Nice. On a par with, but much shorter than, National Lampoon's "Bored of the Rings".

Hey Sparky, just the man I wanted to see.

Someone in a movie thread was asking why the eagles didn't just take Frodo to Mordor in the first place. I remember that eagles really dislike contact with humans but that Gandalf was a friend for some reason. (He helped the Great Eagle once or something?)

Details?

because that would have taken all the drama and fun out of the whole journey, obviously!

I think the reasoning would go that the old Big Eye of Evil (aka Sauron) would probably have seen the huge eagles coming approximately 5 jillion miles away, dispatched the flying Nazgul to pluck the hobbits off their backs, and been doing the Happy Evil Dance in Barad-dur while the rest of Middle Earth settled down into an eternity of darkness. (A note: I was not, however, privy to the Council of Elrond at Rivendell, nor did I sneak in like some scamps when not invited - so I could not accurately report as fact that this idea was rejected by the council.)

As to Gandalf, he was familiar with the Great Eagles from at least the time of the Battle of Five Armies (in the Hobbit) when they swooped down and saved the good guys behinds. Oooh, even earlier in the Hobbit, Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves were trapped up in burning trees by Orcs, and the Eagles came and swooped them all away to their Eyrie.
Then the head Eagle(Gwahir) found Gandalf on the tower of Orthanc when he was imprisoned by Saruman-the-I-used-to-be-good-and-White-but-got-seduced-by-the-dark-side-and-now-delusionally-call-myself-"of many colours". Radagast the Brown (another worthy but lesser wizard of the order) who is familiar with all manner of wildlife had put out the word at Gandalf's request (outside of Bree, before the Hobbits had arrived, being delayed in the Old Forrest) to have the animals of the Wild bring any news to Gandalf at Orthanc.
The great Eagle also spied Gandalf lying on the top of a shattered mountain (I believe Carradhras). Gandalf had just finished fighting a balrog to the death and being reborn as Gandalf the White. The Eagle bore him a second time down to warmer climes.
After the last battle before the gates of Mordor when the Eagles chipped in to try to turn the tide, Gandalf summoned down old Gwahir and asked him to go get Frodo and Sam. (with a couple of his speedy cousins, Landroval and Mendeval I think)
That's about all I can recall off the top of my head. What was the question again? Oh yeah - yes, Gandalf did know the Eagles before the end.
As to disliking humans, I think they saw little reason to get involved with the silly old humans. Probably because they were always hitching rides on their backs instead of inventing airplanes. They knew and liked the Elves, in the Eldar Days - but that's a whole nother book.

I would guess the Eagles were just sick and tired of doing Gandalf's dirty work by this point.

Ah, nope. They changed out my box yesterday, and I can send alright but apparently am not receiving. You can switch over to my excite account if you want. I'll try to chase the bugs out. Now where did I put that SilliconRaid...

How often do you get a new computer? Every 6 months??

Sparky

heh. I wish. No, this is the hand-me-down that is replacing the temporary one the nice IT guy loaned me until the hand-me-down was ready when my old box blew up. Clear as mud?

So far, it works, and I'm not complaining - much. Wish I could get e-mail on my outlook though.

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in the overall performance, particularly in the

flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5. and then installed

undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0, NHL 4.3, MLB 3.0, and NBA 3.6.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems,to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed,

Desperate

Reply from the Technical Side :-

Dear Desperate:

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while husband 1.0 is an Operating System.

Try to enter the command: C:/ITHOUGHTYOULOVEDME" to download Tears 6.2, which should automatically install Guilt 3.0.

If that application works as designed Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. BUT remember, overuse of the above application can cause

Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. WARNING: Beer 6.1 is a very nasty program that will create Snoring Loudly.

CAUTION: Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 or reinstall another Boyfriend program. These are not supported applications and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.

You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance.

I personally recommend Hot Food 3.0 and Lingerie 7.7.

Good Luck,

Tech Support

Um, dude... I would lay even money that you would have a copy of Shrek even if you were still childless. The size of the child doesn't matter, you know. Hee. That's a compliment, if you like.

I'll take it in the spirit it was intended.

So as I'm on the bus today, I realize I never brushed my teeth this morning! EW! So I go to the store here in the building. They have floss. They have toothpaste. But, they don't have any toothbrushes. Nice. So I bought mints and gum, and I'll try not to smile at anybody. Hee.

OK, so we finalized our iteniary for our trip next month. Arrive in London on the 12th. We'll stay in London at the Craven Garden Hotel, which is right outside Kensington gardens.

Then on Monday, we'll travel north by train to Edinburgh, Scotland. While there, we'll be staying at Hotel Belford. We'll spend two days in Edinburgh. While there, I hope to see the Royal Yacht Brittania.

Then on Wednesday the 18th, we'll board another train and head for Dublin, Ireland. While there, we'll be staying at Camden Court Hotel. And while in Dublin, we'll be visiting the holy grail of beer: The Guinness Storehouse.

Sat, 01/24/2004 - 10:50 AM Permalink

From there, we'll board another train on the 20th back to London. We'll spend the weekend in London and fly back home on Sunday the 23rd.

Whoa! My turn to be officially envious! Sounds like a hoot and a half. Lots of train travel too - did you get a private car? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge - I've heard the rolling motion of the train, etc. is conducive.

I'm unsure what the privacy factor of the train will be. I don't think we get a berth, since it's only a 6 hour train ride to Edinburgh, and only 4 to Dublin.

Maybe they have private bathrooms...
