Hi. I'll post the answer to the 1979 trivia question......
Of course, the medallion was hidden outside of Ramsey County. If you go back and read some of the letters to the editor following the hunt, people had always made the assumption (without it ever being in the rules) that the medallion had to be in Ramsey County. People were kindly (and some not so kindly) making reference to the fact it could be hidden anywhere, and wanted some boundries established.
Terry, you are partially correct. There were four people out hiding the medallion at Marthaler Park at about 1am in the midst of a major snow storm, and a police officer pulls in to the parking lot and shines his light, so 3 of the four "cluewriters" fake a snowball fight. Where was the fourth? Stuck up to his shoulders in a snowbank(!), and he stayed there until the policeman left. Here's the kicker. Orignally, they were going to put the medallion on the base of a tree on the south side of the parking lot at Marthaler. Problem was, there was a snowbank that was about 8 feet tall (lot of snow in the winter of 79) where they were going to put the treasure. (Hence, one of them attempted to walk up on top of the snowbank just before the police arrive) So they split up and began looking around the area to look for another tree, and one was found on the east side of the lake, not far from their orignal spot. A couple of new clues are written, and they have a hunt.
Wow. That is so Cooler. Reading this stuff is like being there. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge, Newbie.
Keep going! :D
Chair-O-Kee was my first year. My favorite Hunt. Know any weird facts about '98?Â
Or "Trees In A Line/Wood Row" Conway, '99?
Know anything about Spotters? Well, they DO exist.
I know a weird fact about when The Med was last hidden on the Capital Mall, don't I, Ter?
Ter, ask Newbie if s/he knows anything about muffs.
thanks...that is cool!
I can't imagine thinking that 4 people knew where it was....
ask Newbie if s/he knows anything about muffs.
HaHa! if it's a guy you can bet he does ;)
Your Dirty!
should i get naked and take a bath?
I don't get it.
Come on LL - I'm at work - I can't go to a meeting for an hour now. How am I gonna explain that?
Hey - Is Terry missing her muff again?
Kitch, it was Mr. and Mrs X, and Mr. and Mrs. Y.
Here you go Green.....
Another question no one will know the answer to, but its interesting none the less.
In 1999, Don Boxmeyer had a problem. In order to solve this problem, he had to share his identity as cluewriter with someone. What was his problem and who did he have to tell?

Use it for a presentation?

Millet? And his health.
LLADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well he didn't tell Camo Terry, thats for sure;)
What?! Just a suggestion :) wouldn't want him to miss his meeting :)
Hhhuuummm... Am rethinking my Boxmeyer answer...
"Nonetheless" is one word. Not three. Though Word lets you spell it either way. Toe-may-toe/toe-ma-toe.
Nah. Still gonna go with Boxmeyer.
For my money, Jim Walsh is one of the better (and more unappreciated) writers working in the Twin Cities.
Why would Boxmeyer wanna hang out with us freaks?
Use it for a presentation?
LOLLL!!Â
At least I'd have my easel stand already
Well, THX, he did for at least two years. Prolly more, but I don't know for certain.Â
He really liked The Hunt and doing the Clues. He may be missing it. He was sure good at it.
And we're just quirky enuff to possibly be interesting to him. He likes neat, weird stuff.
Frosti, I like "Walsh"!
Newbie kind'a writes like he does. Could bee... Could bee!
He likes neat, weird stuff
Check
Don't ever go away. We're here all year.
"I realized that the interesting people and places nobody ever wrote about held more fascination for me, and for my readers, than all the governors, mayors, and city council members who never seemed to be much persuaded by my opinions anyhow. I began to collect hermits and hobos, bare-knuckled bar brawlers and bread-baking nuns, short order cooks and hockey coaches, drake mallards named Jake, and bridge tenders, band directors, bear hunters, and quiet old men who wept softly when we talked about the friends they'd left on the battlefield."
hmm..
I wonder if Jake has Boxmeyer's booya technique?
1999 was Conway. The last good Hunt, as far as I'm concerned.
It was when Boxmeyer hung up the noodling riddles, me thinks. I think his health (liver/kidney) was starting to get bad and that's when he eased up on writing and started writing only occassionally. *I* don't think he wrote any Clues after that.
So, I stick with failing health. And I think he told Millet because of their shared interest in The Hunt/history/neat stuff.
Rite? Wrong? Kind'a rite? Kind'a wrong?
Yeah, Newbie, don't ever leave. As we're fond o'saying about The Cooler:
"You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave."
COOLERHEADS PREVAIL!!!

