This is strictly for non-political, fun conversation. It's alot easier to discuss things with someone when you realize you have some common interests, fishing, music etc. Besides, lets face it, politics gets old sometimes too :) Enjoy, Please, NO flaming, name calling etc. Have some fun!
Noodling isn't hard. Carp & catfish are stupid.
The do it all the time down South, legal or not.
Carp can be tough to catch. Actually, they are fast becoming a pretty popular game fish.
In fly fishing circles, carp is all the talk. Hook them, and they run like a bonefish.
Actually, they are fast becoming a pretty popular game fish.
They're fun to catch. They put up a pretty good fight. They're just not anything I'd like to eat.
Some people like them though.
I've had smoked carp and it wasn't bad.
Did you roll it or put it in a pipe?
Ate it.
Hey, Crabs:
Just downloaded on iTunes the soundtrack from the movie Ascenseur pour L'echafaudfrom 1989 by Miles Davis. Don't know the details about the movie, but if you like Miles Davis at his icybest, it's worth the $11.99.
Pour yourself a glass of cellar-temperature Bordeaux and listen to four cuts, all called Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees.
Makes you want to start smoking harsh, unfiltered cigarettes.
Ahhh the good old days when healthy meant a salad with your steak :)
Amazing that I ever drank or smoked at all considering my first smoke was a camel straight and my first beer a pfiefer,,,,yuck. Well took care of one but I still enjoy a beer once and a while, like a little wine too or a brandy or scotch in the winter. A good cigar once and a while is o.k too. My great gramps was 93 when he died and he had one glass of scotch a night, just one finger of scotch and a cigar everynight.
If you really want to confuse and intimidate people, you say: It's not the notes that Miles Davis plays that are important. It's the notes he doesn't play.
dude, I own a COMPLETE collection of Miles Davis recordings...and yes, Lift To The Scaffold is one of my favorites. The Louis Malle film it's the soundtrack to is pretty good as well, Early example of good "film noir"
Take 3 became the track "Générique" in the film and track 4 was the "master" take for that title. I like Take 1 best though. One of the best examples of what some have referred to as "the sound of a man walking on eggshells".
If you have the four takes of Nuit Sur Les Champs-Élysées, then that is the sessions that they made the soundtrack from, but did you also get the soundtrack itself, which is tracks from the session treated with a heavy echo effect?
anyway, good choice, it's among my favorite of all his recordings.

I'm seeking it out this weekend.
it's the spaces.
I have maybe of dozen or more differet versions of him playing "So What" from the Kind Of Blue album. Listening to them chronological is interesting because the opening two note phrase that is the basis of the entire composition sorta changes over time. The more he played it, the less he would actually play it. It got to the point where he would just play one of the notes, knowing that it would suggest the second note even if he didn't play it at all. One is so familiar with the opening from KoB that your ears just automatically fill in the rest. He could find a space inside of just two notes!
"it's the spaces."
He was a genius at phrasing.
The remastered version of KoB has two versions of "Flamenco Sketches."
the alternate version was first available in the 4-CD Columbia box set "The Columbia Years 1955-1985"
It features a young Jeanne Moreau, one of my favorite actresses. You might have seen her as Nikita's "beauty tutor" in the original "La Femme Nikita"
I'm hitting the sack,. But on iTunes you can download single pieces of the soundtrack for 99 cents if there's gaps in your collection
another fun Miles Soundtrack to Check out is "The Hot Spot". It's a forgettable Don Johnson film, but the soundtrack pairs Miles with John Lee Hooker. And if you want to see Miles himself acting (although he's basically playing a very thinly veiled version of himself), the film "Dingo" is worth a look.
trust me, any gaps in my collection aren't going to be on iTunes.
I've actually been working for quite a few years on assembling a "complete sessions" on MP3s. The things I need are quite rare at this point.
BTW, speaking of iTunes, they have been featuring free downloads of a different song every day this week. Yesterday was one from Jane's Addiction, today was some crap from Counting Crows...wonder what tomorrow will be.
The French called him "Charlo"
James Lileks, one of the Net's biggest bloggers (and, I think, a neighbor of mine), wrote a nice little piece about Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights," and the introductions to the movie that he had in German an French.
I don't have City Lights in my collection, just Modern Times and The Gold Rush. But they're the kind of movies you can watch when the world seems too crazy. My wife watched them both the evening of 9/11 when I was about 8,000 miles away.
I like Lileks.
I just started getting into Chaplan, I watched a PBS festival on him at least I think it was PBS but I was amazed at how he could get the point across very well without a word. I was amazed at his expressivness and how downright funny he could be. Not to mention the physical aspects of what he did, I wonder how many times he injured himself doing what he did. Seems he had a dark personal side but he was good at what he did.
I also still like watching Laurel and Hardy and the Stooges once and a while for a good escape. I've never met a woman who "got" the stooges. Perhaps it's a guy thing.
If it's a guy thing, it doesn't say much for guys.
