Spring is just around the corner people!!
Whoohoo! a few more months and that ice block will be small enough to break up and use in some ice tea on those hot summer months :)
So do you think that someone's had enough of winter fun yet?
We should place bets on when it melts to nothing. Which direction does your porch face?
Address JOE
Which direction does your porch face?
It faces East but it's protected by the Southern sun so that's why I put it there to begin with. That snow pile that you see in the background is always the last snow in the neighborhood in Spring.
I saved that 1st palace ice chunk that one of the builders gave me back when it was first going up. Who knows how long until da wife takes it out of the freezer and tries to put it in one of her Bacardi-Cokes. ;-)

That's a great pic.
Someday she'll appreciate it!
:-)
wonder what they're gonna do with those cement archways... make the sandcastle a walk through too?
Anyone know if they hauld the tops (those metal/fabric spires) off to the junkyard? I'm still kinda amazed they destroyed those, woulda made interesting tents or whatnot...
That's a great pic.
Someday she'll appreciate it!
Thanks THX. Yeah, she didn't want to go see that palace come down either, but couldn't stop talking about it afterwards.
Thanks to all of you who complement our pix on this thread. We're glad you can make it over here to check them out.

Ditto
It could last until April in that case.
Yeah, I'd be curious on what that actual date would be that it melts to nothing. The cement that it's on will prolly help it melt a little faster but not much.
Any guesses?
off to work now
I'm guessing.... Middle of May
Thanks much to all the picture takers. I wanted to go so badly yesterday, but couldn't take the time.
I'm picking my date now just to have first dibs....
April 15th...its a bad day for many(not me) ...so maybe I can win something....
:)
lol long as no one cheats and replaces the ice block with an ice cube to fit their time better ;)
one 70 degree day in march can really screw up my time line....
http://climate.umn.edu/doc/ice_out/ice_out_status_03.htm
last years Ice out...so I'm going to change my date to March 25
I'll pick April 15th. We'll see if the ice block melts before my taxes are due.
We've had ice on the east side of the house until May some years.
I like that one, except what's with the plow?
I'd rather they replaced the plow with a canoe, or a boat, that or else stick the snowflake on one of the other designs...
Yeah I don't get the plow... I know we got tons of farmers... but I don't really associate MN with "crop cultivation"
but the snowflake, classic minnesota, it's one of the first things I get from out of state people "Is it cold there?"
yes .. Snow, canoe, loons hell even a moose....not a plow.
If there's going to be a plow on the coin, it better be attached to the front of a pickup truck.
I like the 4th one and then the 2nd one. However, I am with you, there should be a way to incorporate snow into whatever design is picked. I guess the 5th design the state described to the mint was mostly a snowflake. The mint rejected it for being too pedestrian.
I like #2 but with the loon from #1 and maybe two small overlapping snow flakes where the Twin Cities are on the state.
What's special about Minnesota compared to other states?
We don't have more snow than others do but we are colder than the rest except Alaska (but Duluth has the record for the city with the lowest average mean temp) so an icicle might be more appropriate. Maybe hanging from the arrowhead region of the state. The loon, the motto, the fisherman, and the lake woods are perfect. It just needs to show cold somewhere.
Thanks for posting OTS. I assume those are the finalists?
interesting article on the strib too, we might have the first state coin that uses a "incused" image (sounds like a reverse strike, something more embedded in the quarter than above the surface).
I also liked the sound of the image that was disqualified, and found it amusing that the final design gets approved by the U.S. Treasury Secretary, John W. Snow (you think with a name like that, he'd like the idea of a snowflake on our quarter).
sounds like a reverse strike
Those guys in the boat on #4 look liked they were stuck in reverse already.
By the way, Who are the guys in the boat on the license plate, Oh yeah, I'd really like to know.
U.S. Treasury Secretary, John W. Snow
For funny
NP CM.. I was just cruzing the news and spotted them figured we might wanna toss em around in here.
BTW, where did they dump the left over blocks from the palace?
I thought it was where they dump the downtown snow by the river. The news said that it was going to be guarded so no one could take any blocks. Yeah right! They're gonna pay some schmuck to watch frozen water so it isn't stolen. I want a recall.
BTW, where did they dump the left over blocks from the palace?
from the article I read on PP, down by the excel energy plant along the river front, in a fenced off area, guarded 24 hours a day. They obviously don't want people picking up ice blocks.....
I drove down that way.... I didn't see any ICE or Guards....Maybe i'll go back over that for my lunch.
BTW, where were the guards with guns when these guys wer gettin souveniers anyways?
I'll just slip em a cup of Joe.....
Wouldn't Joe get mad?
About them quarters....
I voted for the mississippi headwaters one...
I wish they would just have one with a big ass loon on it... kinda like what the MN State Lottery has.... a loon sitting in some water..
http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/7994646.htm
Anyone who has shoveled snow, slogged through the stuff on highways or delighted in the powder as it falls knows that Minnesota snowflakes are not "frivolous."
But according to the deputy chief counsel of the U.S. Treasury Department, a single snowflake is too "frivolous or inappropriate" to appear on the Minnesota quarter in 2005....
The four designs now head back to Mint officials, who will make final changes to the four. U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow will give final approval to the designs; Gov. Tim Pawlenty has until May 15 to pick from the four choices.
What? A snowflake is frivolous? The guy giving final approval is named Snow! John Snow!
Dumbasses!
Where are the hockey sticks!
I'm not too excited about the plow....(i have a big agro background and a lot of friends that are farming or in the industry) but I think better to promote tourism (free ad) and farming is not it!!!!
now why didn't I think of that!
I didn't until you put yours up lol
LOL!!
the plow came from the Minnesota state seal- but their idea on the coin is extrememly a poor one!
I like #2 with the state and fishermen and loon.
placing snowflakes for the twincities would have been great.
Also note: For years there have been some people who are trying to change the state seal due to the rifle and the indian -shows 'being protective and indian hostility"
WHATEVER!
Also note: people have also been trying to change our state flag. Because it looks to intricate? I happen to love it. I have always been on the lookout for an original MN flag not a new one. so if anyone has one thats 50 plus yrs old let me know :)
I, too, love the Minnesota flag as it is!
