There's a fair number of people out there diggin' around, but more people just standing in circles and pondering. It seems like every fallen tree has been completely rooted up as well as some that haven't fallen yet. There's still a ton of undug up snow and a lot of potential hiding spots, but it's hard to know where to start.

The life preserver has been moved to who knows where, some of the numbers have been taken down off the signs. It's becoming havoc. I still feel bad for all of the flattened yarrow. :P

Just got back myself, but from my point of view there was quite a lot of digging going on. Wouldn't be surprised if the puck is found tomorrow.

Gonna hit the sheets now and get back up to be in the park in the morning.

Good luck everyone! Get out there and dig!

Just got home too - lots dug up, but lots more to go. With most people clustered in the same general area, it won't take long before its found (but then again we said that last year after the pump house clue).

See you in the AM

I think, thats what pisses me off the most... why the hell cant people leave stuff alone, instead of messing with things, and moving them, because they think "this will be funny, and throw people off, if its in a clue!"

But anyhow... thats pretty much the area we were in, back the night of clues 3-4, and tonight, it was torn up... alotta the good, obvious spots, were nothing but dirt/mud, and no snow to be seen....

iceman699: There's a guy named Matt who has an image that says FNORD that has a lot of ideas about building a better community (jump to Post #4464). I bet chat is something he'd like to discuss.

Changing the community game is probably going to be fruitless this year with only a couple of clues left, but I admire the desire, and I'll be keeping your e-mail handy.

For this season, I think people are pretty well entrenched here and at the PP discussion boards.

Hey all.

I have been at Crosby since clue two, so I know it very well at this point.

1) Nobody (at least not a treasure hunter) removed the number from that third post.  It hasn't been there the whole time.  The numbers go 2, 3, blank and then suddenly way down the path the next post reads 10.

2) The life saving device (once again it is a 5 foot long, heavy wooden plank of criss-crossed boards.  It is painted bright yellow and has a heavy duty length of rope fastened to the one end).  There are two of them that I know of and they are both on Upper Crosby, not by the marina...and they have both been in a new location every single night, because people are playing with them or moving them for fun.  So, you see...this wasn't exactly a great clue.

Later all...going to bed now.

I did some research on the magical tree and check this out!!

The Magical Christmas Tree
It was quiet in Crosby Grove Forest. Occasionally, the wind blew puffs of snow from the frozen branches of the evergreen trees. Tiny icicles clung to the bark, and the brilliant sunshine made the trees sparkle.

One little tree in the forest sparkled more than all the rest. This tree was the animals' favorite, and for many years they decorated it with all sorts of goodies from the forest.
On Christmas day, the quiet woodlands quickly came alive with the sounds of all the forest friends. Two small Doves, Eagles flew in first, carrying strands of silver in their beaks. Gently, they wove the shiny tinsel in and out of the branches. Dressed in silver, the tiny tree looked dazzling.

The beavers arrived next. With their powerful mouths, they pulled a cart full of White balls. Animals from all around the forest appeared and dressed the little tree with the beautiful round ornaments.

The squirrels and chipmunks rolled over each other trying to get to the tree next. They hung all kinds of old-fashioned ornaments on the little tree. The prettiest was medallion. One squirrel scampered up the tree to place a traditional star on top.

Finally, the fairies of the forest appeared with their special fairy dust. As they hummed "White Christmas", the fairies sprinkled handfuls of fairy dust around the base of the special tree and atop its branches.

"Merry Christmas," said the birds and the bears and the beavers of Crosby Grove Forest.

Chat is phat. These discussion boards are quite nice, too, if a little disjointed. I can certainly live with it though. The best threads (like this one) rise to the top of my slog list, as do the ones over at the official PP board (like "Clue #10"). It works for me.

Earlier today, this area had quite the heated discussion about the Cooler Clique and all that this has become. There was some disappointment expressed about "invitation only" discussion areas and the overall lack of continuity in this realm. It was a healthy discourse.

I have some thoughts...

As an early mover in things Cooler (I designed the logo at the top of the page, I sure did!), I enjoy my "inner circle" status but mostly I don't use it. Meaning I like this wider net more than the invitation-only area. I fully understand why a sidebar area was built, but I don't have to like it. It shaves against the grain of why I got into this stuff in the first place: Community.

I have an idealized vision of what the medallion hunt means to St. Paul and to urban centers everywhere. It's about (relatively) big town people putting on coveralls and chatting up ideas at the local Seed & Feed Co. -- we got each other's back and we'll seeya at the hockey game, ya?