That's a JOKE, okay? :^D
The Three Stooges humor is too broad and dopey for me. I think a lot of it was produced on the fly.
Chaplin's gags are crafted. You can find the same approach to humor in Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd.
Harold Lloyd was the best! I don't think I've ever laughed so much as when I first saw his bit on the clock tower.
James Lileks I like him he is a Regular on the Hugh Hewitt Show on 1280am.
He could cut that Bleat column in half every day and say pretty much everything he needs to say.
I'm sure his daughter's a sweet kid, but does he have to write about her every day? I hit the click as soon as I see the word Gnat.
I know from experience it's tough to keep the writing mill churning day in and day out, but I know the man has other things on his mind. So let's see them.

Kinda cool. Yet I can't help think maybe some things, no matter how great just can't be done again. I used to love AB. Somehow though I think this classic was better off to go into Americana history and leave it at that.
I'm with you, Rob. It would be fun if they could recreate it, but if it's today's music, I wonder how hard they'd have to look to find something that isn't rap and that has relatively clean lyrics. Much less CLEAR lyrics!
The New Bandstand, all Britney & Jessica, all the time.
Forget it.
That would be cruel and unusual punishment.
I actually believe it or not saw a video on MTV the other day, I know it's hard to beleive and I couldn't believe it either. Of course it was a crappy rap video but a video nonetheless.
Happy Memorial day everyone.
May God keep them and bless those who paid the ultimate price and are forever in time remain a 21 year old LCpl. Who never got to get married have children or live out a long rich life. May they rest easy and know they won't ever be forgotten.
Hey Luv!
What you doing up so late?
I can't find the thread, so I'll post it here:
You'd think some rich guy with esophageal cancer could find someone better than me to handle his finances.
Dear Friend,
As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for
Me, because, I believe everyone will die someday.
My name is BATES ALAN a merchant in Dubai, in the
U.A.E.I has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
It has defiled all forms of medical treatment,
I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.
I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I
Never really cared for anyone (not even myself) but my
Business. Though I am very rich, I was never
Generous, I was always hostile to people and only
Focused on my business as that was the only thing I
Cared for, but now I know better.
I believe when God gives me a second chance to come
To this world I would live my life a different way
From how I have lived it. Now that God has called
Me, I have willed and given most of my property
And assets to my immediate and extended family
Members as well as a few close friends.
I want God to be merciful to me; I have decided to give alms to charity
Organizations, as I want this to be one of the last
Good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed
Money to some charity organizations in the U.A.E,
Algeria and Malaysia. Now that my health has
Deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself
Anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one
Of my accounts and distribute the money which I have
There to charity organization in Bulgaria and
Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to
Themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as
They seem not to be contended with what I have left
For them.
The last of my money which no one knows of is the
Huge cash deposit of eighteen million dollars
$18, 000, 000, 00 that I have with a finance/Security Company
Abroad. I will want you to help me collect this deposit
And dispatched it to charity organizations.
Reward is 20%.
God bless you.
BATES Alan
Speaking of...
I always think of my Grandfather on Memorial day.
Man, I miss my Gramps.
Anyone know where I can find an old Hamm's beer bar sign for our den?
Spent part of last week on a lake that looked like a Hamm's beer sign. Deep and clear. The guy at the resort said he made a sight reading, and at 45 feet, he could still see the bottom.
Before that we did some back country camping. Saw two people and a dog in four days. Camped on a remote lake. In the evenings it was dead quiet and the bird cries echoed so clearly it felt like we were indoors. The loons and swans cried all night. Most people think of that sweet, distant warble when they think of loons. But they also make eerie sounds, old as time. Hearing it at 3 in the morning, when there's no one else for miles around sends a chill up your spine.
Sounds nice, Where did you go ?
Re: The Hamms beer sign I could have easily hooked you up last year. My Wife's Grandfather passed away and he worked at Hamms for 40 years and had a ton of stuff. Her aunts sold most of it to some guy who buys Hamms memorobilia. He has signs all over town. I'll see if I can get the number for you. I still love hearing that jingle. "From the land of sky blue waters.(echo) waters.........
We camped at Itasca, which is a big park. Getting to the campsite was a hike of more than four miles. We stayed in a cabin on Bad Medicine Lake.
I'm looking for the Scene a rama signs. But around the Internet, they sell for about $800. That's too much to pay.
I'll see what I can come up with for you. :)
Try E-bay.
I love Itasca.
You city slickers are funny.
There was a dead rat on the sidewalk by my house today.
It might have been thrown from a passing car.
A couple guys did that to my wife and I as we walked down a street in Miami. We moved from that city without jobs or prospects.
You've been hexed, dude. I don't know who you pissed off, but I don't feel comfortable being this close to you.
You need to find a Santaria priest. That's gonna be tough in Minnesota.
Whatever it is, I hope there is/was only one.
One is probably all it takes for the hex.
Who did the song. "Put a spell on you" ?
that would be Screaming Jay Hawkins
it got covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival too.
