I do remember the "if you were the animals" sign now that you mention it. Been so long since I was in that park. If you go across the tracks from there, there is an old grain elevator or mine shaft thing that you can crawl into. You can't see it above ground, but it's just on the other side of the tracks and goes down a very steep hill.
To be honest, I myself never saw the coin. Jake knew he wouldn't really get to hunt because he's up in St. Cloud going to school so he asked if he could just help with the hunt. He said all he really wanted to do was to be the one to hide it and write the last clue. Neither of those are parts I really get into so I said OK. Jake and I met at Crosby to see where the treasure was there the day after it was found and then we went over to Sackett (I had already come up with the park and the concept). We scouted out the spot we wanted and gathered up a bunch of leaves that Jake took with him. Jake then put the coin in the Eclipse box (which I think he got from Tim during the Medallion hunt) and taped the leaves to it and he went and put it out there. He wrote the 12th clue, and then also ended up writing the 2nd clue. We both had input on Clue 11.
Now that this cool hunt is over...could someone explain to me how many hunts each year you all have, who decides to do it, etc. There have been references to the hunts of different people and I was curious if they are annual or sporadic?? Enlighten me!
Well yea, that's probably true actually. Though I remember I felt silly poking around there alone so I wanted someone else there too. It helped that you're one of the few people whose phone numbers I had handy :-P
There are some other hunts that are put on by different municipalities that some here follow, such as South St Paul, North St Paul, etc. AW does his hunt yearly and I think a few others do it sporadically.
Some other interesting tidbits about the hunt from behind the scenes.
Jake hid the treasure, though I knew where it was supposed to go. He suggested I should go check it to be sure the day of the kickoff party so I went out there. There were actually two sets of upright posts along the trail and it was to be at the first one. I looked there, and I didn't see it. So I went to the second set thinking he had made a mistake and I didn't see it there either. I went back to the first one and then I finally saw it. It was hidden pretty well since even I, who knew where it was, couldn't find it.
Jake got the coin when he went to watch the World Poker Championship at the Bicycle Casino in LA. It was kind of funny then when the show, in which you can see Jake in the background, actually ended up airing during the hunt. That should have cleared up the whole Bicycle thing for anyone paying attention.
I had picked Sackett before the Medallion Hunt actually. I had the spot picked out and about half the clues written when Jake called me and told me to turn on channel 5. Here the whole area around Sackett was covered in police doing a manhunt for someone who shot a cop. We had to ponder at that point whether we needed to switch the parks, but I didn't know if we could really start over. In the end I decided that it was an isolated incident and it wasn't necessarily a hazard just to be in that area normally. There is a Boys and Girls club there and if it's safe enough for kids to be there, I figured the few hunters who got there before it was found should be ok. I was at the park 3 times and it was always pretty serene. But still kind of an awkward moment.
I would LOVE to do a hunt...I have been doing one up in White Bear for 10 years, started one in Nashville and now have started one in Bloomington. I would love to do one in good ole St. Paul. How have people gone about finding a prize in the past?
I suppose it's kind of late now, but I feel compelled to explain the unJoe one more time. Post 2000 is a Joe. Post 2007 is an unJoe. It's like January 21st is my birthday. Today is my unbirthday. And you know, so is tomorrow. Happy unbirthday to me.
How have people gone about finding a prize in the past?
Mostly either soliciting donations or putting it up themselves. I did something a little different for this hunt which seemed to work out well. In the past we had a few people who donated large amounts. This time I encouraged everyone to just donate $10 or something worth $10 and then offered a $25 bonus if they donated and they were the finder. That way no one person has to bear a big burden and everyone's small donations are more appreciated.
Randy Rust $10 Randy Rust's guest $10 OT $10 LuckyStrike $10 MrMNMikey $10 & Lager set $50? value Me2 $20 & bag of M&M's, $3 value Movie Fund $20 Mr. Med Hunter (Treasure Hunt History Book, $14 value) Tim the Hunter $10 OTS $10 Terry Valentine $10 THX THX 1138 DVD, $18 value Kitch $10 Rush Harley $10 & (case of Vine Park Beer, $20 value) Ian (Geocaching Prize Pack, $50 value) Muckluck $10 & 4 CD-R with WC button designs and 1983 WC poster, value $20? (from REI) Mom & Dad $10 Sunny $10 John W. $20
My first hunt the prize was a Monopoly Game. My second hunt the prize was two tickets to the Saints game. My third hunt the prize was $500 because everyone started throwing money at me. It was the year of the Merriam hunt where a lot of people never got out at all because it ended so early. They were itching for a hunt, so people started giving me money to make a bigger prize and thus a more interesting hunt. But really, the prizes have ranged from large to small. A bigger prize will probably draw people out a bit more, but a lot of people are content with a small prize and a good hunt.
I'm pretty sure I've run out of interesting things to say about the hunt for the moment, so I think I'm going to go eat lunch and get on with some of the thousand other things I need to try and get done today.
ok, as far as going out... most of us cant on Thursday the 17th- what is best for anyone? tonight? Wed? Fri? -I cant on Sunday, I am going to the Timberwolves game. I happen to like Ferns, The Moose and Spankys...is there anything quaint like these out SSP way? TMK gave the reigns for me to choose the rest/bar. ;)
Kitch is gonna be sad, I don't think he got within a block of it.
Â
Upset is a better word....
I know I have a witness somewhere to confirm this...
but during me2's hunt ...the lady at orchard told me that Sackett is no longer part of the St. Paul Park system and why a Boy's and Girls club...
she said that the NFL is a big reason that boy's and girl's clubs are poor and not a good program compared to Parks and Rec.
If you slog for my posts about Sackett you will find out that I've talked about this in prior posts....I never had sackett in my book even Have a big X on is in guide book 2.
Figures.....grrrr....burnt myself on this one....Heck I love sacket trails are cool.
I knew of the rocks, trails, crappy tennis courts, missing park signs, etc...
explains why there is no st. paul park sign anymore......I'll post more on this later...
Â
I'm not wanting to take anything away from TMK, Me2, AW, and JAKE...its just something that I want to put out.....
AGAIN!!! THANKS!! Like I said ...I've learned more this hunt then anyother hunt!!!
Â
Linwood still fits the clues better!!!! (tunnels -car parking to houses on st. clair)
(corners stones of the lots on st. clair)..
Like I said...I'll post a complete recap on this.....
I think the state fair will be much different.
Your right though about the kids...what could they have been thinking?!
Here's a few pix from me2's hunt last year where I was sold on Sackett for the first part of the hunt.

Mine is annual. The rest tend to be more sporadic. You could do one if you wanted!

so besides Ames being anagrammed...were there any other games?
Clue 11 would have had another anagram, but that was about it really, other than the hunt as a whole being a sort of game with the two step thing.
"That should have cleared up the whole Bicycle thing for anyone paying attention."
I was paying attention. :)Â I posted that maybe Jake brought back a coin to use for the hunt.
Â
wow AW- that is crazy about the manhunt. It is a lonely park though.
If I woulda known we were hunting men I woulda searched much harder!
Â
That should have cleared up the whole Bicycle thing for anyone paying attention.
DOH!

Cool, thanks for the info. AW.  I will think about putting something together if there are folks who would want to look for it.Â
Typically it's best to have the hunt start at least a month after the previous hunt. Give people's cell phone bills a chance to cycle ;)
