I'm posting this here...

I think this clue went right over our heads and it was to be easy...heck this is to get over right...

so I dumbed it down

Johnson = all of the above

Mounds =candy

Spirits= Liquer (ok took me a dictionary to think of this)

I haven't paid close attention, but I like the mounds idea you just threw up here, Kitch.

I'm gonna try and make it out tonight. I don't know. I'm not feeling too well and I gotta work on my attic this weekend. I took half a day today cuz I'm not feeling well. Caught myself a cold.

We can skip posting the clue tonight. At least not in the open thread. I'll egram it to cooler heads if they want it badly enough.

will most likey be ready to hunt after I get off work in the morning at 8. Family will join me shortly after Steph picks them up from my moms.

BTW- the amount of lurkers just for this past hunt was a bit annoying. Any concerns on that front? I would never want to have anything happen that caused people to feel like the doors got shut to the cooler. But where do we draw the line?
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 8:52 AM Permalink
KITCH

IMHO...almost need to draw the line in the sand somewhere.......

I still think we need an invite only thread...but still do like we have in the past....

I've re-read all the hunt threads the past few months...and I personaly feel that the "core" users of the public thread are great....UNTIL we get narrowed down in the hunt...getting close and we know it...we shut up....we then post our awesome ideas/finds in the "invite" thread....

...but the "regulars" still care about the newbies...and almost act like a "tourguide" with our posts....give people good ideas and keep them going straight...

..but it is something we will always need to deal with....

If we don't set it up...somebody else would.....I know this...

I believe you are right Kitch... of course there are two factors that also contribute to the lack of info we post in the threads at that point of the hunt. We are more so in the parks then vs. online. So at least for me, I try to keep it short and sweet.

By the time we start hitting clue 7, anyone who was giving in the regular thread will have been given an invite to the "other" thread anyways.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think we as the "Cooler Crew" can set up a private thread to discuss clues if we, (Mark and Tim) are charging for access to the cooler crew.

Now, what someone does outside of the "Cooler Crew Refugee Camp" is beyond the control of the "Cooler Crew", if you know what I mean.

If someone is paying for access that seems like a shoe in as far as I'm concerned. But are we making that thread open for people who are payed to post only?

I don't want anyone reading things for free.
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 10:11 AM Permalink
THX 1138

The way I have it pictured, they won't be able to view anything hunt related for free.

I'm sure Mark/Tim will work with us on this. Especially when they consider how many page views lurkers will eat up.

We're sort of a special group here compared to the other folders/threads.

Thats all that concerns me.

Hopefully everyone will hold true to the request that you not share someone elses noodle outside the crew.

Another thing

Since I believe this will be a special feature just for the cooler crew, I'm hoping we can get a list of paid usernames for the cooler crew.

Just because someone is paying to get in, doesn't mean they'll contribute.....

See what I'm getting at?
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 10:34 AM Permalink
THX 1138

Of course, that's not totally fair either.

There's many Coolerheads that don't contribute online all that much, cuz they're out in the park.
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 10:35 AM Permalink
OTiS

Ok... how about we take it by ear. We all know whos in the park and we know who is giving online.

If we decide... and I do me WE decide someone is sucking off the hard work of others and giving Zero back then pull them.... or let the coolercrew mod have a talk with them as a last resort before they get pulled. :goofy:

They wouldn't even really need to post an actual noodle if they didn't want to or couldn't since most of their thoughts were already discussed. But they could at least give comments on the parks and noodles to be a part of the discussion anyway.

I do believe that we should take it up in here with all of us before anyone is banned because of lurking.
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 10:50 AM Permalink

That I agree with CM. At least speak up and give an opinion on whats happening with noodles etc.

I agree, anything ever concerning a ban on someone needs to be discussed with all of us and voted on before any action is taken.

