2005 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by THX 1138 on

Discuss the 2005 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt here.

OTiS

  • Treasure Hunt clues will be published in the Pioneer Press on the front of the Local section beginning Sunday, January 23, 2005 paper. A new clue will publish daily through Thursday, February 3, 2005 unless the medallion is found prior to that date. Read the daily clues to search for the Pioneer Press medallion hidden on public land in Ramsey County. The medallion will not be found on the State Capitol grounds, on a golf course, Como Zoo, at Harriet Island or at any construction site.
  • If you find the Pioneer Press medallion, immediately return it to the Pioneer Press, 345 Cedar St., St. Paul, to qualify for the $2,500 initial cash prize, $1,200 of groceries (one $100 Twin Cities Cub Foods Gift Certificate per month for 12 months) and trip to Mexico (blackout dates and some restrictions may apply). Win an additional $2,500 by bringing in all the published daily clues from the Pioneer Press and providing them along with the found medallion.
  • The Pioneer Press also will award an additional $5,000 to the finder if he/she is a registered 2005 Winter Carnival Button owner and has mailed an official entry form postmarked by Saturday, January 22, 2005 to the Winter Carnival office.
  • If the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion is not found by 11:59 p.m. February 3, 2005, the Pioneer Press reserves the right to terminate the hunt and donate the prize to a local charity.
  • The Pioneer Press reserves the right to discontinue the hunt at any time if public property is destroyed.
  • All contestants agree that the Knight Ridder, Cub Foods, MLT Worry Free Vacations, all other contest partners and their respective affiliate companies, parents, subsidiaries, advertising representatives and agents will have no liability whatsoever, and will be held harmless by contestants of any injuries, losses or damages of any kind resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, misuse or use of the prizes or participation in this contest.
  • Except where legally prohibited, by accepting the prize, the winner grants permission for the Pioneer Press and its partners and those acting under its authority to use his or her name, photograph, voice and/or likeness for advertising and/or publicity.
  • At the end of the 2005 Treasure Hunt, Pioneer Press Treasure Hunters may take the published clues to any participating Twin Cities Cub Foods stores for a chance to win a $500 or $300 Gift Certificate from Cub. Clues and entry information must be dropped off at participating Twin Cities Cub Stores by Friday, February 11, 2005. A random drawing will be held on Friday, February 18, 2005 and winners will be notified by phone.
  • No purchase is necessary to win. Photo copies, handwritten and/or online printouts of the published clues will be accepted. All contest rules and decisions are final. Employees and immediate family members of Knight Ridder, all contest sponsors and partners, and the St. Paul Festival and Heritage Foundation are not eligible.
  • For a list of winners, write to Market Development, 345 Cedar St., St. Paul, MN 55101, or visit TwinCities.com.

Of course... again we run into the same deal as every year.... people will talk about the fair Grounds blah blah blah.. and then three days into the hunt hte PP will put out a statement saying it will not be the fair Grounds etc etc.

At least they have the trip added to the prize again this year.

No... no makeup, no nothin... we havent even met face to face yet... started out e-mailing and leaving comments on eachothers blogs, and its advanced to talking on the phone.... nothin to brag about, by far....   But hey... I "did" talk her into doing this stuff... so thats a plus, right??

I described the hunt, and all kindsa other winter-carnival stuff, which she had kinda/sorta heard a little about, and she said it all sounded real cool, and couldnt wait to jump in....

Maybe I should look into getting back into telemarketing.... ya think?  I could prolly do a good job selling snow, and cold weathery fun activitites, if anything..

Perhaps a bar/restaurant?  Say near the PP? Heh.... it would give people a place to hang, other than the Not-So-Rockin Lobster.   It could be called   "The Cooler" or somethin like that.

The place closes an hour prior to clue release time, and there enough of us, where we could rotate day shifts.....  hell... i'd work days anyhow, cause i prefer night hunting to day hunting anyways...

in the event, that a hunt would last til 12 clues... the place is closed, and we consider it a holiday.

Interesting local section in the PP today...the clue writer's actually going to talk to us but not reveal anything...very interesting. And Soucheray's article couldn't be any more obvious. Isn't there a saying that says something to the tune of the louder you shout the less believable you are? And that he mentions Jake without actually saying his name is just stupid. That kid doesn't need any more attention.

I see THX read Soucheray's article...nice tagline. He really hit the nail on the head there. It's kind of like he's mocking us.

It occured to me after I sent mine that I think the article said you can send them in starting today at noon? So not sure what will happen to the ones we sent yesterday.

I think Joe makes "the caller" sound like a maroon.

    I'd say he's more of a puce.

I'm working on starting up a singles club as a business, but it seems almost everyone here is married so that won't work.

And yes, the more Joe denies it, the less believable it sounds.

Here's another question to ask. If they retired the old Medallion, what do you think the new one will be like? Bigger? Smaller? Same material? Will it have a GPS tracking unit in it? Anyone want to bet it's about the right size to fit in a doughnut hole? (Like the old ever could have been made to fit inside a doughnut).

Actually, I suspect that if Joe isn't the clue writer, he wants to be.  He really has a sincere love for the Winter Carnival.  Now, Merriam was a different writer, but since then, I think its been the same person.  Someone with a liberal arts education and a deep knowledge of St. Paul history.  Both of those could be Joe.  But given it is a newspaper, it could be anybody on the staff as well.

The arguments against Joe might include being on the radio 6 days a week and writing a regular column might not leave time.  But he does go on vacation often...

I used to believe it was Joe. However, I think he would write clues that lead you to the spot if you could figure them out. I don't think he likes it when a person picks it up who is not an avid hunter. The writer of the last two years, doesn't have a clue about treasure hunting. Joe certainly has a clue. Also, it would be difficult for him to hide the medallion because he is so recognizable. He would need an accomplice.

My brother is friends with the weekend editor of the PP. I talked to her this summer about it and she said a few things. She thinks treasure hunters are nuts in a bad way. She can't stand us. Also, she hates Joe. (She is generally a negative person). However, she was interested in the way the last clue made the hunt so dangerous. She said that wasn't common knowledge around the PP and if it was known, it was sort of kept quite.
