quad 4 ??Â
Haha, I'm the young one in here. 22 by the time the hunts rolls around.
I will be graduated (a semester early, thank you very much) and full focused on the hunt.
What is the actual starting date again, I have jury duty the week of Jan. 17

I have jury duty the week of Jan. 17
I had jury duty this past spring. It sucked, but could have been worse. I was so busy at work I was worried I'd actually get a case and be out for six weeks or something.
I just hope you're in some other county than Hennepin. I heard it sucks big time in Hennepin county.
Well I feel relieved now to be in Ramsey Co. What was your experience like, I've been asking around but been hard pressed to find anyone who's had to go through it. I'm actually a little excited about it.

Ok, this could be a long rambling post.
I was scheduled to serve one week, Monday through Friday.
If you don't get called for a case, that's all you serve. However, if you get on a case, it can be longer. One woman that was there got on a murder trial last time she got called. She was on the trial for six weeks.
The court clerk said most people settle before they go to actual court. So your chances of actually serving are pretty slim.
You can get on a civil or criminal case. Rarely ever do you get sequestered, but the woman that was on the murder trial did get sequestered for the whole six weeks, which she said sucked royally.
So, I only had to go to the courthouse on two days.
I had to show on Monday to check in. They group the 100 or so of us into smaller groups and gave us group numbers.
They called one group that day, and about noon they said that all the cases for the day had settled, and they sent those of us that didn't get called home.
They gave us a number to check in after 5:00 every night, and see if we needed to show for the next day. They do it based on your group number.
Tuesday I called and they didn't need me. Wednesday I called and they needed me to show on Thursday. I went in Thursday, but was sent home around 1:00. Thursday night I called, and they didn't need me Friday.
That's about it.
Oh, I got paid only for the two days I was there, but it's only like $30 a day or something like that. You don't get paid for the days you don't go. Not getting paid from your employer is not an excuse to not serve.
I have a friend who's a law student that got called for jury duty recently, but she got out of it because of her being in school. Unlike a job, where they think you can miss, they let you off for school.
Thanks a lot for all the info, the more rambling the better.
I used the fact that I'm in school as grounds for an extension, but they made it seem like I couldn't refuse to do this and had to find a time to work it in, so I fit it in during a break.
So it sounds like you just had to sit around and wait all day on the first Monday, what did you do to pass the time, can you bring anything in to read?
After you didn't get called the first day, were you required to keep calling each day that week, or once you are relieved, do you not have to come back?
So you basically just have to be available each day the week that you are scheduled, even though you may not need to be there? And after that week (unless you get a trail) you are done?
Thanks again for giving me an idea on what to expect.
Your recollection of your jury duty experience is about 99.9% of what everybody goes through JT. Word for word. The only thing I would add, although not relevant to M2K, is that they do reimburse for daycare if needed provided you get some sort of receipt. Other than that, the answer to your questions are yes unless they ask you to stop in again. It really isn't that big of a deal. I know that a few of us who were waiting to see if they needed us or not were happy the Monday they sent us home, but kinda bummed that we didn't get to serve on Thursday. Unfortunately, most of the cases that don't settle out of court are lame ass cases brought by freshmen lawyers trying to get their feet wet. Murder trials are few and far between.

Monday I brought a text book to read, I was studying for an exam I had so that was actually kind of good. On Monday I learned they had phone lines in a room with tables, so on Thursday I brought my laptop in and got some work done.

Yes, I had to call every night after 5:00 and see if they needed my group. When I called on Wednesday night, I was told my group was needed to come in on Thursday.

Yep.

Yeah, I already figured that whole week would be devoted to serving, I mine as well get what I signed up for. Hopefully I get some first hand experience of the judicial system, it sounds like it could be very boring if you just sit around and don't get call, or interesting if you get a decent case.

I wonder if they have wireless access, that could help the time pass. I don't know how strict they are with the rules, but they said I couldn't bring in a cell phone, so I wonder if they will be alright with laptops.

