Like my animals - I like to name things using real human names.. and I decided to dedicate my first cache in a way to the puck hunt - so I called it 'clueless joe'.  I made it a letterbox - so I can write clues for that sight as well. (practice my clue writing skills)

KCO - nope - no license..  I am going to have to sit down with my little manual and figure out all it's cool options !

LL - yeah - I thought of the lurkers - also of what my two dogs would do to them...

Do any of you have a Magellan Gold?  that is what I got - it can interface with my software & has removable secure digital memory sticks - so my storage capacity is infinite. (or so I hear - haven't gotten that far with it yet)  but any tips for it would be appreciated

Ran into a fellow geocacher out at Crosby hunting today. Was an older fellow, saw I had my GPS out and asked if I found the medallion yet (yesterday someone saw me out there and said I looked like a veteran hunter with that GPS in hand..). I told him no and he then went on to discuss geocaching a bit. Didn't catch his username though, but I'd never met him at an event or anything, he might just be a casual cacher.

Rino 130 looks great....You guys please give me your personal recomendations.

I use the 130 and would reccomend it, but other cachers probably have different preferences. As a rule, I'd say at least stick with a garmin, they tend to be good units all around.

Garmin without a doubt...can't go wrong with just about any unit....

(I'd avoid the cheapest ones......you want anything that you can load more maps into it...)

the more I think about it...it doesnt really matter what  ya get....

C.A.G. used to have a cheap yellow that got stolen....he upgraded....and now he hates it....said that he wants a yellow again....

 

but.....like I said ...if its mine....I would seriously pay the money to get a gps that has "auto-routing" and space to at least UPLOAD MAPS....

then you can use it for so much more then geoaching.....

I have the 60c..... its a little cheaper....

One of the feature that I really like.....is the auto-routing....it will create a driving route and tell me exactly how long it would normally take to drive.

usually right on the money!!!!! nice to call my family and say I'll be home in 23mins. when I'm accross town.

 

Good call Kitch... I know lots of people use the standard yellow eTrexes from Garmin, but I had a lot of trouble with mine, so I replaced it with a Magellan. Other eTrex owners have told me theirs work great, so I may've just had a bad sample. My Magellan works incredibly well.

I've had my eye on the new Garmin GPSMAP 60CS, but the price is still too high for my pocketbook, and I really haven't had a need for a mapping GPSr so far. Is that the version you have, Kitch? This GPSr looks like it's got everything you need to get from point A to B and then some.

Now that is cool. Where'd you get yours? I may do a bit of hunting online to see what the prices range.

Found another virtual cache that can be done from the comforts of your own computer. Kitch should be able to get this one in 5 seconds, and if he can't, I'd be disappointed.

One of the GPS units our reps are using is giving readings that are off by enough to make a difference.  Is there a way to re-set them or adjust them?  The last reading we know was off was off by about 2 miles. 

I've started looking at GPS units. If anyone could answer these questions, I would appreciate it.

Is the Garmin 60CS worth it? I am a gadget freak and I hate buying stuff that I am going to want to upgrade soon. Also, hubby and I do hiking and other things that we would like it for. Finally, will it work in a car?

I also looked at the Garmin Summit (B&W and Color). These are both cheaper alternatives. What are the advantages and disadvantages to these models over the 60CS? Is the Summit color easy to see in the sun?

When it comes to software, what are the restrictions if I buy a Garmin? Am I limited to only buying Garmin software? Is there a wide variety of software to choose from?

Is the 60c worth it??? IMHO YES!!! ---gotta buy the maps for it...only garmin sells this....its worth it.....

I use mine for so much more then caching....the maps have cafes, bars, gas stations, hotels, churchs, you name it......with address and phone numbers of them..... The maps will allow you to "auto-route" (figure out the driving route for you)

I honestly don't drive anywhere more then 10 miles  from home without it.....its more important to me then my cellphone....

I've currently have minnesota and wisconsin fully loaded on maps...its got a ton of memory....also the do hold a good resale value if you don't like it....

 

Me and Steph got the Garmin Rino series (me the 130 her the 120). We like these because of the radio and the ability of the two units to talk to each other. When we are within radio range we can tell where the other person is, is going and has been.

We also bought the metro map pack. Kitch is right, the amount of information at your fingertips with the map pack is out of this world.

I've been using my GPS so much the last week that I practically forget I had a cell phone.

If you get a rino...you will know where KCOGRN, OTIS, and PAYME are located in the park at anytime...

 

Re: the C vs. the CS, I can see why I don't need an altimeter, but why wouldn't I need a compass?

Does it work in a car. If we are going to spend this money, John needs to be able to use it to find his way in the car. He has a horrible sense of direction and gets lost coming home from some place new.

FWIW, most GPSrs come with the "ability" to have street mapping, but most don't have more than a base map built in. Meaning all you get is major roads, highways and freeways. If you want to use a GPS to navigate in a car, you need to buy a software map that you download into the GPS. That can run you almost as much as the GPS itself, unless you buy a high end GPS that already comes with the software.

But, would you know which way is north if lost in the woods? The difference is price is $30 on Amazon - $369 vs. $399.

Now, if I were to buy the same software that Kitch owns, what would that cost me?

Ours work in the car. I know there are mounts that you can purchase if you are into that sort of thing.

From what I could tell the C and the CS have screens that might be better for driving.

Mine has a digital compass the 120 does not. The unit knows where you areand what direction you are moving regardless so a compass to me seems like a quick reference luxuary for when you are standing still.

Kitch, you have the same software I have?
