In Asia, Buddhists will offer gifts to dead ancesters by burning objects. They can purchase crude replicas of cars and television sets and whatnot.
I don't think there are many who actually think that by burning them they're sending their grandmother a television. I think it's just a way to honor their ancesters. Maybe grandma liked watching Wheel of Fortune.
jethro, a question, and I'm really not doing this to bait you, I promise.
Do you consider any other religions to be "superstition"? Hinduism, for example, where cows are sacred, or various forms of animism, ancestor worship or naturism? Any polytheistic belief system?
right along with you've never seen anyone kiss a cross (inclusive of jewelry) for luck.
You know what I have seen and what I haven't? Now I may have seen, although I can't say for sure, some one kiss a cross in some TV program but I tell you I have not seen it done in life.
of course it is...you think you are talking to a supernatural being. Just becuase you believe in God does not mean praying is superstitious. It is apparent you, too, know nothing about it. But of course you insist that you do.
I don't harbor any hostility towards religious people. I would just like to know what justification and evidence they have for believing fairy tales and pixie dust.
People who believe in something that is philospohically unjustified are ignorant in those beliefs. They use no logical dispositions to justify their claim. My wonder is mostly based in, why do you believe so wholeheartedly in something you can't prove or have no evidence for?
That is not prima facie hostile, it seems to me you want it to be.
what I don't get is how someone can say they believe that if someone else doesn't believe the same thing they believe, their very soul is condemned to hell....and then accuse the other of being "hostile" toward their religion...and do it with a straight face. I mean, how much more hostile can something be than eternal damnation in a lake of fire?
You must not know any people
You must not know any people
that has to be one of the silliest statements these boards have seen.
right along with you've never seen anyone kiss a cross (inclusive of jewelry) for luck.
I think it's just a gesture of faith though.

I have, and it's for luck.
superstitions=communion, praying, no meat on Fridays
count that Rosery...how many times exactly?
count that Rosery...how many times exactly?
I am not Catholic. I wouldn't know.
Only Catholics pray?
praying isn't superstitious. i see you don't know anything about it.
of course it is...you think you are talking to a supernatural being.
Most people pray because they think it will change their fortunes.
bodine prays for my death...and yet I'm still here.
of course it is...you think you are talking to a supernatural being. Just becuase you believe in God does not mean praying is superstitious. It is apparent you, too, know nothing about it. But of course you insist that you do.
it's a silly superstition and has no real affect on anything, that's why you are still here
Most people pray because they think it will change their fortunes.
I don't know what most people do and you don't either. But those that pray for better fortune have missed the boat.
What about people that pray to the deceased loved ones?
those who pray at all fell off the wagon
religion is another drug
he's gonna cover us up with leaves and a blanket from the moon
bodine prays for my death...and yet I'm still here.
I have never prayed for your death, crabs. The rest is more nonsense.
uh...huh?
it's a silly superstition and has no real affect on anything, that's why you are still here
Could you make any less sense?
he missed a word, he obviously meant don't believe
praying is a silly superstition, and has no affect on the real world. That is why your praying for Crab's death is unsuccessful
That is why your praying for Crab's death is unsuccessful
I haven't prayed for his death.
Sure you haven't. It doesn't change the fact that praying is a silly superstition, along with all those silly dogmatic laws
"Sure you haven't. It doesn't change the fact that praying is a silly superstition, along with all those silly dogmatic laws "
Why do you care?
Why do you harbor hostility for religious people?
I don't harbor any hostility towards religious people. I would just like to know what justification and evidence they have for believing fairy tales and pixie dust.
Why do they need to justify anything to you?
"I would just like to know what justification and evidence they have for believing fairy tales and pixie dust."
That's hostile in its face. And your intent is crystal clear.
People who believe in something that is philospohically unjustified are ignorant in those beliefs. They use no logical dispositions to justify their claim. My wonder is mostly based in, why do you believe so wholeheartedly in something you can't prove or have no evidence for?

They have a rare gift.
Why do some people have an ear for music, or a natural talent for art?
Got an answer?
you're equating belief with artistic talent?
Flawed, in every epistimological way possible
Faith is hard to explain.
because it's wrong
What it's not is logical.
illogical=wrong
Sometimes the only choice you have is illogical.
logic is as constant as mathematics. If you argument and reasoning can't stand up to logical scurtiny, it is flawed, and therefore, wrong.
of course you have.
what I don't get is how someone can say they believe that if someone else doesn't believe the same thing they believe, their very soul is condemned to hell....and then accuse the other of being "hostile" toward their religion...and do it with a straight face. I mean, how much more hostile can something be than eternal damnation in a lake of fire?
"If you argument and reasoning can't stand up to logical scurtiny, it is flawed, and therefore, wrong"
So you have limited the breadth of knowledge and understanding to what can be calculated?
Why? Is that logical?
.
an argument cannot be sound, i.e., have a truth value, if it is first not valid. If it can't stand up to simple logical scrutiny, it is invalid.
I have not experienced a valid and sound argument from anyone have ever come across when it comes to religion.
: I mean, how much more hostile can something be than eternal damnation in a lake of fire? "
Maybe that's slightly more hostile than you. But that doesn't make you any less hostile.
"I have not experienced a valid and sound argument from anyone have ever come across when it comes to religion."
Maybe that's your problem.
No, it is yours more than mine.
After all, what is any propostion without justification?
eternal damnation in the lake of fire?
I don't recall ever so much as making any threats to anyone, much less about their religion...and you think I'm the hostile one?
"After all, what is any propostion without justification? "
Faith
religion is nothing more than an ancient policeman
Faith
an interesting concept to be sure, but once again, there is no knowledge that proves faith true.
"I don't recall ever so much as making any threats to anyone, much less about their religion...and you think I'm the hostile one?"
Well, you're not the only one.
