This is strictly for non-political, fun conversation. It's alot easier to discuss things with someone when you realize you have some common interests, fishing, music etc. Besides, lets face it, politics gets old sometimes too :) Enjoy, Please, NO flaming, name calling etc. Have some fun!
If you get started and stay with it for awhile, there's a good chance that no other kind of fishing will interest you anymore.
I've heard that too, Rick. Fly fishermen are a world unto themselves and I admire the thought and effort that goes into it.
It always looks to me like you would get tangled up in your line;)
Happens all the time.
But sometimes things come together.
Twenty three inch brown caught on the Beaverhead River, on a fly half the size of the nail on my little finger.
Sweet that would make it wort all the work.
Hey, Rick, is that you with the fish?
Yeah, that's me.
Cool pic Rick. I definately have to give it a whirl. The closest I came to that type of fishing was river fishing for salmon up in Alaska. I bet that brown gave you a good whirl. I did catch a cutthroat trout years ago when I was hiking out in Colorado. After 5 days of dehydrated food it was the best meal I've ever had.
I'm exhibiting a simple, unrefined taste, here, but I find most of that dehydrated backpacking food to be pretty good. Maybe it's just the setting.
I used to have an editor who said I'd eat anything that didn't crawl off the plate.
Ever had any MRE's ? Some aren't really that bad.
I've eaten C Rations covering the National Guard on maneuvers. Tasted like solid protein.
You would probably like the MRE's. Some are quite tasty. Well, not after 4 week of nothing but them. C-rat's were nasty. I had some made in the 50's I beleive, yuk.
That's a nice lookin' fish, Rick.
OK, Thread name change. See above description. This is strictly for fun and discussing hobbies, what you saw on T.V last night, music etc. Please refrain from political labels etc. In short, have fun damnit!
but political labeling is fun, damnit!
I know, but like I said, sometimes talking about common interests etc. can lead to more civil conversations when it is political. It's not kumbaya, hug me or anything. I just think it's good to take a break from politics etc and talk about other stuff
I'm going to Salt Lake City (biggest Cow Town in America) next week. I'm taking a day off to fish the Provo River with some guys.
'Built This City' Tops Worst Songs List
NEW YORK (AP) -- Starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever.
Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.
The list, which appears in the May issue, includes songs by New Kids on the Block, Meat Loaf, The Doors, Lionel Richie, Hammer and The Beach Boys, among others.
Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."
Starship lead singer Grace Slick says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc."

Man, that sounds nice. When it rained the other day that was the most wet my boat has been in almost 2 years. :(
I'd trust Beavis and Butthead before that magazine. They know what sucks and what doesn't.
I don't know much about "Blender" magazine. I'd agree that that song sucks, but I don't think it was the worst ever. No "Muskrat Love" ?
I broke down and bought a new desktop PC.
Good for you, J.T. -- tell us more.
didja get one of these?
THX is not a Mac person;)
Good for you, J.T. -- tell us more.
I got a refurbed HP Pavillion for $585 W/shipping.
2.6GHZ P4, 120G HD, 512MB RAM, 64MB Video, DVD/CD burner, memory card reader, front & back USB 2.0 & Firewire.
I like it.
I was burning some pictures to CD on my old PC on Sunday, and it took forever. It was ticking me off, so I finally broke down and got a new one.
My old PC is like 5 years old.
I gave it to the kids, and they think it's great compared to the 9 year old one that they had.
:-)
didja get one of these?
You know, someone here at work was selling a mac for $150. I almost bought it just because. Trouble is, it was already sold by the time I asked about it.
I was aware of that. Just trying to upgrade his "I like it" to "I love it"
I know that you know I was just ribbing THX
I have a four-year-old Dell PC we got for $100 in addition to a couple Macs. I set up a wireless network between the three of them that works pretty slick now.
I will most likely need to pick up a PC when I start web designing for cash, so I can see how the designs look on both systems.
That's a good idea.
I'd give Mac a try if I could get one cheap.
I'm so ignorant about them though, that I wouldn't know if I was getting a deal or not.
at $799 to start, the eMac is a really good deal when it comes to Macs.

IMHO that seems like too much for 1.25GHZ, 256MB Ram, 167MHZ bus, 40G HD, 32MB Video.
It's not ALL ABOUT PRICE, despite what Wal-Mart teaches.
That's the old saying: Americans know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
I know it's not all about price.
But I got twice as much of a PC for less money.
comparing PC architechture to G4s is a little tricky...you need to dould the number to get comparable performance.
so think of it as a 2.5 Hz in PC terms.
is okay for 333 MHz DDR. Memory isn't very expensive though.
again, the G4 architechture with it's velocity engine and Quartz extreme make this seem less than you expect from a PC.
another 40 G is another $50
running of Quartz Extreme.
and don't forget it includes a nice 17" flat-panel CRT.
for a Mac, it's a good deal.
twice as much?
2.6 P4 is roughly the same as a 1.25 G4, if that.
what sort of software did you get?
and what sort of video memory running with what type of card?
the important thing is that you like what you got and it does what you want it for.

