Wow.  I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with that precognative (or whatever you call it) thing going on.  Happened to me many times now.  One type of thing that happens to me right before someone dies (within days) is while I'm asleep, a loud voice wakes me up by saying "ARE YOU READY?"  I fear that dream like you wouldn't believe!

Yup, I get the same thing. When my now ex-boyfriend's mom died, I was at work, and for some reason I looked at the clock. It was a nice warm day and a breeze came through. About a half hour later, he called me to tell me his mom died, and it was when I looked at the clock.

My grampa died about a year and a half ago. Similar to the nursing home story, but with a lot of extra really sad stuff that I won't go into, he had stopped eating and had taken off his oxygen. I remember being asleep and dreaming of him in the nursing home, only he was smiling and was feeling better, and I jumped awake to the phone ringing telling us he had died. My mom told me he came to me first.

my grandpa died in Jan of 03 6 months to the day of my wedding, he died in the hospital around 10 pm. Around 9:30 I kept having this really weird feeling like something was going to happen, and by about 10:15 my mom called me in histarics and told me that my grandpa had died, and he was supposed 2 walk me down the isle.

A few nights later I had a dream about him and 2 of his buddies from back in the day, coming to visit me while I was working at my family's restaurant, and he looked like 30 yrs younger. He was 65 when he died, had a treich or how ever the heck ya spell it to breathe and was on oxygen 24/7. In my dream tho he was young and healthy again, but I knew who he was. It was so amazingly real. Everytime I think about it it makes me tear up, because I served him and his friends coffee, and they asked me about my wedding and stuff, I mean I actually carried on a conversation with all 3 of em. Then like 10 minutes later my grandpa looks at his watch and said it was time to go, and I got to hug him, and tell him how much I loved him. Then they all walked out the door and just faded away. He came to me because I didn't get to say goodbye to him.

My grandma died in May of 04, almost a year and a half to the day that my grandpa died. The day she died she was supposed to move into her "dream home" with my mom and her fiance. She was in a nursing home for rehab because she had been in the hospital for 3 wks and was really sick. She had signed her release papers and was telling the ladies at the front desk that she was excited because my mom was coming at noon to pick her up, take her to lunch, and then to their home. She walked back to her room, and about 15 minutes later a nurse went to check in on her and give her the rest of her meds before she left, and she found my grandma dead on the floor. She died at 11:30 am, a half hour before she was to leave the nursing home.

My story is a little backwards where I felt like I was the Grim Reaper to my dog.  He was progressively ill over 6 months and for totally selfish reasons, we didn't have him put to sleep.  That's one of my biggest lessons I've learned in life.  We all still feel bad we let him go so long.  Anyway, I had a feeling that if I ever told him that I loved him, he would die.  So I didn't.  This went on for the whole time he was sick.  One day I had the thought that he would die and I didn't get to say that I loved him one last time so I did before leaving for work.  I came home and discovered him dead at the foot of my bed, where he hadn't been for weeks.

At first I felt like I caused his death but then figured that he was ready all along and was just waiting for me to say it to him one more time.  It was really tough for all of us.  It still is.  Typing this brings me right back there.  I'll always sympathize with pet owners when other people treat their pets death as minimal.

RIP Barney

(who started this depressing stuff anyway?  sheesh!  jk-ty)

He was waiting for your permission to go Cluey and you gave it to him... no matter how much it hurt. Don't feel like you were selfish to want to keep him around, because no matter how sick he was he loved you with all of his heart, and I really believe he held on for you because of that love. So don't feel down about it, you did a good thing. Ya really did! :) *hugz* I'm really super attatched to my pets too.. I dunno what I'll do when my cats die.. they're like my lil kids!

DAMN!  TMK swoops in and pulls off another awesome post.  You continue to amaze me. Thanks for the new tag.

Our worst fears were confirmed yesterday.  The lump(s) we had removed from our 14 year old cat were cancer, they say with a "guarded" chance of returning.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they got it all and it won't come back.

Hey mom.  In the past year, both my cats (Moki,16 & Shayo,14) had cancers.  I never knew how common it is in cats.  Sorry to hear of yours.

One evening years ago, I was at a fashion show.  I got a horrible feeling specifically about my cat who was pregnant.  My friend was irritated when I insisted I had to get home immediately.  When I arrived, everything was okay.  I put on jammies and hopped into bed.  My cat jumped on my chest and went into labor.  First kitten was born on my chest.  Ouch!  Everything went smoothly and 4 precious kittens were born.

The next day, while at work, I had the same horrible feeling again.  I told my employer I had to leave immediately.  When I arrived home, Moki had just given birth to a fifth kitten, unfortunately dead.

I miss Moki (mom) & Shayo (daughter) very much...

Sorry to hear about everyone's losses...

I've since gone out and gotten a kitten.  She's a terror, but I taught her to SIT. :)

Mom, I'm thinking of you...  But I can't comment at the moment.  I gotta just let it all kind'a like sit there awhile.  Hope you understand.  Not that I don't care, but it's too raw right now for me to deal with.

Master, same with me and Hattie, my first ever Abyssinian.  I knew it was time for her to go, but I knew she'd never leave until *she* knew I was okay.  I told her I loved her and that she needed to leave - for her own sake - and that I was going to be okay; that I wanted her to go because I loved her.  She peacefully left just minutes later.

Otay...  Think I'll go find something else to do.  I can't handle this.

A.

Thats a rather broad question, and I'd have to give a general answer.

Given proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary visits, a cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. (The average age of cats is 12-15 years) This is, of course, barring any serious medical conditions.

Cats that are indoors-outdoors usually don't last to the the average age because of traffic accidents, fighting with other cats, intentional acts of violence, poisoning (accidental or intentional), diseases caught from other cats, being picked up by animal control and subsequently euthanized if not claimed, and death caused by predators.

"Stray cats" AKA "feral cats" usually don't live more than a couple of years because of starvation or all of the above.

Oldest Cat Trivia:

  • The Oldest Living Cat

According to the Guinness World Record (of 2002) the oldest living cat was then a cat from Victoria, Australia, named Kataleena Lady. She was born in 1977.

  • One source
says the longest-lived cat was in Devon, England; a tabby named Puss, who passed on shortly after his 36th birthday, in 1939
  • Manx and Siamese have been mentioned as being among the longest-lived pedigreed cats.
  • The Jaguar is said to be the longest-lived species of cat, sometimes reaching 30 years.

My cat is my baby. Jake will be 17 in May. This year we found out his kidneys are started to fail. He is on a low protein diet and still acts like a kitten. But, I know, if nothing else happens, kidney failure will kill him in the next few years. I can barely think about it. I don't have kids. I have Jake. Anyway, let me see if we can find a picture.

leelabell has a cat named Jake. (hope Jakes lives a long life)

Seems to be a popular name around here....

My Lucy is old and still goes out, but she don't roam off the deck most times. Occasionally she'll go out in the grass, but never to far. In winter she hardly goes out at all. In summer she'll stay out all day though. Don't go any where any more though. Too old.
