I don't think it's the turf. In fact most say it's waaaaay better than the old crap in the metrodump. Bennet got hurt at winter park on grass. He could hurt himself in a padded room wrapped in bubble wrap wearing a helmet. Chewing gum is dangerous for him.
Boy was that close! I was pretty worried during that last quarter. But we pulled off another one plus I won $50 with the #2 of all things! Poor Texas, lost in both baseball and football today. ;-)
Our d isn't where we want it to be, but I think you have to give it more credit. We're missing 2 of our 3 linebackers, as well as one of our cornerbacks. They've had to play through that, needing guys to step up to contribute. Learning a new defense also affects things. They're still out there learning the defense and adjusting to it. The more comfortable they are with it, the less thinking they'll do and the more plays they'll make. I think the injuries on offense hurts them too. If we had our whole offensive arsenal, we'd probably have more points and longer drives. Things like that would only seem to help our defense. The biggest thing is we won a game in a hostile environment on the road after losing a big lead.
I blame the Texans comeback on Cotrell. We were agressive and had done well all game. Suddenly Cotrell goes back to the "bend but don't break" soft zone we had seen the previous 3 games. It was a prevent defense with a whole quarter to play. I have never liked and never will like a prevent defense. It only prevents winning as they say. Also though, the Texan recievers made some mind blowing catches and Carr found his rythym. He's the #4 rated passer in the NFL. The D sucked it up and a W is a W, They have to improve allot. but I'll take 3-1.
Yeah, I agree. That was a coin toss. That wasn't a win. Our momentum was zilch in the 4th quarter and most of the 5th with the exception of one real play that gave us the game. They had a few games like that last year with different results. Nothing worse than resting on a comfortable lead and blowing it in the end.
This is the same kind of D we have seen for years. It is not a coaching problem it is a player problem. We have a good D line (I for one am losing faith in Hovan). A decent secondary, we need LB's.
It's not like at the end of the year they say well, you'd qualify for the playoffs but that wasn't really a win so Detroit gets in. It is a W. They won on the road. They could have folded completly but didn't. The D came up when they had to in the end. Now that being said I have a huge problem with the way Cotrell has this bend but don't break attitude. He's so worried about giving up the big plays that they end up giving them an 8 yard per play average. That didn't happen in the first half and then they went to trying to protect a lead. Which is the best way to lose one. the prevent D is a joke. Hovan did a little better with the threat of being benched. Perhaps it will motivate him. I think he's overrated and he's nowhere near where he should be (or the q.b). I'd rather see Scott in there. He's hungry.
True L2F. And we'll take it. It's no different than saying we should have won that such and such game. It's just talk and personal feelings in your own book. Of course it's a win. And that's what counts in the end. It'll all be forgotten about before the next game anyway.
(or the q.b).
Exactly. I felt like it was like Madden talking about Farve for a few minutes there. Pepper doesn't need to be built up too far. It's a long way to fall after a crucial fumble. He has stats on both sides of the coin. If he continues to do his job, we'll be alright.
He's (Pep) has been solid. Extremly good in fact. The D is suspect but in fairness to Cotrell our LB corp is depleted with injuries not to mention CB's. It takes a while to get guys gelling. I just wish we could be more agressive with blitzing and get rid of that stupid soft zone.
Realistically though you have to have to work on the basics and fundamentals first before you can get into the more advanced stuff. If our guys don't know their assignments well enough or can't cover guys enough, we're totally screwed if the other team picks up our blitz. I remember coaching defense for seventh graders. They wanted to blitz a lot early, and I let them at first. We would give up a lot of big plays though. I scaled things back though, went to just a base defense, and we got a lot better. Later on in the year I let them blitz a bit more once they got the hang of things. I think you need to build up, starting with a solid core of basics. Then branch out.
12:00 left in the game and is it me or is this the best game so far this year? They brought back the big plays again. It's about time! Despite his two turnovers (which always suck) Culpepper is kicking ass and this Moore dude is awesome. It's nice to see that we finally have a running game. And even with Moss out, we still have a passing game. I just hope we can hang on.
Yeah, it's kinda sad that they seem to take the game off when our offense is rocking but they at least try and step up when it starts to get close. They should play every quarter like it's the 4th. I don't see anything wrong with out scoring a team by 35 points. We don't necessarily need these "oh shit, here we go again" types of games when they should have been blowouts.
Tice might bring him back for the first play and use him as a decoy then sit him out retaining his record starts stat. But coaches usually don't care about that kind of stuff so who knows?
Looks to me like he will see limited duty for the next 2 weeks. I expect him to get in on goal line situations. In that area it's more hands then legs. It will all depend on how well Moss feels. I do not think this team will put him in a situation where he will be out longer then a couple of weeks by making it worse.
Besides, Robinson, Kelly and Buerlison can handle the load while Moss is out.
Stay with Moore! That kid is something special. Do everything you can to keep Bennet healthy, meaning sit him the rest of the year since a potato chip in the back of a pickup truck on a bumpy road is more durable. Keep Bennet for trade next year with Miami or another squad for some "D" players. Moore is a solid running back. The kid had his head on straight. He set records in college and has that certain something. Sure Bennet can break a long one now and then but he either gets 45 yards or none. MeMo makes yards out of nothing. Keep MeMo, Ontarrio and Ned as a backup.
They ought to sit Moss against the Gints too or use him for decoy like last week. I don't think it's worth losing him for another 5-6 weeks. Get him healthy for Indy and Green Bay after this week,

