That picture was perfect ESD.. thanks fort getting that taken care of.

I'll slice some pants and old shoes and try to get him a little more realistic.

We can drag him everywhere we go so anyone wants to take him feel free.

We don't make it to all the events anyways with schedules and such.

I have them in the back of my jeep. I'll bring them to the PDG. I have some big ones I'll bring inside and the others I'll have to give to OTS to get ready to mail. I'm sure the stuff will need sorting and what not.

Well, good news and bad news on the 54 button front. Here's the email I got from Larry.

I don't have a '54, see if they have found one yet, I might be able to
get one.  See if they need anything else for  the soldier, am willing
to make a donation.  Larry

The guy is pretty good about buttons, he sells on ebay under llvintage, his prices are sometimes a little high, but the buttons he has are in very good shape. Do you think Zeph is interested in any other years? I have one 54 myself, I suppose I could part with it, perhaps get a different one from Larry in exchange for it. Perhaps if someone else emails Larry too, it'll solidify the fact this is for a soldier and he'll know it's going for a good cause. I'll PM his email addy to anyone interested in persuing this with me.

Grandpa Dan Zachary

All's I can say is WOW! You folks are amazing!

A little background-Zephyrus (Jason) is my wife's sister's son which makes him my nephew through marriage. He is an amazing kid (if I am still allowed to call him that) from a good family and if anyone deserves all this, he does. I wish I could tell you some stories about him and why I feel that way, but I do not feel right about putting personal info about him out there on the internet. Let me just reassure you that you made a good choice of who to do all this for.

I really hope that you can come up with that button that he wants.  His grandfather was the one who found it that year and he shared it with his sister-in-law Audrey.  Larry would have been proud of Jason and would have gotten a kick out of meeting you all, but sadly, he is no longer with us. I am trying to get Jason's grandmother to go with us though. Maybe she can pick up Audrey on her way in.  Audrey is in a nursing home and has cancer, so I do not know if that is possible.  It would be nice to get her out for an evening if we can though.

Jason is going to be working with his wife this year over the internet to try to find the medallion.  Wouldn't that make for a cool story? A soldier in Iraq e-mailing his wife to find the medallion in honor of the grandfather who once found it. I hope they pull it off.

Anyway, some things that Jason told me he would like is:

  1. DVD movies-they have those personal DVD players and enjoy movies. Jason likes horror, thriller, comedy.
  2. Chocolate-he says that it is about the only time he gets chocolate because it "gets all melty". I figure that M&M's are the least "melty".
  3. Slim Jims-He said that he bought some when he first got there in September and it was hard as a rock due to the extreme temperatures. I want to get some homemade deer jerky to send him as it is better than Slim Jims.
  4. Crystal Lite-We found some at Wal-Mart that you just dump one packet into a bottle of water and shake it up. He told me that the water is horrible over there, so any kind of mix should be appreciated.
  5. Reading materials-he loves to read.
  6. Anything that we like here and take for granted, he says they love there.

  7. I mentioned catching a fish at his grandmother's lake and mailing it to him, but he didn't like that idea. I don't think it would get too stinky. haha.

That is about all I can think of off the top of my head.  The cardboard cut-out will be a special touch that he will get a kick out of. I bet the news reporters pick up on that one also. As I mentioned earlier, they have DVD players, but I doubt they have VHS, so if you can put any home made videos on DVD, that would be the way to go.

I hope to be at Mc Govern's to meet you and thank you personally on Sat. night.  For now, on behalf of Jason and the entire family, our heartfelt thanks.

If worst comes to worst... I will send him my 1954 button. One way or another we will get him one.

Grandpa Dan - One note is that we will be in the basement - down a full flight of steps.  Depending on Audrey's mobility, I thought you might want to be aware.

Audrey needs a walker to get around, so she would have a hard time with the steps. Thanks for the heads up. And thanks again for everything.

Maybe a planned gathering at the nursing home could be done.  What's everyone's thoughts about that?

Obviously not Saturday, but maybe Sunday?

Terry... that is such a great idea! If she really wants to come to McGovern's we could seat her upstairs in a seat of honor and all take turns going up to meet her.

I'll be picking up my big lot of buttons tomorrow. I think there's a '54 in there ( is that thr right year? Don't make me go back and slog, so correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyway, if there's one in the lot it's Zeph's.

Thanks for doing my research Timmers. I have read through the lot so much I've forgotten what all is there except for what I need to fill spaces in my own collection.

Cool so the button is taken care of. Do we know if Zaph is interested in any other years? Since I've got Larry interested in making a donation, might as well make use of that. OTS see what you can find out.

Is Grandpa Dan coming to the pre-dig-gig?

The wife and I are planning to go McGovern's on Saturday night.  We will try to be there at 7:00 P.M. and don't know how late we will stay (getting to old for this stuff ya know). I talked to Zeph's grandmother, but she said that it is suppose to snow that day, so she doesn't know if she can go. I am trying to talk Zeph's wife into going, but she isn't feeling well and has to find a sitter for the kids. Zeph's mother is interested though. I told her to bring the 1954 treasure chest for you guys to see. I thought you may be interested in that. She said that they used to have a treasure chest that you hunt for. This is the one that Zeph's grandfather found.  Still got the official papers and everything.

Hope to see you folks there and thanks again.