No, they don't. However, Excel Center had wireless last winter. Wonder if they still do.
but they said I couldn't bring in a cell phone,
Yeah, don't bring your cell phone. It's contempt of court, and they can and will throw you in jail and make you pay court costs.
so I wonder if they will be alright with laptops.
I brought my laptop and logged in to work through the phone. It was slow going on dialup though.

Too bad they can't apply that to people who keep them on in movie theaters.

One more question, how big is the area where we have to wait around to be called. Is it cramped? Are there places to plug in a laptop?
[Edited by on Nov 5, 2004 at 11:48am.]
It's fairly large and there was plenty of room the week I was called. There's two rooms off to the side of the main room. One with phone plugs for your laptop (You have to have your own dial up account. Luckily I have a VPN for work), the other room is has a TV.
All in all, it's boring as hell.
All in all, it's boring as hell.
best sleep i ever got paid for ( my employer makes up the difference in pay )

I got called up the 2nd day of my jury duty and questioned about porn on the internet and what I thought about chat rooms. I answered honestly and thought that the prosecution would want me because I said I was against child porn and the like. I said if it's adults online I didn't care if somebody paid for a porn site. I think the case was about a guy picking up a kid in a chat room for sex. Turns out the defense wanted me, but I was rejected by the prosecutor. I was glad I was dismissed. That was on tuesday in Ramsey county and I never went back the rest of the week. In all I spent 2 mornings there and called in the next 2 days and told not to even call on friday. I was really boring. My wife gets to go next Nov 29th.
The 2005 festival is set for Jan. 28 through Feb. 6. There will be no ice palace, but crews will erect a replica of the state Capitol in snow and ice to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Cass Gilbert-designed building.
I'd be happy as hell I'd didn't get called on any case with porn involved....i'd feel gross everyday on my drive home.

I'd feel like I was on trial. ;-)
(not child porn of course)
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
This tree is next to a paved path along Nine Mile Creek in Bloomington.
weird....
I seen only the top half of the picture and looked at who posted it and automatically thought it was a Christmas pot plant. Then I scrolled down.
I've seen similar decorated trees in Valley Park.
It was cool, but weird. It was in the middle of nowhere.
Just stopping in to claim this....
Joe
oh thats funny as hell...
Awe
some!
I couldn't get that picture on purpose if I ever tried.
This was two years ago. The girl taking the pictures was like "do you want your money back?"
I was like hell no! Make that camera click!!!!
man... im scared of that dude, too... he lives in the mall for like 2 months a year.
he lives in the mall for like 2 months a year.
Kinda like Tom Hanks
I wonder what Santa is thinkin'...
My son-in-law was pulled over for speeding in Cottage Grove over the weekend. He had his three children with him, ages 6, 5 and 2. The two year old started crying and climbed out of her car seat and was clinging to him just sobbing. That got the five year old crying too and then when the officer asked him for his proof of insurance and he didn't have a current one, the six year old joined in! The police man gave him a warning and then proceeded to tell the children that police men are good people and not to be afraid. LOL I wonder what he was thinking! You have to love those kids!
Did he pay them off once the cop left? Awesome scam.
Never thought about the times having kids around can be helpful. Wow!
I took a cab a few months back, and the driver was talking about how he got pulled over for speeding once, and the excuse he gave the cop was that his wife bought him new shoes that were too tight... he said the cop started laughing and said that becaue he had a good excuse, he was gonna let him go with a warning.
When our kids were little one year, we were running really really late for Christmas dinner with Mrs. Frosti's family. I was driving faster than usual, and she told me to speed up. She said, "If the cops pull you over, I'm going to pinch one of the kids to make her cry." I thinkshe was kidding.

I seen a Candid Camera episode where they had a cop pull the cab over and issue the speeding ticket to the rider because they said step on it. It was pretty good seeing how fast they got pissed off.

I thought it went well with the picture.
There's my christmas cards!
HA HA HA HA HA....... Think I won't be marketing this one lol
This picture reminds me of the Christmas Story.  I am just waiting for Santa to push them down the slide.   I do feel bad though, they were so scared it took almost an hour to calm them down:)
