Relax, don't worry, have a homebrew.

Submitted by Frosti on

Any homebrewers out there? Let us know what's currently fermenting in the pot.

Mother's in the kitchen washing out the jugs,
Sister's in the pantry bottling the suds,
Father's in the cellar mixin' up the hops,
Johnny's on the front porch watchin' for the cops.

Um, I guess it all depends on how ya pack it. These guys did it, why can't we?

The Chat has seen many innovations. One of the first was the on-line tasting, the first of which took place on December 9, 1996. The tastings led to innovations of their own, such as the "toob" the near indestructible PVC shipping tube that neatly accommodates two bottles of beer in near-bullet-proof safety. "The toob is so tough, that it could survive re-entry from orbit," said the toob's inventor, Zymie, inventor of the world's most sophisticated RIMS system, IGOR. On-line tastings also evolved into the BOMBED Club-within-a-club. 12 members of the BRC (mostly guys from the day shift) decided to exchange beers with each other, one brewer a month over the course of a year—"Beer of the Month Buddies Exchanging Drink". The semi-legal exchange of beers via UPS, FED EX and (gasp) the U.S. Postal Service also led to the to the first ever in the history of the world, on-line brew competition. Using American Homebrewer Association guidelines and certified beer judges, the event was organized by Skotrat. There were 31 entries into the competition, and the judging was watched by many members as it happened on Skot's webcam. Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 1997 was the day which will live in infamy as the day the world's first online tasting took place.

I brewed the "Tongue Splitter" tonight. I picked up the kit from Northern Brewer awhile back. Here's the description from the box:

In the years since we started brewing our own, American pale ales have evolved from a nontraditional offshoot of English pale ales into a style all their own as well as a distinctive celebration of our homegrown beer culture. This kit is our take on the West Coast Pale Ale; it is similar to our Extra Pale Ale but is more aggresively (some might say insanely) hopped. Engineered to be an alpha-acid delivery vehicle, this kit is sure to please lovers of the humulus lupus and freak out squares.

I love a good pale ale, so I hope this one doesn't disappoint. It's got just a wee bit o' hops in it:

.5 lbs. Dingemans Caramel Pils
.5 lbs. Simpsons Caramalt
6 lbs. Pale Malt Syrup
1 oz. Nugget hops
1 oz. Kent Goldings hops
1 oz. Cascade hops
.5 oz. Centennial hops
.5 oz. Crystal hops

My first potential alcohol reading on the hydrometer was 5%. I've never given the hydrometer a serious try so I'm flying blind there. We'll see what happens in a few weeks!

I recommended the "hazed and infused" to some folks at the liquor store the other day. Whee! also tried a bottle conditioned IPA from a brewery I can't remember the name of just now (darn memory is the first to go). It was just excellent! I was influencing a younger friend of mine in his taste in beer. MGD is not the way to go, I told him, here try this Porter! and this IPA! It's supposed to have taste, boy!

As an indicator of how much I miss good beer, I found a can of Murphy's Irish Stout in the market yesterday and nearly peed myself I was so happy.

Yep, late May/early June.

Do alert the better microbrews to increase production.

And maybe I'll get some of Frosti's homebrew finally.