That's what I've heard. Like I said, I'm kind of ignorant.

256 is probably enough for me anyway, at least for now. I don't much that is that memorty intensive.

Huh? Speak english please. :-)
another 40 G is another $50
My last pc had 12G. 80 would probably be enough for now, but I'd probably want to go higher.
running of Quartz Extreme.
Once again, I don't know exactly what that means. Although I have heard that you can't really compare a Mac to a PC in the terms I've listed.
and don't forget it includes a nice 17" flat-panel CRT.
That's true. I'd have to add another $350 for a flat panel. Which would bring me to over $950. BUT, how much can you upgrade that Mac you posted? I upgraded my old PC's a lot. That's how I made them last 5-10 years. New video cards, CPU's, PCI cards...
what sort of software did you get?
Just standard crap. Nothing too exciting.
and what sort of video memory running with what type of card?
I got a 64MB 8X Nvidia AGP. I believe it's DDR memory, but I'd have to check.
you will be glad you have the 120. Mine has 13.5, but an external 120 drive took care of that problem....only thing is, now I want another one.
actually no. it's just a CRT which isn't an LCD. It's the flat panel LCDs that are expensive. I should have said flat-screen CRT (it's the iMacs that have the floating panels). A good flat-screen CRT is about half that.
this is where things get interesting...one of the points that PC people like to make is that there is a lot more software available. The only thing is, if it's crap, who cares? You might get a bit exited with how easy and fun the iLife programs (iPhoto, iTune, iMovie, iDVD) work and work together...not to mention GarageBand. The thing about Mac software is that it works, it's easy to use and you spend less time messing around and more time actually using it. What's your time worth?
how much did that cost?
I've used my 400MHz G3 iMac since I got it in 1999, and besides adding some memory, I have had no need or desire to upgrade anything on it. Only now that Apple has released an entirely new OS (which runs fine on my machine) have I even begun to consider a new machine. And I've never had to fix anything either. I don't think about it as "being able to upgrade it", I think in terms of "having to upgrade it"...and Macs generally don't require upgrading as much.
All that said, if it does what you want, keeps doing what you want and you like it, it's a good computer.
sounds like you got a pretty good deal.
Now that I have a Mac I will never go back to a PC unless I need it for checking web design or something.
The only thing is, if it's crap, who cares?
Exactly. I hardly use the software that actually comes with the PC. Plus, what they do give you, is usually a basic version, which needs to be upgraded if you want to use all the capabilities.
how much did that cost?
Not a lot really. Much less than buying a new PC. Everything I got, I got on sale cheap. You can find a lot of good deals online. Plus, I simply like cracking the case open and playing around in there.
I don't think about it as "being able to upgrade it", I think in terms of "having to upgrade it"
I didn't "have to upgrade". It's more that I wanted to, and want the option of doing it if I want to.
All that said, if it does what you want, keeps doing what you want and you like it, it's a good computer.
Well, it's not my dream PC, but I wouldn't spend the kind of money my dream PC would require.
It's like my buddy that is on his 3rd PC. He always buys top of the line, so they cost him about $3,000 every time he buys one. If he would wait six months, he could have the same computer for half the price.
then the eMac/iMac isn't for you.
you'd want to look at the PowerMacs G4s and G5s....
a PowerMac G5 to be specific. $1800 to start, $2500 to start with duel processors. And 3 grand for the dual 2 GHz bad boy...the fastest personal computer in the world right now.
Ooooh, firewire 800 even!
I've actually read/heard about the G5.
Looks like a sweet machine.
if you max out the G5 with ALL the goodies without making it a server (dual 23" Cinema displays, 8GB memory, dual 250 GB hard drives, Airport extreme w/ a base, Bluetooth, FInal Cut and Keynote software installed, iSight, THX speakers, mac.com account and Applecare) you come up with a grand total of....
$14,178.90
I'll have to check my lotter ticket.
We have one of those machines that Crabs is talking about at work. They spent a lot on it for dealing with the catalogs. They justified the cost by comparing what it cost us to have someone outside do the work. Looks like a plasma television sitting on the desktop. Kind of cool.
Personally, I grew up with DOS and Windows so that is what I know a little about. I am sure that it wouldn't take much to learn Mac, but there is the fear factor involved for both me and the family. What I have seen is that Windows is what is most used in the workplaces, so that is what we have to teach our children. That may be why Windows is so popular.
