HAY, 'HEADS!!! :D

Would'a been around more BUT...

Just by a fluke, I found out who my paternal great-grandfather was! I didn't know anything beyond my paternal grandfather because a) my father died when I was seven; b) *his* father died the following year I was eight; c) never thought to ask my mother about my paternal roots because she remarried when I was like nine and they adopted me.

But back in 1993 I took back my *birth* name after a life change as I DID NOT want anything to do with my adopted father. Thought my original birth certificate was lost to me, since the two adopters are dead (Mom in 1985; her husband in 2001) and both their permissions are needed to open the sealed court records o'my adoption.

HOWEVER, found out my paternal lineage Wed and called the county I was born in yesterday and all I need to do is send a letter with the pertinents to them and they'll check into the sealed record and see if it can be opened. Was told it shouldn't bee too difficult to get done!!! So starting on that.

ENKNEEWEIGH... I'm SO XCITED I'm ABOUT ABOUT TO POP!!! Have traced my roots back to approx 1570 in England!!! And while I don't think I had folks on the Mayflower, my one ancestor got here a litter after 1620 - when the Mayflower came over - and HIS GREAT GRANDSON was in the Reveloutionary War...

AND I CAN NOW JOIN DAR!!!!!!!!!!!! Have already found a woman who's grandfather and my great-grandfather were brothers and she's a DAR!!!! So, that means I CAN BEE!!!!!! And I've not determined yet if my line or not, but one o'the lines is related to Chittenden, who was like the famous gov of Vermont. And, sadly, after 14 generations - some 396 years - I'm the last o'my line. An only child with no male sibs to carry on the name. Not that my line's all that great and needs to be carried on... But... Oh, heck. No big deal. At least the name and very close divergent lines do continue.

So, that's what I'm up to these days! Noodling all this GREAT history stuff and finding out who I am!!!!!!!!!!

Can't believe my ancestors weren't on the very last boat docking at Ellis Island!!!

Good gods, but this is SO FASCINATING!!! I've got DNA that was fighting about tea!!!!!!!!!!!

ITTIZ FINALLY HAPPENED!!! I'M MY OWN BESTEST FAVORITEST ARTIFACT!!!!!!!!

Wow! That's some pretty heady stuff! I'm only second and third generation American. I wish my family roots went back farther in the New World.

GREEN---that is sooo cooler...someday you are going to have to show me all the tricks for finding that cool info....I'm kinda the same way with my dad...since he doesn't talk about it much (have begged) all I know is this on his side....
His Dad left "ran away" when he was like 4 or 5....his mom then told him to go by her maddien name...she remarried shortly after....then she died...he grew up with step dad....he died...the he grew up with new step mom.....anyways after he join the airforce..he cut off all ties to the messed up step mom/dad kinda thing....

But I'm interested in his "real" dad even if he ran away.....I want to know if i got ANY 1st cousins...since his "real" dad might have had a new family... what a mess........

someday I know I will find out....

anyways GREEN...that is sooo cool!!!!! NICE JOB AND GREAT NOODLEWork.

Isn't it cooler, G'Goldie! I'm the 10th generation to be born here.

Now, I *do* have to verify all this info I found as what I've found so far is off The 'Net. I mean, some o'those folks may have names and dates and all wrong.

But once the woman who's grandfather was my great-grandfather's brother contacts me, I can pretty much use her info. Though, who's to say she's got all her facts correct either? So, I'll prolly end up re-verifying everything just because I want to be sure about the long ago past.

And I've nothing better to do and ittiz THE NEATEST noodling in the world!

With your history, G'Oldie, the good news there is you get so much great European info. Where, for me, I can't get like squat. Or it will be like pulling hen's teeth. And they're not going to be like hardly even related to me enknee more, you know?

Kitch, I've hung out at the family name forum at genforum.com for like about 10 years - always wondering if I was related to any o'those folks. The one woman that's the most prolific poster/most knowledgeable about the name is the VERY WOMAN who's related to me!!!!

I'd done searches on my dad and his dad for years - nada, zip, zilch, goose egg.

But Wed - and I don't even know what possesed me... Oh! A DNA article on MNBC about Billy The Kid (of all things!) - I did a search for my father... AND THERE HE WAS!!!

The info had only been added LAST SEPTEMBER!!!

Will be glad to help you do whatever, to the best o'my ability! :D

A couple of months ago, out of the blue, I got a phone call from a guy who said he thought we might be related. After visiting with him on the phone for almost an hour, it turns out that his Grandfather and my Great grandfather were brothers! I don't know as much about my father's side of the family and he's done some work on it so it was pretty exciting. We're going to meet and bring along documents and pictures that we have from each others branch of the family.

WOW, G'OLDIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! You'll HAVE to tell us all about it!!!!

Kitch, get a copy o'your birth certificate. Once you've got that in hand you've the legal means to get copies of birth certificates of both folks listed on there...

But given what you've said... Don't be surprised if you find some surprises on your birth certificate. Contact me for other ideas... kind'a personal stuff.

And you know, don't you, your father's birthdate? Right?

You've already gots quite a bit o'info to start you off!!! :D

cool...i got all that...

That's funny. But it happens. My children swear that my oldest sister must really be my mother because she has always bossed me around and tried to tell me how to live my life. And she is old enough, but it's just a silly story they like to tell. But one of her daughters looks just like me!

Do you have "all that" as in hand? Or as understood? Do you have a copy of your dad's BC?

If so, get a copy of the marriage certificate o'the two people on there - your grandfather and grandmother.

Then get copies o'THEIR birth certificates!

Capice?

I had THE WEIRDEST thang happen to me...

Contacted county I was born in and they tell me I've two records listed. COOLER! I'm thinking one was the sealed adoption one, which would have made everything way super easy.

Not a chance! It was sumbuddy ELSE, born same month/year - different date, different parents - and it was ATTACHED TO MY RECORD!!!

Told them to get it off there as it was NOT me!!!!

Kind'a scarey... Very weird.

Sounds like you've been busy, Green. Hope everything comes together and you get all that verified.

I have relatives in Belgium from my Dad's side of the family, but that's about all I know. I know my Mom's Mom's family were French Canadians and my Mom's Dad's family were Swedish and Danish. I know that one of my great, greats grandfather was scalped during the Sioux Uprising and his wife took her kids and hid in a hay loft until the danger was past.

My mother did our geneology, but nothing has been updated in over a decade...I have intentions of fixing that.

My mother's father decscended from the King of Sweden (Charles XIV, a contemporary of Napoleon's), although on the wrong side of the blanket (apparently quite common in those days). Been told many times, twice by strangers, that my son Mags bears a great resemblance.
