What is Geocaching?

Submitted by King Boreas aka Ian on

Flash Intro-"Geocaching"
6 minute Movie-"Searching for a cache"
Basic Info

  • Buy or borrow a Global Positioning System receiver. A basic unit is the Garmin eTrex GPS or Magellan GPS 315. Both cost about $100 and can be found at stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy or online at http://www.amazon.com
  • Find a cache near you at <http://www.geocaching.com> Enter a ZIP code and the site will list nearby caches. Select a cache, such as "Geocache by Ray" or "Arboretum One" and click on its "details" button. Write down the cache's coordinates and print out the description. Use the online mapping site link at the bottom of the page to get driving directions to the location.
  • While still at home, enter into your GPS receiver the coordinates of the cache as they are listed on the Web site. Coordinates -- such as N 39 degrees 24.661; W degrees 094 14.86 -- describe the latitude and longitude of the site.
  • Follow the driving directions until you can drive no closer to the cache and park your car. Follow the arrow on your GPS receiver as it leads you to the cache. Be aware that heavy tree cover can block the GPS signal. Once you leave your car, it could take anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to find the cache.
  • The GPS signal will fluctuate once you are within 100 feet of the cache, so from that point on, you're on your own. Check around stumps and under rock and leaf piles. Remember that almost all caches are placed above ground, so no digging!
  • Congratulations! You've found the cache. Take an item, leave an item and record your experience in the logbook. Reseal the cache and put it back exactly the way you found it.
  • When you get home, e-mail the person who hid the cache and let him know you found it. Also, post a description of your experience on the cache's online page at <http://www.geocaching.com
     Have Fun !

I'd go, but it's a work day, or else I'll be out in california (road trip, the intention would be to hit a cache in every state on the way back).

Geocache Containers

Boxes to hide stuff in.

I have made up three type of boxes, all made from government surplus watertight metal storage containers,
which are hearty and do not become brittle with the cold or age.
They also are water-tight which is very important in this state.

I painted the insides with Rustoleum white enamel so the contents can be seen
easier than in the original dark olive drab green.
The outsides are painted with (1) Rustoleum "stone" paint or (2) Rustoleum Camo paint.

Nice shot KC.  Looks like a cool place.

We've always known you to be #1 Ian - It nice to see the rest of the world now knows it as well.

The male series will be next. I haven't decided if they should be a different storyline, or if they should have missions to track the Women. That sounds kind of fun.

Tracking women?  OK!  Good idea about Riff Raff tracking Wonder Woman  :-)

March 28 by M&Dsearching (2 found)

Wow, what a first find. Guess I should have read it a little better. This team was a double team. M&D Searching and Spunkytina. Two single moms and two young boys (5 & 6). Both of us girls are Small to average sized women. First we went up a private drive and saw a woman in a car. I got out of the car and walked up to her and asked her if she knew what geocaching was. She replyed "No". So I was going to explain what it was and ask if she knew of anything on her property. I said, "Ok, what it is..." That is when the woman pushed me and said, "Please leave." Wooo, what a rush. So we decided to get back on I35 and head south. The GPS was gettting even closer, so we stopped and the Rest Area and then after a little searching, We found it. First find and now we are hooked!! Took a small toy car and compass and left a Incredibles toy. Note to all. NOT IN A PRIVATE DRIVE. LOL Happy Hunting

Call me crazy, but is this a safe place to put your house keys? Kinda ironic, I'm hiding my key in an inconspicuous looking rock to keep people from finding it and gaining entry to my home... but wouldn't it be cool if that rock had a nascar number on it?!?!!

Heh, real warning on the ebay page should be "I am not responsible for theives breaking into your house if you actually hide your keys in this rock"

Su Doku. KC0GRN didn't find it on 2005-03-28.
6:15 PM

After reading the logs, I knew this one wasn't going to be too easy.. Argh, another one of those kind of hides, I never could get the hang of them. Spent a good 45 minutes looking, and getting mocked by some punk kids playing in the baseball diamond.. Stuck around until the sunlight was almost gone, really was hoping I wouldn't have to post a dnf, but in the end, it was just too dark to continue, guess I shoulda had a flashlight with me. *sigh* I'll be back for this one later, but for now, just found out my car needs a little work....

thanks for the laugh...the punk kids mocking u! ha...I'm sorry man 2 funny...

I can just see the little kids walking around in circles fake holding a gps.