Really there is no easy answer on this. During the early parts of the hunt, there will be more posts, more activity on the boards because people won't want to go out yet. They'll be posting their thoughts on what the clues mean. Some people are naturally going to be somewhat precluded from being able to post as easily. A number of us have computer access at work and at home, but some people can't post until after work. Say they work 9-5 during the day and can't post, they may come home to a hundred posts that's covered their thoughts. If we make it where people have to post, then there's so much that we'll have to slog of people saying "I agree" basically. It's nice to have confirmation that others think the same thing on a clue, but at what cost of slogging time and volume of posts? Also, as time goes along, we're going to be out more in the parks, talking clues either in the parks or at places like Great Waters. In a sense, the forum here has become a medium which people use to get to a higher level of being a cooler crew member. That being one that gets the insider information by actually being out at the parks, being visibly active and earning our trust. It will be like a progression. Early on, we'll be posting on here what we think. Later on the hunt, the majority of people around here will be the newbies and lurkers, looking for further information or more acceptance. We'll be out looking for it, and those who really post and become a part of this community will truly be rewarded with the insight of people like AW, Jake, Scribe, Kitch, myself, etc.

Regarding the banning/moderating issue and timing, I think we had kind of discussed this before. Personally, I think that if one of us feels that a post is questionable, we should have the right to take it down immediately. If someone posts something where they threaten the life of a cooler crew member and they use 20 different cuss words, I feel that we should have the right to take that down right away. If it's in the heat of the treasure hunt, we may not have a bunch of people on right away to make a quick decision. Take it down, copy it, paste in here, let us discuss it. If it's deemed that they can say such things, then we can always repost it.

If you re-read my post you'll see I was referring to banning someone for lurking only. That's the total opposite of what you guys are talking about which has already been discussed.
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 12:18 PM Permalink
OTiS

I was only refering to cases on the hunting thread. I believe any other time a mod can make a change and fix it back later after it's been discussed if need be when it applies to the cooler as a whole.

No need to wait for a vote on things like that.

I just mean for people who are taking but not giving during the hunt. We can talk about them....
Mon, 08/22/2005 - 12:53 PM Permalink
OTiS

Of course... all of you know... bottom line is things never go as planned so even after we talk about all of this... things change and we all know that. The heat of the hunt will change how we are reacting to certain things and how much time we will have in here.

I know anyone in here would make choices based only in the best interest of the crew as a whole. We can just play it by ear and enjoy the hunt knowing that we're in good hands.

...after thinking this thru again...

most of the time is later in the hunt and i'm paranoid....I just want to share my info with the CORE of the coolercrew...I don't want to share with anybody that I don't care about....heck...its the same thing in the park.....I spend a lot of my time noodling my ideas from one person to the next....either it be the camocrew, Terry,Kathy H, AW, etc...I'm lookin' for what they think.....but I'm not going to walk up to a complete stranger and do that...

Its not a matter of lurkers not posting...I don't really care if they post or not...I'll encourage them to post 'cuz this is the only way we get to know another 'cooler'....its just a matter of "us"...we just need to continue to encouage anti-lurking....it works...

I honestly think that people realize they are stealing ideas...and they should contribute back...if possible.

btw...I never lurked...heck IAN vouched for me and I was in the invite posting in the invite thread on day 1....heh...

I never lurked either.... OT found me at PP and showed me the way. That was a few days before the PDG. I was in and posting from day one.

Clue Master

I lurked for almost 4 clues back in '97 before making my first post. I was intimidated and not sure how they would treat anyone new since there wasn't anyone new posting. I do feel that the encouragement and support that we have shown does help. All I needed was someone to make a post to say it was OK. Kinda like waving me in to the group. Otherwise I felt like I was walking in on a private conversation. I don't like the idea of an invite thread tho since that goes against the whole community idea that this is supposed to be. We just have to help out those shy one in the town is all. I really don't think some kid just trying to steal ideas is gonna pony up 10 bucks to read stuff that just 'might' be right. Especially when they can look at the PP for free.

I agree with the good hands thing OTiS said. I think we're all capable of making a judgment if needed. It's pretty cut and dry to a point.

Terry

This is my take on lurkers and their right to lurk or contribute, especially now that it will be pay to participate....

There shouldn't be an invite thread. One thread to slog through would actually be a good thing in my book when I can't slog during the day at all.

Like CM stated, lurkers often only need to encouraged and they will share most of the time if they feel they have anything that hasn't already been posted.

Even if all anyone does is lurk, there are so many ideas thrown into the mix that someone would still need to get out and think those ideas through and do what makes the most sense to them.

Historically, there was always only one hunt thread on the PP board. Everyone either shared ideas or lurked.

A person has the option of sharing what they might think is a solution to a clue - or not.
