Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the world's tallest mountain from base to peak!
but if you go by sea level Mauna Kea is thrown out.....
then you have to consider.....
is it from the base of the mtn. or is it from sea level?.....
hehehe

"Mountains are generally measured from sea level, in which case Mount Everest (29,028 feet; 8,848 meters) is king."

"Hawaii's Mauna Kea, though, rises an astonishing 33,476 feet (10,203 meters) from the depths of the Pacific Ocean floor. Measuring from base to peak, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on earth."

"A third way to determine the world's highest mountain is to measure the distance from the center of the earth to the peak. Using this method, Chimborazo in the Andes triumphs. Although it stands but 20,561 feet (6,267 meters) above sea level, its peak is the farthest from the earth's center. "

I'm going to assume that the riddle writer based his riddle on the mountain that has traditionally been referred to as "The highest mountain in the world".

37- 13 pairs. She could technically pull out 6 black left-handed gloves first, then 6 brown left-handed gloves. The 13th glove would give her a matching pair

38- Both kids row across. One kid rows back. Mom rows across. One kid rows back. Both kids row across. One kid rows back. Dad rows across. One kid rows back. Both kids row across.

39- you can't take pictures with hair curlers

40- Mount Everest has always been the tallest mountain, whether it were discovered or not. It didn't just magically appear.

41- 6 cigars. Make 5 cigars, smoke them. Then take the 5 cigar butts to make one last cigar to smoke.

Seems I should wake up before answering these. Hehehehe

But I did go to see how close I was about the highest mountain thing from the way I first read it. Interesting stuff here... http://www.ecuadorial.com/mclimbing.htm

And part of the article are these two paragraphs about Chimborazo.

Chimborazo, the country’s highest peak and at 6,310 m (20,697 ft) — trivia buffs get your pens out — the farthest point from the Earth’s center (due to the bulge at the equator). Until Mount Everest was discovered and measured, it was thought Chimborazo was the highest mountain in the world. In the nineteenth century, Humboldt climbed it, writing afterwards that the ascent ranked among one the most spiritual moments of his life. Even Bolívar had a go, but his ascent, like his dream of a Gran Colombia, failed. The first summit was made by the intrepid British climber, Edward Whymper, in 1880.

Approaching Riobamba, Chimborazo appears gargantuan: the extinct volcano is up to 20 km (12.5 miles) wide at its base alone. As with Cotopaxi, you can drive up to its breath-inhibiting refuge at 4,800 m (15,744 ft), within a fauna reserve peopled by shy vicuña.

It will be interesting to see the answer to that one, Terry. According to that article, the answer should be Chimborazo.

OT - I now know that correct answer is Mt. Everest. It's how the question is laid out.

I went somewhere else with it. It was wrong, but I thought it fun to find out from how I first read that question if I was anywhere near correct.

Always fun to add to your knowledge base!

The way it is written, it looks more like a geography question than a riddle. If it was indeed a geography question, I like your answer. :)

I had a teacher in 5th grade who was a geography nut. I hated it at the time. Now I'm glad that I at least know a few things...like where continents are located in relation to other land masses, what general direction one would go to reach a certain state or country, stuff like that.

And it can come in good for Trivia.

37. Cathy has six pairs of black gloves and six pairs of brown gloves in her drawer. In complete darkness, how many gloves must she take from the drawer in order to be sure to get a pair that match? Think carefully!!

Answer: She could possibly take out 6 black left hand gloves and then 6 brown left hand gloves, the next one would have to be either the right hand or left hand match.

38. Mom, Dad, and 2 kids have come to a river, and they find a boat. It is small and can only carry one adult or 2 kids at a time. Both kids are good rowers, but how can the whole family reach the other side of the river?

Answer: The kids row across. One comes back. An adult goes over, and the kid comes back. Both kids row across again, and one comes back. The other adult rows across and the kid comes back. Both kids row across again

39. Why can't you take a picture of a Indian woman with hair curlers?

Answer: You can't take a picture with hair curlers you need a camera!

40. Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the tallest mountain in the world?

Answer: Mount Everest has always been the tallest mountain, even before being discovered!

I know you guys were noodling this one to death so heres some info. An interesting rebuttal on this answer: Everyone knows that Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, right? Well, if you want to get technical about it, the answer is NO. Mount Everest stands 29,028 feet tall. From top to bottom, it's taller than any other mountain-whose bottom is the surface of the earth. Here's the catch: If you add what's underneath, then Mount Everest isn't the tallest mountain. The winner then is Mauna Kea, a huge, very tall volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii (called Hawaii). Mauna Kea stretches 13,796 above water and 19,680 underwater, for a total of 33,476! So if you say that it's the whole mountain that counts, then Mauna Kea is the tallest. For one, Mount Everest is only the tallest mountain above sea level. While we mention that Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from the bottom of the sea, making it the tallest mountain from the base to the peak. But we have to mention Mount Chimborazo in the Andes of Ecuador. Mount Chimborazo is the tallest mountain from the center of the earth. Since Mount Chimborazo is on the equator, it is boosted much higher from the core. In terms of from sea level, Mount Everest is 8,848 meters and Mount Chimborazo is only 6,267 meters. But in terms of from the core of the earth, Mount Chimborazo is 6,384,404 meters and Mount Everest is only 6,381,670. This makes the peak of Mount Chimborazo 2,734 meters higher than the peak of Mount Everest.

41. Because cigars cannot be entirely smoked, a hobo who collects cigar butts can make a cigar to smoke out of every 5 butts that he finds. Today, he has collected 25 cigar butts. How many cigars will he be able to smoke?

Answer: 6, he makes 5 originals from the 25 butts he found, and after he smokes them he has 5 butts left for another cigar.

I think you hit all of them except 46 & 49 KC. I want to say 46 is because 1,898 is more than 1,897 of them and thinking 49 is 4. You can grab any 4 socks and it's bound to make a pair.

I'd love to do a speed round on these things since that's how my mind works anyway. Common AW, lets see some clues like this again. ;-)

actually, folks, a pound of feathers does not weigh the same as a pound of gold. gold is weighed using troy ounces and pounds, feathers are weighed using avoirdupois ounces and pounds. 1 troy pound is 5760 grains, 1 avoirdupois pound is 7000 grains. so the pound of feathers weighs 21.5% more than the pound of gold.
