Good Evening!
I like the webcrossing format - mostly because that's what I'm used to.
The 3000 post limit at World Crossing isn't a huge deal. Setting up a continued discussion is a matter of hitting a button. If we numbered the discussions, we could keep control of all that.
What I haven't liked about some of the other things you've all experimented with is that there gets to be a bazillion discussions and nothing follows. For that we could go back to the PP boards.
And while there seems to be some discussion about work - if any of you know of openings at your employer's for an Office Coordinator/clerical type person, I'd be interested in getting that information.
I interviewed for a position where I am currently a couple weeks ago. I know it was between me and one other person. No decision yet. I'm hoping that comes through, but if not, I'll be available mid July.
Getting together to discuss any of this face to face can't be weekends. Between trying to take care of the place up north, we have a trip back to Kerkhoven Father's Day weekend and a couple of graduations the next two weekends.
With some notice, I could be available during the week. I'd just have to plan out things with my Mom.
Before I went, I did want to post this. We know how WorldCrossing is now, but what will happen to it if this place goes under? If we have to move there, how many others will go there also? If there is a large increase on site demands there, how will the sysop react? May there be a demand for more money, may there be more restrictions on things? Just something to consider.
There are already many from the PF boards that have forums set up at World Crossing. Many were originally set up as a back up to this site. My understanding from what I'm reading is that many are now planning on using that site when this one goes.
If you follow the link in my last post to the current discussion from folks here at PF, it sounds like they too will be going pay to post and using Web X software.
If that indeed ends up happening, and it does sound hopeful, we would have a choice.
Although I think Mark has his heart (and interests) in the right place, I don't see how helping pay for a new start up site, where it could go belly up in 6 months if they don't get the entire amount, could stand a chance to their competition as is. I guess I don't see the difference other than the moderation and $. But if we can get pf to jump behind him and his partner and pledge the entire amount up front, it could prove positive.
If we had $5K pledged in membership fees and donations, then that would be great. I don't think we are far from that at all, but it will be clearer when we set up something to automate submitting pledges and generating up to the minute reports on what's been pledged.

exactly. and that's why i'm trying to track down the limelight software from theperfectworld. she wrote it to look very much like the webx format. i think basically the thing we'd all prefer most would be something that has linear forums as opposed to threaded.
that said, looking at both wowbb and phpbb, i wonder if we can disable the ability to create new topics under a given forum? it would add another click for users to go through to get to the thread, but it would enforce the linearity we're all used to.
it can literally be themed however to look like whatever we want. including, i imagine, webx. the only thing i don't see it having out of the box is a private messaging system, which for most of us is a deal breaker. searching for that feature on the web site.

under the wowscrpit...we can disable members to start new threads...with would be ok as long as we set up as many as we have here...
the folder format could be layed out the same....
I'm looking into how to ban users (easy)....but trying to figure out how to do "private threads" I know it can be done ...just a matter of how.
its also has a very good IP tracking system in it...
next question on wowbb. can it do subfolders the way we currently can? i know phpbb can't out of the box, but its a planned feature for the next release, and there are patches out there that enable it right now.

As the saying goes, if you build it - whatever it is - they will come...for the hunt.

TMK, World Crossing can handle our traffic. It's gotten much better than it was a few years ago.

I can attest to that. They also have the resources because they are connected to the Web X software.

I'm getting the hang of it now...
Ares and THX 1138...I moved you to full admin rights...so you can look around....
currently its got 3 main topic areas.
then folders in those...
then folders in those...
Can't go any deeper then that.
Can't really do a another subfolder...can start a new topic area.....
member folders would be nice for paying members...it has a place where can take donations or subscriptions...etc...
I can see where this could be a nice feature for hardcore users like myself, ian, cluemaster photos, ESD, etc...

sql queries are fun :)
Can you give people host access to their own folders?
yep!
you can do that on both...
basically you give them MOD rights to just the folder.

Sorry I was outta the loop for a bit.. I couldn't get on yesterday and then we had meltdown at work with the storms.
You guys decide how you want to handle this.... tell me what you think. If we need to pay then we pay for something....
Whatever it takes.
If we decide as a group it's all good for me.
