And it barely touched him. He'd still probably win if he could run for President again. He's wildly popular -- even GW recognizes that and paired him with Bush 41 for the tsunami relief effort.

By "teflon" I mean that they never seem to get burned when they get involved with questionable financial shenanigans. The press helps them a lot, too.

I wouldn't call itTeflon in the way they called Reagan the Teflon president.

It could be characterized as anything from shamelessness to survival instinct, to relentlessness. The one you pick is probably tied to your point of view.

MR. RUSSERT:  Let me talk about some of the things you have said about the Republicans.  Here's Howard Dean in January:  "I hate the Republicans and everything they stand for..."

Howard Dean in February:  "This is a struggle between good and evil and we're the good?"

Do you really hate Republicans?  Do you consider them evil?

DR. DEAN:  I don't--well, actually that was a little out of context.  But I don't hate Republicans as individuals.  But I hate what the Republicans are doing to this country.  I really do.  I hate deficits, as you know.  When I was governor, I really was very tough on fiscal responsibility.  Deficits in the long run aren't good for the country, and they do lower our standard of living.  Every American family knows that you have to pay your bills.  I hate the dishonesty, you know, the idea that you'd put a program through Congress without telling people what it costs, I think that's wrong.  Some of the things that the president said on our way into Iraq, they just weren't true, and I don't think that's right.  So...

MR. RUSSERT:  Such as?

DR. DEAN:  Such as the weapons of mass destruction, which we have all known about, but the...

MR. RUSSERT:  Well, you said there were weapons of mass destruction.

DR. DEAN:  I said I wasn't sure, but I said I thought there probably were. But the thing that really bothered me the most, which the 9-11 Commission said also wasn't true, is the insinuation that the president continues to make to this day that Osama bin Laden had something to do with supporting terrorists that attacked the United States.  That is false.  The 9-11 Commission, chaired by a Republican, said it was false.  Is it wrong to send people to war without telling them the truth.  And the truth was Osama bin Laden was a very bad person who was doing terrible things, but that Iraq was never a threat to the United States.  That was the truth.  It was underlined by the 9-11 Commission, headed, again, by a Republican, a well-respected group of people.  I don't think you send American men and women to war, first of all without properly equipping them, and secondly without telling the truth to their parents about why it is we're asking them to make that sacrifice.  So those are the kinds of things that I think are very bad about the Republicans.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7924139/

Wow, this guy is out there. Osama isn't responsible for 9/11 even though he admitted it? If we didn't properly prepare our troops, how did they go through Afghanistan and Iraq so amazingly fast?

Unbelievable.

Howard Dean also said that we shouldn't be quick to judge bin-laden in 03.

This morning he said Tom Delay should go back to TX and serve his time.

I was under the assumption that a person had to charged and convicted before that happened. Not in Howie's mind.

The Democrats have good candidates, now, great people. It's not a matter of changing, because the only thing they can change into is Republican Lite.

Accept the fact, now that the only place Republicans will go is UP. They have the power, that they have craved for decades.

Things will slide as far as they can slide and all you can do is wait for it to hit bottom. And there's no timeline for that.

What do you think about what Dr. Dean said about Republicans, Dan? And I mean the early stuff.

You mean in the interview?

MR. RUSSERT:  Let's go right to it.  The Republicans say on Tuesday that if the Democrats do not stop filibustering their judicial appointments made by President Clinton--President Bush, they will change the rules for the filibuster.  What will that change mean?

DR. DEAN:  I think the change will be dreadful for American democracy, and I think it's going to be, frankly, very bad for the Republican Party.

It was a brilliant idea when the dems wanted to do the same thing though.

One of the great geniuses of American democracy, unlike most of the democracies in the world that minority rights are protected, 48 percent of us didn't vote for President Bush, but we still have some say in shaping the agenda of the country.

At least he admits that President Bush was actually elected. Clinton got only 43% of the vote in 1992 and only 49% in 1996, so I guess more people are on President Bush's side than were ever on Clinton's side.

If the filibuster is gotten rid of, the extended debate is gotten rid of in the Senate, first of all, it means the president can put 10 judges on the bench that we believe are not qualified to serve.

Strange part is that the ABA and just about everyone else thinks that they are.

We've confirmed 205 of his judges.  He wants those last 10, so they're willing to change the rules to do it.

No, they are willing to change the rules so they can have a vote and fulfill their constitutional obligations.

But it has much worse implications.  The president has a Social Security plan, which is kind of out there.

The old scare tactic. "He'll take away your Social Security!"

He basically wants to turn over Social Security to the same kind of people who gave us Enron.

Told you. Problem is that you could put your money into safer accounts like bonds and such just like your 401k.

Privatization is something the America people don't support by a very large margin.

But you better not change their 401k's.

