Saint Paul, Minn., November 29th, 2004 - The Saint Paul WinterCarnival will kick off the festival season with the introduction of the 2005 WinterCarnival Button designs on Wednesday, December 1st, 2004, in Town Square on the Skyway Level, Downtown Saint Paul. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m.
For the first time in the Saint Paul WinterCarnival's history, the public has determined what the button will look like. Â In recent years, Concept Group of Saint Paul has designed four unique buttons for the Saint Paul WinterCarnival. The buttons, a WinterCarnival tradition, provide financial support to free family entertainment and identify Carnival supporters. This year, Carnival planners sought the public's opinion regarding the best button theme. "Button Up Bob!" the design contest, ran from October 7-12 and asked the public to choose a favorite from six buttons. Â "Purchase of the Saint Paul WinterCarnival button is the way every Saint Paulite can support their WinterCarnival and this year the people choose the design," stated Robert Viking, President/CEO of the Saint Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation. Â The 2005 designs continue the branding "The Coolest Celebration on Earth!" which was established in 2000.
Votes were cast and registered both online through
, and with a form that appeared in the Saint Paul Pioneer Press newspaper. Â All those who cast a vote for their favorite design were eligible to win a trip for two to the Great Divide Lodge in Breckenridge, Colorado. Â The winner will be presented with the trip, courtesy of Carlson Wagonlit Travel, as part of the Button Unveiling.
Speakers for the Town Square press conference include St. Paul Mayor, Randy Kelly and 2005 Festival Chair, Cindy Carvelli-Yu. Â The 2004 Royal Family and Vulcan Krewe will also appear. Â Entertainment will be provided by the Reuben Ristrom Trio. Â Mayor Randy Kelly will be purchasing the first button from 2004 Queen of the Snows, Jennifer Sherry.
Buttons will be available throughout the Eastern Metro at retail locations such as Cub Foods, Super America, TCF Bank and Karen's Hallmark or
www.winter-carnival.com
to find a retail outlet near you.

"The Coolest Celebration on Earth!" January 28 - February 6
I seem to remember last year they had buttons out, but I couldn't find any retailers that supposedly had them with any in stock until around the middle of December.
Anyone know of a good spot to check this weekend for them?
Tickets $8 - adults $5.50 - seniors, children under 12
There will be no advance ticket sales. Tickets for the 12:30pm show will go on sale at 12noon. Once the first show starts, the second show's tickets will go on sale (at approximately 12:45pm).
The Bell Museum Auditorium is located at 17th and University Ave. S.E. on the University of MN East Bank campus in the Bell Museum of Natural History.
Bell Museum Of Natural History 10 Church St SE Minneapolis MN 55455 (612) 624-7083
Linders Greenhouseon Larpenteur always carries the buttons and last year they had plenty leftover when people couldn't supposedly find them. -They were available before Christmas cause the kids bought me some as a gift.
Someone broke into my neighbors garage yesterday during the daytime! I heard a noise from that direction around noon when I had just got home from running erands but didn't even think someone was trying to rob him. The person also tried to get into his house through the back door and tried through the basement window! YIKES!!!!!!
Wednesday, December 1, the People’s Choice button will be revealed at the 2005 Button Unveiling and Festival Rally. Buttons will be available for purchase at local retail stores and on the web-site beginning December 2nd.

the one Kitch posted was the one chosen (I think most of the cooler crew agreed on it being the best of the options, due to the shovel toting people on the button, hopefully in reference to treasure hunters).
They show the winning designs in Kitch's link above. And I agree with the treasure hunt button being the most popular. If I see others, I'll ask why they aren't wearing the shovel design. Aren't they true Americans? ;-)
see, I am just getting this same info as Kitch and CM -just a bit late-I feel like I am in a time warp:

2005 Saint Paul Winter Carnival "The Coolest Celebration on Earth!" January 28 - February 6
Officials this morning unveiled the designs for the 2005 St. Paul Winter Carnival, which will run from Jan. 28 to Feb. 6.
This marks the first time the Winter Carnival has sought formal public input by asking voters to choose from among six prototype designs in determining the final look of the souvenir buttons.
The final designs of the four related buttons were the work of a design group.
“We believe one of the strong reasons for the choice of this year’s button is the fact that it reflects the very strong following of the 54-year-old Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt,” said Robert E. Viking, president and CEO of the St. Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation, producer of the Winter Carnival. “The treasure hunt, like the Ice Palace, has become an icon for the St. Paul Winter Carnival.
“We further believe that the overwhelming selection of the button and the strong mail-in voting reflects an identification with the many public family-affordable events that the people of St. Paul have grown to enjoy,” he said.

Duh :) I doubt button sales wouldn't be half as much if it weren't for the Medallion Hunt.
Things have been a bit busy here. Sick kids mostly. My little one got bit by a spider on his eyelid today. So it is always an adventure. Both OTS and I are looking forward to seeing everyone!!
How many people have found it and didn't even buy a damn button?
Excellent point. But that only shows that there are more people hunting than there are buying buttons. ;-)
I'm starting to think that I can increase my odds by digging by some poor idiot that doesn't understand the fact that he needs to buy a button to collect the entire prize. Those damn bandwagon jumpers do it almost every time.

Make sure the poor idiot is digging near where Marley parked, and I think you've got a formula for success.
hmm I guess theoretically the casual hunter (or somebody just outside on a whim) has a better chance of success, in which case my best shot was back when that mother and son kicked the pringles tortilla chip lid over at merriam, that was the first year I had casually hunted.

checked an SA tonight, they didn't seem to have em out. Seems like it was last year, the retailers are supposed to have em, but the people stocking don't seem to think about actually putting em out for people to buy.
Skis? Who uses skis to dig for the medallion? Good choice for the winning button though. Is that Digger's family? Looks like a few winter souls are starting to surface on here. STILL waiting for Green. That elusive pissant. Heh. Happy belated adulthood Regman. I now have to go and take photos of small boogery children. Have a cooler day, all.
My work just told us that they are laying off the entire 2nd and 3rd shifts on Dec 30th. Merry Christmas! They have to pay us through the end of Jan though because of some layoff law requiring 60 days notice. Pretty much every one with under 20 years is gone. (I have 16)
Every one go out and buy some White Rain products to keep me employed!(like thats going to happen)
They just bought the place from Gillette in 2000 and so far are running the place into the ground.
Perfect timing though since my wife is going to be out of work for 6 weeks with no pay for surgery that her workmans comp don't want to pay for and denined the claim. Her insurance won't pay either because it's work related. But what the heck. It's only a waiting list of a year or more to get a hearing in the Wisconsin court system...
Bought mine this morning. Ended up using the tried and true SA on white bear ave (just north of 36). Got em there last year too, least they put em out somewhere you can see em :)

Cool the old hudson road location is the one I usually stop at.
So, which design was chosen? I was at twincities.com but can't find anything.
the one Kitch posted was the one chosen (I think most of the cooler crew agreed on it being the best of the options, due to the shovel toting people on the button, hopefully in reference to treasure hunters).
I think its a series of the 4 buttons.
Â
true, guess my post would make it sound like only 1. Of course I'm betting out of the 4 that'll be the most popular one worn.

Tasha at the downtown SA said she thought they were $17 for all 4Â or $5 each
Me2's on a button  ;)
