the mounds)
This is where I shall leave the empty pack of cigarettes. ( I won't leave any. Sorry - don't need to tempt others!)
I am not part of the GPS game, but I am thankful for this here, an appropriate tomb.
left - empty cigarette pack
took - animal magnet

This is a local guy who creates/shares software, etc. for geocaching.
That's a great site! All kinds of info. Maps are cool. Damn are you way out there for cache's placed!! Nice way to represent the TC!
How was bw3's?
3 23 oz. amber bocks 3 hours before I went to work. I had a rough day. It was a great time though. Check this out:
The "regulars" wondered about all the "toys" (travel bugs) and "handheld devices"
you should get a sponsor - like Miller Lite (seen in the background of your photo)...on second thought, just what they need is a bunch of drunks wondering the forests looking for stuff. :)