Without extended debate, he can march marshal his party and just ram it right through.  They already ram things through the House.  We need more than one party in charge.  And the vote on Tuesday is going to be critical to decide whether American democracy still allows those of us who didn't vote for the president to have any say in running the country whatsoever.

Sure they can. Apparently the voters like what the president is trying to accomplish or they would not have voted the way they did.

Oh, so now it isn't about recent events or recent Polls, it's about the Vote in 2004? Yah, OK.

I was commenting on what Dean said, but you already knew that.

There is also plenty of poll-data that shows that if the election were held today, with the same candidates, GDubbubuya would lose.

Again no link?

And that is just 1 POLL.

You were discussing President Bush's and congresses approval ratings, not approval of the war. Again, I ask you for a link to support your claim.

Did you notice this paragraph that was buried in the story though?

Americans appeared evenly divided over whether the decision to send U.S. troops to Iraq was a mistake, with 49 percent saying yes and 48 percent saying no. The sampling error was plus or minus 5 points.

No change there for quite awhile.

Yes, well we all know how much national party-hacks are behind the politics of the day. I mean, seriously...

No, actually I pointed out that the questions in polls get differing results based upon questions asked...

Twist and squirm all you want to, but the fact is that you stated and I quote:

Gdubbya CHOSEto start this fight with the Congress, and it is hurting him...and his poll numbers go down, each dayit continues.

'Bill - Fold' 5/17/05 3:00am

I do not understand what a poll about Iraq has to do with this.

...(and I did just give you a link to 'proof' that the people are not now for this "War", nor are they very appreciative of the Congress.

The poll that you keep quoting does no such thing. About 1/2 way through your very next post it states :

Americans appeared evenly divided over whether the decision to send U.S. troops to Iraq was a mistake, with 49 percent saying yes and 48 percent saying no.

Looks pretty evenly split to me.

nor are they very appreciative of the Congress.

I'll grant you that much. As I showed earlier, the Dems are in worse shape in the polls though.
Grandpa Dan Zachary 5/19/05 5:36pm

I didn't make that shit up,

No, but you sure spun the heck out of it to get it to say what you want to hear.

I mean, did I lie about what theyclaimed?

I do not see where they claimed that President Bush's approval ratings are declining, so maybe you lied or maybe you misunderstood.

only that there are so many negative numbers for the Republican Party right now, that I do not see
how
they will gain
any
seats next time...

The only problem with your analysis is that the Dems are in worse shape.

Lastly, Dean isn't a lunatic,

No, he just doesn't believe that Osama was behind the attacks on 9/11, that DeLay should be in prison without a trial but we should reserve judgement on Osama, if Social Security is not fixed then there will be cuts to benefits but there is nothing wrong with Social Security, he supports a person who admits to being a socialist who isn't really a socialist, there was no reason to send troops to Afghanistan but we should have sent more troops, our troops were poorly equipped but they ran through at record speed, etc. He doesn't sound too crazy.

Oh and, what Polls have you been citing?

I'm not going to retype all that just because you can't read my posts. Just go to

Yeah, well since you know that I am NOT a liar, then perhaps YOU have not seen Gdubbya's numbers of late...? I haven't misunderstood anything, and it isn't MY claim, it is the claim of every well-respected Polling outfit in America. Dubbya's numbers, are down. Can you show me ANY poll that shows his approval numbers going UP?

I have shown you that his approval numbers are the same as last month and last year in pretty much all of the major polls. Why do you keep repeating this?

I believe that the above table show a distinctive
downward trend
in Gdubbya's numbers

Wow, you finally found one that actually has his overall approval lower than his disapproval. Only problem is that one year ago on 5/3-9/04 it was an approval of 44% and disapproval of 48%. With the MoE at +/- 3 you can agree with me that statistically speaking, it has not changed at all even in this poll.

Twist it any way you want to, but the numbers are pretty much the same as last month/last year.

Why would someone vote for
Nixon
...? (He did have that all important "R"next to his name...).

I am sure there was those who saw only the R, but I bet there were many who believed he would be better than his rival. This was all before the stories about him came out of course, so we will never know how things would have went at the voting booth afterwords.

How would I be able to do that?

He has retired now so that he can keep his pension, but that is irrellevant. You have stated here many times that the party affiliation is the most important thing, so if you had the chance, would you vote for him or his Republican aponent? Many have knowing that he has beaten his wife and taken bribes before, but I want to know how far your "loyalty" goes.

But if all you think of it as is a letter or a "social club" than you know a helluva lot less about politics than I thought.

That is pretty much what you have reduced it too with your claims of loyalty and such. It has become nothing more than a ball game where you either cheer for the Vikings or the Packers and it is the end of the world if the wrong team wins.

And I think you take great joy in pointing out this sort of thing.

No more than you and Fold take in pointing to Tom Delay or Nixon.

