I'm driving up past Hayward on Saturday.  It should still be pretty most of the way up.  At least the weather is supposed to be nice.

should be a lot warmer than last weekend!

Oddly enough, the best fall shot I got on my trip was off the back of a speeding train coming out of one of the tunnels in the cascades (not THE tunnel, but one of the shorter ones).

Fantastic Shot KC!!!  You must have used a low exposure setting for that blur effect. A picture that shows movement is always cool since, by nature, the picture itself is always stationary. You could PS the shot to get a close effect but you can always tell effects from the real thing. Nice job.

Fun pictures yourself 3M.  Having a wife that would even get on a wheeler is cool in itself let alone go mud boggin with you.

im confused.... so . what is "THE" tunnel, then?

My mom and my step-dad, are on their way up to Itasca for the week, as I type this.... I'll post some of their pictures whenever I see them.

THE tunnel is actually called the "Cascade Tunnel" it's one of the longest rail tunnels in the US, just over 8 miles long, goes under a mountain in the Cascade mountain range.

Actually the exposure setting was automatic, the blur effect was actually real, due to the speed of the train I was on coming out of the tunnel. The amazing part was the fact the tunnel entrance remained in focus!

:) Thanks. Once in a great while I get a neat shot. Wish I coulda gotten a nice shot of the fog that was out there, it didn't rain the whole time I was there, but it was very foggy.

Having a wife that would even get on a wheeler is cool in itself let alone go mud boggin with you.

After I bought mine she "made me" go out and buy one for her and the trailer to haul them. I'm a lucky guy I guess!

Went up north to Hinkley today and visited my Aunt. The colors are just beautiful once you get past Forest Lake.

Perfect!  I'll be heading up in two days.  Originally we were going to go up last weekend but ended up moving my daughters into their house.  So it worked out after all.  With any luck at all we'll see the cranberry harvest.  That's usually the beginning of October.  If we do I'll be sure to take pictures.  If you haven't seen that, you're really missing something.  The red berries floating on the water with the turning leaves and bright blue sky.  A photographers dream.  BYW.....drove down the Kaposia ravine today and there are some pretty trees.  Lots of bright orange and red.

I went through the National Wildlife Refuge in Burnsville today.  I'll post some pics later.  Lots of yellow in the trees, but not much red or orange yet.

Speaking of yellow trees, this one was taken on the side of my house.  The yellows are almost fluorescent this year.

Wow. I gotta get out there with my camera. I'm lookin to get a very nice fall shot in, as I was inspired tonight by a creative matting job done on a photograph at a co-workers house. They took a photo, mounted it to a mat, then did the 45 degree angle cut (as you see on most mats) in a rectangle, essentially choping out the center of the photo, then they added another mat piece with a slightly smalled rectangle cut behind it, and replaced the center behind that.

Anyways it's tough to describe, but I was impressed with the final product and since my sister works at a framing shop, I was hoping she could do a similar effect to a photo for me.

Gotcha bra.  We're planning on a picnic trip up to Taylors Falls tomorrow (today).  That overlook at the dam is sure to be hopping this weekend.  I'll post some pix later if the weather cooperates.

CM.  Have you ever gone to Taylors Falls via Osceola?  Not sure if that's the right spelling, but you can walk down some stairs right off of main street to the bottom of a waterfall.  It should be lovely today.  We take that little detour on our trip up north.

I would have stayed longer but the other day when I went up to Hinckley, clearing brush off my 40 acres, I inadvertantly scratched my eye. Sun light hurts like a son of a yoo hoo right now. Really sucks. I play hookie from work to get a nice weekend and end up staying in the dark with a scratched eye. Just hope it's better by sunday night when I go back. I told them I had a cold.

Sorry to hear of your scratched eye 3M. That sux big time.  I love your power lines photo.  There's something about it where some group could use it for their cause on their brochure.  I have the same other pix that you posted. We must have been taking the same route as the other million people today.  I'm just glad I was going north through TF instead of coming down 95 heading south. Sheesh!  Those people had to be waiting at least 2 hours just to get through town.  Stillwater wasn't too bad. Only about 45 minutes.  I guess it really doesn't matter since that's what we're there to do anyway.

We drove up through Taylors Falls today too.  Went up to Bayfield County where we own property and I took some pictures I'll have my daughter post here for me.  We put 350 miles on the car today and I'm beat.

Any word on OT's famous church by that ravine in... south saint paul? I was down at spring lake park today, colors aren't too great there, guess I shoulda headed north rather than south.

BTW any opinions on best times of day to shoot fall colors? dawn, miday, sunset?

I was thinkin sunset, but haven't seen a lot of sunset autumn shots. Just seems to me if you could get a good setup, it'd be a nice time of day for it.

I think that the sunlight about 1/2 an hour before sunset is pretty faboo for picture taking in general.  But it's a really short window of opportunity this time of year.

KC.....the ravine is on 19th Avenue just south of Butler Ave and there are some spectacular oranges and reds right now.  The church is in Inver Grove Heights on Upper 55th between Babcock and Robert St.  I haven't checked that out yet.  Might drive past today.

Highway 53 between Minong and Spooner was beautiful yesterday.  There are lots of small lakes along that stretch and the reflections were perfect.  I just didn't dare pull over to take any pictures.  The speed limit along there is 65 mph and wouldn't have felt safe, especially with a four year old in the car.  There's a county road outside of Hayward where the trees meet overhead, and it was like driving through a gold and red cathedral.  Very pretty.

I'm not sure how one gets so tired just sitting in a car most of the day, but I slept for 10 hours last night!

Was out in Stillwater today. Some nice colors. And one very crazy Hot Air Balloon pilot. They were ridin so close to the water, then hit the burner just before the bridge. Good thing there was the gap there, they squeezed through.

These were both zoomed crops so the quality isn't the greatest.  I took video when both were closer so I missed the closups with the camera. But you get the gist.

This was taken right behind that small church on 55th st.  I took some of the church but the trees still aren't quite there.  The Kaposia ravine was awesome tho.

That's what I'm talking about!  I love the reflection picture!  You did it much better than I could have, CM.  When I was shooting my pics up north I kept thinking that they were going to look very amateurish compared to yours. 

nice balloon pic KC. I like Cm's reflection too. Theres a couple of the boat/cars around that I see out there a lot. I sure haven't seen many gondola's though...

Don't be so hard on yourself and post your pix already.  The trick to reflection shots are to take them when your foreground is already shaded and the background is lit.  As you see I was a little late getting there because you can see the shadows from the tops of a few trees on the shore line across the lake.  I actually didn't want to post it and wait until I can get a better shot but being that I work at that time of day it would be impossible until next Saturday.  The leaves will probably be all changed or down by then.  One windy day and winter is here.

There were people yelling out to him asking about rides and he was yelling back times he was open. It seemed like he was based right down there somewhere.  I couldn't see any advertising on the side of the boat tho. But apparently he's been down there for years.

Oh, and great shot KC!  Where did you get that view?  Was it just along that street up top or was there an actual lookout?

The view is from Pioneer Park. Linky is the virtual cache I nabbed up there. Great view of the river valley and bridge, not as great a view of main street as the south side of the bluffs.
