Here's me and a friend tangled at one of our German jumps

Kitch, it's not just about the levels you see on your modem. It's also about the levels on the "plant" as we call it. Your node where you live is looking pretty clean. When I have more time at work i'll show you some of that Comcast tech crap. Get you some screen shots of the spectrum and such so you can see what I'm talking about. Sounds blah but it's pretty cool.

You guys sound like the geek version of Top Gun.

I feel the need. The need, for speed!

damn straight i do!

hmmm. for what it would cost me to run a t-1 from apple valley to visi and get service across it, i could add phone lines, put dsl on them all and have the speed equivalent of about 7 t-1's...... 10 megabits coming into the house.....woo and hoo.

Does speed matter?

Oh Geez! If you have to ask...

He came over and played on my PC and saw how fast it was.

He called the next day to get cable installed.

Once you try high speed, you can't do with out it.

I'd kill myself if I had to use 56K.

and to think...i might go back...

heck i had it at 5.95 a month on the 56k....but going to be hard to go back...after my 3 months of $23 month....

maybe i can get comcast to stay at the $23 month...or tell my wife to change jobs....

It'd be pretty hard for me to go back now that I've got a cable modem, have had one now for.... 3 years. Yes, 56K would be very hard.

I first got cable access years ago when I lived out in Blaine. They didn't have DSL out there yet. It was weird in that upstream was through the phoneline. So my modem was hooked up to the cable and to the telephone.

I think when I got it, they had only had full uplink/downlink running for a year or so... I still remember the tech that at the time roadrunner sent out to install it. Kept asking him if he'd just hook the thing up to my router, but no, can't do that, he thought it wouldn't work anyways. 5 minutes after he left, I called the cable company back to say "yeah I installed a new network card in my computer... can you change the MAC address for me?" This was of course before the firmware update that allowed my linksys router to spoof the MAC address.

I bid on and won mine at a silent auction. Paid $100 for one year. After that I couldn't go back.

Larry Seltzer - eWEEK

Security vendor Zone Labs has disclosed that several versions of its personal-firewall products are vulnerable to a buffer-overflow attack that could compromise the system.

ZoneAlarm, ZoneAlarm Plus and ZoneAlarm Pro 4.0.0 versions; ZoneAlarm Pro 4.5.0; as well as Zone Labs Integrity Client 4.0.0 are vulnerable, the company said. Versions earlier than 4.0.0 are not. ZoneAlarm users are advised to upgrade to Version 4.5.538.001. (See the Zone Labs advisory for more details and how to obtain the upgrades.

That's normal. Mine can go from 1.5MB to 3.5MB. Usually it hangs right around 2.5MB.

Kitch, your node has a real clean noise floor. There is some low end ingress but nothing that is impeading your nodes service. Looking good :).

lol didn't know a better way to ask the question...

Fri, 02/20/2004 - 11:39 PM Permalink

KC0GRN has a node thats paired with another node at the receiver. So what you see here is a view of both nodes. Little mess down on the forward side but the return path looks great.

cool, so why is that one paired? older one perhaps?

KC's got a pair? He must if he's asking OTS to take pics of his node.

Thank you, thank you! Now I can go to bed. You've stumped me with the bonus question KC.

Fri, 02/20/2004 - 11:43 PM Permalink
OTiS

I could explain the structure but it would be easier to explain to you all in person then on here.

To answer your paired question... other then the Shoreview, Roseville and IGH hubs.. all nodes are paired at the receivers. It's a cost saving deal.... dosesn't hinder service. If anything the only downfall is when i'm trying to troubleshoot I have to dig deeper.

I have that 3 for $99 deal with Comcast which ends up having internet cost $42. You need to have their digital cable ($29) and phone ($28) too though. But all are still cheaper than having them separate
