1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Jack, I'm with you, Vegas is where the treasure is at. 80 degrees, warmth, no snow, and plenty of casinos. I bet I could find a treasure chest out there.

WE4, someone said it's not in the directory of parks, but you can call AT&T and they can give you the address. Don't know anything else on that park.

Leah Logan I am with ya, I still think it is in Newell, they gave it away when the said there is value as well in the new.

I think the first two lines are telling us how the medallion is hidden Round and white and stretched quite tight Is the covered quarry you seek I read the covered

quarry as refering to the actual medallion and that it is in something round and white.

The last time it was in PHALEN was in 83 i was there. your right about Maplewood not wanting it in their city but the park is so big and there is a big part of it in St

Paul. LOOK inthe southwest part of the Park that is ST. PAUL

Mr. Matthews, How's the band? ;) Could it be in something like a baseball?

I think today's clue leads to either the State Cpitool Grounds or to Como. The quarry covering could be the capitol or Como Conservatory? Any thoughts on either

of these places?

Yes - the Water Cooler was here last year - about 7500 total entries ffor the entire hunt, 1997 was the first Water Cooler year - about 450 total entries!!!

McKinnis, Yep, it's been here at least two years, but the vol has increased exponentially.

Is Triangle Park also known as Dawson Park? It shows up on my map at Lexington and Otto, but I drove past there, and there's nothing I can find. wo thoughts: Is

it a new park? It looks rather undeveloped. (...reference to 'new')Or, is it simply a poorly labled public park, which may be an enticing place to hide a treasure.

On my map, it shows up at the bottom of the bluff, just west of Lex, south of otto. At the top of the bluff, it looks like it starts where Highland Pkwy peters out.

There's some sort of community house at the top of the bluff, with a religious-sounding name (Jewish?), located where it looks like the park should start ('iconoclast'

green - maybe it's located near this?)

Socrates95 - Not a bad guess - I was thinking along the lines of softball - didn't think baseball would be big enough - but neither of those really 'stretch'

is there a winterpark in stpaul.

Don't you think it's odd that the Pioneer Press hasn't run ONE story on the Treasure Hunt. Usually they have a story about it every day!! For having it worth $10K

and little publicity - except for KARE 11 saying it's in Como - I think it's strange. They didn't even want the past winners riding in the parade this year!!! Probably

they didn't want to hear the complaints - or else couldn't afford new sweatshirts!!!

Ya know, if the writer of these clues is looking at all the posted messages, he/she is probably laughing his/her butt off because of all the different connections

everyone is making. I can only imagine how far off we are from what the clues really mean!! So I figure there is one of two things we're doing wrong. We're either

breaking these clues down WAY too much and getting stuff out of it that really isn't true(if so we are going to kick ourselves when this is over with), or we aren't

breaking it down enough(if that's the case then whomever is writing these clues is going to have to tone it down within the next few days or it won't be found anytime

soon.)

Dave & Socrates: Round and white could also describe the half-round skylights at Hilcrest rec center - a location with a hill, ball fields, on the Ford Parkway.... no

golf, though.

Has the medallion ever been in the same park two years in a row?

Nobody hopes more than this former east side guy that it's at Phalen, but let me clear up 2 glaring misconceptions once and for all:

1. The treasure has been hidden at Phalen 3 times in the past. (1958, 1973, and 1983) Check your history page if you don't believe me.

2. Most of Phalen is within the St. Paul boundaries. However, the "best" hiding spots are on the west side of the lake, north of Larpentuer, which would put it into

Maplewood. (who, true, have no sense of fun or adventure when it comes ot this hunt.) I prediced Phalen in 1999 on this very board last year. We'll see if I;m right,

but right now, I don;t think so.

mckinnis - they are referring to Como Park as Winter Park during the carnival - why - what is the connection

Helmut - know you are talking my park - tell me more. My gut feel is that it is at Hilcrest - here is the golf course deal - there is a hilcrest golf course but it is NOT

located at the park.

Well I think at this rate, the less we know the better. Right now we are starting to make connections where there aren't any just because one thing fits. Even though it

seems like these clues are telling us something, it really isn't telling us much of anything! DAMN THIS IS ANNOYING!!!

tooo am from the east side and love the idea that it is PHALEN. been along time. davidn LOOK back at about 10:20am this morning I started telling

I was thinking Hillcrest in the beginning- hockey rink, soccer field, the library and school are right there- and it sits on a large hill- the golf course is only a few blocks

away!!

Attention Dave Matthews: Even though the north and west ends of Phalen are in Maplewood, it is still in Ramsey County, which makes it fair ground to look in.

Hey everbody, The Peoples Champion is back.!!!!!!!!!!!!! Today I'm going to Trangle Park, and I'll be looking for the Medallion.!!DAMNIT! Triangle Park is a

reallp small park, about 5 miles or so awaY from Como. It has a really small statue in it, and some huge rocks, and a small sign right in the middle of it that says

Triangle Park. aND IT HAS MORE WRITTEN ON IT, BUT IT'S REALLY FADED OUT!!!!!!!!! I'm not going to say anymore, I was writtig to one of my

friends, and it turns out that all of you pieces of TRAILOR park trash, want to know!

Okay- I think it is at the State Capitol Grounds because- 1)studying the past and value in the new = the MN history center is a fairly new building. 2)There was a

biblical passage on the Peace Officers Memorial from Matthew 5:9 (I can't find a four.) 3)The man of fame is Jesse. (Also on John Ireland Blvd) 4)Tome = one

volume of a set. 50 state capitols 5)Trees line the edges. 6)Iconoclast = There are many military memorials 7)Round and White = captiol dome 8)covered quarry =

the capitol itself Not too hard to figure out but not too easy either. Any thoughts?

also from Hillcrest you can see the highland park water towers - round and white!

Part2--you never know with the clues, but my past hunting experiecne tells me it is too early in the game to be analyzing street names. Those type of clues usually

don';t hit until clue 10 0r 11. (And yes, I know I[;m supposed to think like an iconoclast, but it's STILL too early for those obvious tyupe clues.)

Nonetheless, I will probably check out that part of Phalen this p.m. What will you be wearing?

Also, will someone please tell me more about this Hillcrest park--is that a little dinky park just west of Highland golf course?

how does iconoclast refer to military memorials? I think the covered quarry refers to the medallion itself

Sun, 01/31/1999 - 10:58 AM Permalink

Dave Matthews - i can relate all the clues to Hilcrest, except #4. It is a newer rec center, but?... the old part I can't tie in.

I drove out there this morning, and there are some good vibes there. There are 3 ball fields, (home, clue #6), a hockey rink *on* a ball field (goal, #5, although all

the rec cneters, including Linwood put their ice on their ball fields...), there are some yong-ish trees planted in straight lines, the library, Ford Parkway, the sledding

hill located some distance from the ballfileds.

I agree with those who say that becoming an iconoclast means finding the medallion inside of something with a little bit of symbolic value. Would ripping open a

softball to get at the medallion count as destroying a religious icon? Maybe to some...
