That's how I read it AW.  The bark had fallen off the branch when it fell of the tree and was on the ground independently of the branch.  They pried it out of the snow and ice.

allison- i think they did tho--

"One of the branches was down and the bark came off the branch when it came down," Ryan Melville said. "We pried up the bark and found it." The Melvilles and Estepp said the trampled, dirty snow around the tree made it clear other searchers had searched near where the medallion was located. However, Judy Melville noticed the snow beneath the fallen bark was white, so the group pried the bark up with tools they brought and discovered the medallion."

He got us to the right park early and there were no surprises at the end.  What more do you want.

I agree that I thought the clues were much better this year. There wasn't anything in there that I didn't hear someone mention at some point, so all the explanations were accessible. And yet they weren't so obvious that everyone was in the same spot either. They did a good job of walking that line, and some of these were pretty clever too. If it was the same cluewriter, they seem to finally be getting the hang of it. If it was a new one, then I say about time! hehe

I still think clue 5 was the worst, it lead many people (including me) away from the medallion. I think we would have been better off without clue 5 at all actually.

it says "kick OFF the island..." well, live and learn! The hunt is fun tho. My homework can now get done. DARN

how does "prairie style shelter" get into Clue 5, anyway. It is an interesting shelter, but where does clue 5 say it is prairie style??? Yes, 5 is lame.

Clue 5 was definitely in the wrong place - but not necessarily a bad clue. I've heard that a number of clues are written and only some are chosen to appear in the paper. Maybe clues like 5 and 8 get thrown in to prolong the hunt when we are too early in the park.

Putting away the boots.  Throwing my jacket into the washing machine to get the smell of bonfire smoke out of it.  Piling up my old papers with the clues and taking them out for recycling.  Fixing a decent dinner tonight.  Going to bed before 2:00 am.  Turning off the lights and shutting the door.

I want to gain an advantage by being able to figure out the clues. Any yahoo could figure out Crosby, and if they couldn't figure it out early like us, the cluewriter helped them out by telling them 5 more times! With a park like Crosby, knowing it was there early obviously didn't help because it's so huge. At the end the clues progressed a little bit, but I would have liked to see a chance to get within a 100 square yards of this thing between clues 3-9 with a little bit of good noodling instead of guessing.

Souch is getting better, but he's not there yet.

I'll just say this.

This park had us all going with at least two ideas on locations. But last night and this morning we were all in the right spot.

It really is only a matter of time.

Wwwwwaaaaaaaah!

One of these years I'm going to get vacation time on the books so I can put some real time out in a park.  Hardly got out at all :(.  And even then, I was in complete denial that it *could* be Crosby -- was there, because that's what the clues said...but didn't like it - and was waiting for that clue that was going to send everyone scurrying to another park.

Alas.  I doubt we'll get down to GW either.  Emily still is not 100% and I'm beginning to think
<gasp> I might be getting it.