I stand corrected. You rock!! I must have been thinking about Wolvie. Although jethro came back and snatched the lead from you two for this weeks big winner. Good job jethro. I can't believe that you're on top and haven't one a single week yet. Nice.

oops...i forgot to pick again...
:(
If I would have put $$$ on it...... I think I would have remembered to do it...
I told you all earlier this season. Our D still sucks. No way this game should have ever been close when you are up 21 to 0.

ya and BS is BS
I'm tired of the coaching staff saying it is a W....its BS...
but......
Maybe this is what they needed a GOOD scare!!!

Has Hovan been demoted yet?

WEÂ GOT ANOTHER ONE!!!!
I feel like we might have seen a touch of the '98 Vikes after that doosie.
[Edited 3 times. Most recently by on Oct 17, 2004 at 09:07pm.]
This ears Vikes remind me of last year's KC Chiefs. Their defense will kill them when it comes to the playoffs.
I fear jethro may be right. Unless the D turns it around teams like Seattle and St. Louis can beat them.

Should Bennett get his starting job back or should we stay with Moore? I say stay with Moore and trade the fragile Bennett after the season.

Stay with MOORE...until Bennett can trust his knee and hit the hole.

use him for decoy like last week
Exactly. That way he can surprise the shit out of the Colts in front of a national audience. And we know how much he likes to do that.
I agree sit Moss. Don't even use him as a decoy. Burleson, Campell and Robinson can take up the slack.
The Giants ended the Vikings 6-0 start last year. Time for payback!
SKOL VIKINGS!!!!
Come on Vikes! Sheesh! Just score damn it!
UG and LY
To make matters worse, Washington is losing to the Slackers. That means Kerry wins the election. What a bitter day. =(
No frickin D by the Vikes. It's official our D sucks!

Hey, it's a year for firsts.
Who'd of thunk the BoSox would come back?
If I heard correctly, it had never been done before!
And the Vikes never winning a super bowl?
I'm liking this idea of a year of firsts.
Purple& GoldJoe
Well I'll be damned! Maybe the Vikes will win the Superbowl this year!
Let's start with the Colts on Monday 1st  ;-)
bastards!!
get my hopes up and then I get shot down.....
Â
Sucker!
I am trying really hard not to rant on the refs. Let me put it this way, the wife left the room because I was ranting to much.
LOL
Scribe is always saying, "They can't here you in the TV".
As loud as I was that just might have heard me =)
bastards!!
get my hopes up and then I get shot down.....
I'm liking those standings for the picks. :)
Yeah, you've rocked big time the last three weeks! WOW!!
You could even take the lead if you play your cards right.
[Edited by on Dec 14, 2004 at 07:45am.]
Are we looking at the same standings, it shows me in first place already?