I know it often ends up becoming an ugly lottery on that last day, complete with trampled nature, rude behavior, and the occasional car crash, but the first ten clues are magical. We talk openly in this forum; we talk openly in the field; we wish well; we help out; we commune.

I'm reminded of Dave Jotblad and Tom Roach, two random diggers that wisely forged a quick partnership at Highland Park in 1994, figuring two shovels were better than one. Or of 1995, and Cookie Howard, Kay Anderson, and Rachel Olson who finally found their medallion at Battle Creek after three decades of searching. There's a couple of endearing community stories right there just in two years' time.

And now the Cooler Crew is part of that lore, even part of a clue (!), and that should be cherished. Whatever this space is, it has the hunt at its core. There are splinter groups and inside jokes and all that, yeah, but when that clue comes out at midnight, we're all pretty much on the same page. If we create a few folk heroes along the way (like this season's wonderful Zeph storyline), then all's well, I say.

I use the discussion boards to add a little more zest to this favored hobby of mine because the people here are, on the whole, pretty dope, and because I'm far away from the action (Hint: I can see the Golden Gate Bridge from my home office window). My longtime St. Paul friends that hunt and peck for the medallion aren't nearly as responsive to my queries and whims as the Cooler Crew. So I'll take the discussion board setup imperfections, the cliqueiness, the goofball flamers, the long-winded rants, the LOL!!! space eaters, the stars of the show, the lurkers, the newbies, and the "oldtimrs." That's community.

(Note: If you've been to the PP boards, you know how well regarded "Oldtimr" is over there and you'll get my purposeful sic; might this be "OT" on this thread? Hope so. Yer good company.)

I loved the earlier dialogue on the appropriateness of invitation-only sidebars. I just wanted to say nobody should be bothered by that. This is the thickest, most worthwhile thread going on the medallion hunt. Some of the PP discussions have become more pertinent as the hunt nears an end, but this one's still the most fab.

I say the more places to yap and share, the better. Good for iceman699 for starting up a chat. Good for THX-1138 for doing all that's done here. Good for Ares for taking up the reigns. Good for NAHF for creating a chronicle of this moment in time. Good for Jesse Anabis for pulling some words together. Good for Steve Worthman for pulling some images together. Good for me2 for being the only person I knew prior to all this. Good for Matt for stirring it up right. Good for Allison Wonderland for responding with proper thought (and for his beard). Good for Green and her not-green hair. Good for the Camo Crue for being the most recognizable outfit on the range. Good for T. Valentine for being the best period. Good for anyone who posts here regularly or doesn't post but likes what they read and feels compelled to return regularly. Good for anyone who is taking a cookie break right now out at Crosby at 5:15 a.m. to buy another hour of energy for digging before heading home for a shower before work.

Good for me. It's all good for me.

G'night.

...as the day progresses, I'd like to hear field reports and "word on the street" vibes about those yellow life rafts. Is the consensus that the clue writers were foolish to write removable objects into the clues? Are the "life-saving devices" still there? That kind of stuff. Thanks much.

streeeetch. Well that clue just gave away como, huh?
I think It's way cool that most of us have been in the right park for days.
HEAR THAT GREEN? Oh, I'm sorry honey- It's in BC, It REALLY is! I'll come dig with you on Friday. I promise.

Tue, 02/01/2005 - 5:05 AM Permalink
KT

Well good morning! I can't even noodle that last clue until tonight, as I have to do this thing called 'job' at this place called 'work'
If nothing else, because the clue didn't outright state " Hahaha! It's in Como" One would have to assume that it's in Crosby, not far from the shifting numbers, moving life saving devices, by that one tree. Do not confuse that tree with 'the' tree, or 'those' trees it's not there.
It's that "one" tree, just behind and off to the side of those other trees down there. Oh yes, and it's a magical tree.

Greg - As always, I love your middle of the night musings.

As of today, my hunt time is limited to the point where I doubt I'll be able to get out there anymore.  After all, work comes first as it pays the bills and though $10,000 would be nice, it's not enough to retire on.

Good luck to all out hunting today!

It's still a fairly large area, if you consider the trail between markers 2 and 3 is the main trail closest to the lake, and there were several of those life rafts around that area. Late last week, I briefly wondered if those lift rafts would eventually come up in later clues as markers, but I dismissed that thought pretty quickly because I didn't think the clue writers would use a marker that could be easily moved, which apparently these have.

I'm going back down tonight, after work... gonna see if I can get outta here early.

I am going to try to leave work early to head down to Crosby... re: those life rafts... I know they've been moved and all, but I wonder if they were just propped up against a tree, or if there was something on the tree to attach the ropes to, like a nail or something?