Maybe you think it makes some kind of general statement about the character of Democrats.

Many in charge of the party, yes. There is a long list of hypocrisy and out right criminals in the party. One recent example would be the $200,000 fine to the DNC and Rainbow/Push for their partisan "get-out-the-vote" scam. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050526/ap_on_go_ot/jackson_dnc_fine_1 Rainbow may even lose it's tax exempt status over this.

Another would be the trouble they are trying to cause Tom Delay over the trips. If you look at this chart by the non-partisan Political Money Line http://www.politicalmoneyline.com/cgi-win/x_PrivateDetail.exe?DoFn=MostTrips You will see that the top 14 are Democrats and only 5 out of the top 30 are Republican. Tom Delay is 121st on the list with about 1/4th the trips taken when compared to Maxine Waters, Joe Lieberman, Barney Frank, etc. (many of whom just updated their reportings due to all the Delay talk) yet they keep telling us how terrible Delay is and Howard Dean has even stated that he should be in jail.  This is what you are being "loyal" to Rat.

Poor Mark Felt...

Who gives a shit about him? I am glad that Nixon got ran out of office, but that was 30(?) years ago and he isn't even alive now. At least the Republicans had the guts to chase him out of office. Why keep bringin him up? Does that somehow excuse what the DNC is doing now?

who allowed the Vietnam War to run and run and run,

And here all this time I thought that it was Lyndon Johnson (Dem) who got us into the war and escalated it and Richard Nixon (Rep.) who started bringin troops home and eventually ended the thing. I'll have to go back to my high school history teacher and straighten him out on the facts I guess.

The blogswarm can take down journalists, politicians and that bitch who works for Pepsico quicker and more efficiently.

You sure do have a problem with free speech don't you? Is it bad when they point out where news people outright lie or rush a story without verifying the facts? These people you speak of getting "taken down" only have themselves to blame or else they could just show us the facts from their newsdesks.

And all they need to do is buy some bandwidth and set up shop.

You could just as easily do the same and show us how they are wrong. Better yet (and cheaper) you can do that here.

Thanks everyone.

The trip was good. I feel a little bad about saying this, but it was actually pretty enjoyable (except for the funeral of course). It became more of a family reunion rather than a sad time. My aunt, uncle and cousins live down there, my parents from Tennessee, my brother from Indiana and my sister and her family from here all were there for a long weekend.

We went to the funeral Monday morning and did the visitation and funeral part all at the same time. That was good because it reduced the really bad sadness part to just the morning and got it over with. That is the part that I have the worst time with.

Then my cousin told my brother, nephew and myself to hurry up and change and he would take us out on his flat bottom boat fishing in the White River which is world known for it's trout fishing. Many records have been taken there. We limited out on rainbows in about 2 hours. Threw a lot back as well. Really turned a bad day into a most enjoyable day. Here is a picture for you Rat:

I joked about only in Arkansas could you go to your grandmother's funeral in the morning and then go fishing in the afternoon. We decided that grandma probably planned it so we could all get together again like that. I am sure that if she could plan such things, she would have planned it that way.

We also went to a refuge farm near my uncle's house. There is a lady there that takes in mistreated animals. Check this out http://www.rockyridgerefuge.com/  My aunt wrote to Guiness book of records about "Lurch" who is a Watusi. They are kind of like a long horned cow. Lurch has very unusually large horns though and is now in the record books. His horns are 37.5 " around and are over 7 feet long. They guess that the horns weigh over 100 lbs a piece. I was kind of scared standing in front of this bull with these large horns, but she told us that he is very tame and has given children rides many times. She was right, he just wanted his picture taken so we would have to pet him in return.

She also has a baby Zebra named "Zeebisciut", llamas, miniature cows, an antelope from China (I think that was what she said), etc. Pretty cool place. All these wild animals were more friendly and were more happy to see us than my house cat. Check out the website and look at all the pictures so I do not have to tie up the boards with pictures. Just amazing.

All in all, it was one of the best funerals I have attended and am very greatful for having such a great family to help everyone of us through this tough time. It really made it tough to come home again.

There is "trophy" sections of the river for that. Suppose to be some huge fish in that area.

Tell me you didn't use bait.

We used nightcrawlers. I do not know how to flyfish. We would cast into the rapids and let it bounce along the bottom untill a waiting fish would grab it. Lots of fun.

Twenty hours practice with a flyrod and you could free yourself from bait.

Step out of the darkness and into the light, Dan.

LOL, come over to the darkside Rat. Actually, it does look like fun and I want to try it sometime. Just not enough time over the weekend for that though.

You would have enjoyed it. We put in at Buffalo City which is where the Buffalo River (a national scenic river due to it's beauty) joins the White. The bluffs had to be at least 100 feet tall.

Here is the rapids that we fished:

Just gorgeous and a wonderful time with a family fishing contest.