Well I've heard that story about Marthaller and the clue writers before, but only once so I don't think a lot of people have. I am trying to remember where I heard it from and I think it was Trent actually. Trent also said there will be extras on the dvd of NTFCF with the interview he did with Boxmeyer that treasure hunters would really like. So I believe it is either someone that has access to the NTFCF tapes, was there for the interview, or maybe was there for the actual event! Trent/Jackie/Boxmeyer are all good guesses. I don't know if he was here the year they did the Boxmeyer interview, but Angus is my sleeper pick for who 'newbie' really is. He seemed interested in the hunt and probably knows a lot just from what he has picked up in being present for interviews. Angus is my guess.
P.S.
In the version of the story I heard, they had to go to a movie and sneak out in the middle of it because they knew they were being followed. Good stuff!
In 1999, Don Boxmeyer had a problem. In order to solve this problem, he had to share his identity as cluewriter with someone. What was his problem and who did he have to tell?
my guess -Â
his problem - he had diarreah(sp?)
who he told - A park ranger/cop/whatever, in order to get them to let him use a bathroom.
So they split up and began looking around the area to look for another tree, and one was found on the east side of the lake, not far from their orignal spot. A couple of new clues are written, and they have a hunt.
I know who told that story- and if you went directly east of the lake you would be in the street.
It was east of the lake but down in the south corner ---just north of the parking lot.
Boxmeyer- liver :( and he told Terry Knapp

January 23 at 6 pm Sunday Night
I believe I know who newbie is...
Greg Sax.Â
newbie is definitely not me or Jackie, and we're the only ones who have seen all 300+hours of the NTFCF footage (outside the 21 minutes we showed in NYC Sept. 2001). We've shown some filmmaking friends very small parts of the film, and obviously the people who worked on the film were there for certain interviews. But there's just no way that newbie got his/her info from the film.
At one time, he was having some of us type up the articles that he had. I had a bunch of them to do and one was the Marthaler incident with the hiders. I didn't remember all the details, but that's why I think it's him.
On the other hand, it's sorta funny he wouldn't post as himself.
Our daughter Bridget, who just turned 2.5, refers to Green as "that woman who screams a lot." The poor kid... her whole life, all two and a half years of it, has been full of endlessly hearing treasure hunters yap about the hunt. I wonder if that will end up doing some long-term psychological damage to her. I guess any exposure to Jake could have long-lasting negative effects on anyone.
If you're planning on raising your kids in the St. Paul area, there's no damage done about hearing stories of the hunt.Â
I couldn't say the same thing about Jake.
Speaking of Jake, I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a bold prediction about this year's hunt (and to borrow a quote from Santa Dave):Â "The medallion will not be medallionated this year."
LOL, Terry. The problem with Bridget now is that she wants to wear her snow boots every time she's watching us edit.
I've told Jake that when we move to MN, that he's not allowed within 500 feet of our children. The state of Minnesota should pass a similar law regarding Jake.
You, Trent, are a smart man and a wonderful dad.
Trent- what are you going to do with the kids during the hunt? Are they coming?
Man Trent! I look at your avatar and realize that I must have been looking at the wrong Frog pond all along. Shoot!
Here's some good deals on frogs if you wanna play in your own backyard.
