If you plan on grilling out, you will need to provide your own meat. We will

have one or two grills, so additional grills would bee nice if you'd please bring

Please bring a dish to share. This izz a community event so that no single

Store bought's just fine for those of you that don't cook, can't cook, don't

Hey Hunters!!! How was the Bash???? Sorry we couldn't make it. Can you give a little more info on the bock hunt?? And I'm veeeeeeeery serious about a mid

summer hunt. I feel it should stay in the city limits of St. Paul. Too many distructive people out there. Maplewood doesn't want us any more. It doesn't have to be in

one of the major parks. Oh well, just a thought or two!!

The bash was pretty cool. Maybe 40 people there. But like I said before I'm not good at guessing numbers of people. Aaron Nierdorf (the real one) came and led

an expedition to show everyone where he found it. But then he left after that. Of course, he still didn't have everyone convinced but oh well. Lots of food and lots of

food left over. The subject of more hunts came up a little bit, but not too seriously. However, I would very much like to do so and would be willing to put it together.

But there's a few questions to resolve. Perhaps, if anybody's still reading this, they can give some input. First, should the search be for a physical object (a little

harder to hide without the snow), or should it just be for some piece of information, like the answer to a riddle? Second, should it follow the same clue a day format

as the medallion hunt or perhaps it can be a single outing where everyone gets together in a certain park one day and then they go from there. Also, if it is a clue a

day, where would the clues appear? Third, should there be a cash prize? If so, how much and where should it come from? I'm eager to hear your thoughts and like I

said, I'd be willing to organize it.

Sun, 02/07/1999 - 7:40 PM Permalink

Alan & Jill, He said he found the medallion in line with the 4 trees and another line from the 459 Ruth Address where he could see the numbers on the house. It had

been in a chunk of snow that had gotten icy. A small piece of yarn was visible on the outside of the icy chunk. They got lucky. Many had been digging in and around

that area for several days. I know there was still some unturned snow there, and it appears they found the right patch.

Next year's hunt starts in late January or whenever the Winter Carnival starts. The actual start date and first clue is the Sunday before the offical start of the Winter

Carnival. As for future hunts, I'm considering setting one up around April. I'm not completely decided on the format yet but I'm considering a one day hunt in a single

park where people would have to solve a series of riddles rather than rummage through stuff looking for an object. I'm also considering something on line where

people could get all the information they need to find something from the computer without having to go out anywhere. Its more likely I would need help with that

since I don't know anything about HTML.

CO has a Snowdown Festival where they hunt for a Silver Bullet (www.snowdown.org) for $500.00. This event is sponsored by a Radio Station and Coors Lite

Beer.

Georgia has a Cherry Blossom festival sponsored by Coca-Cola, but no hunt as far as I can tell.

also check out--www.ifea.com to see how seriously one can take festival, event planning. It's a lot of work. (Got most of this from Winter Carnival's links page).

Leah...

The Schell's Bock Hunt seems to bee more adult oriented. There's quite a lot of beer and a good time izz had by all - if you get my drift. (I was really surpized the

Police were as lenient as they were!!!)

I don't remember specific kids' activities, I've no need to check on those kind'a things, but it seems that many a fam hunted. It can get to be quite a long haul into the

park, and you CAN'T use a stroller - just too muddy and rocky. Basically, you're hiking Flandrau State Park and just happen to bee looking for wooden goat

heads. So, if you've got toddlers and can't carry them on your back... Don't know if you can do it. But older kids, maybee 6 on up, were out hunting - alone and

with 'rents - and having a great time!

But seems to me I saw something on their Web site about kids and finding bocks...

I'll bee bock in a bit with the link!

There's a bock hunt at Fitger's in Duluth next month - ittiz indoors in the Fitger's mall-thingy complex - and strollers would bee a breeze! We'll have more info about

the Fitger's Hunt when we get it.

I talked to Como Zoo today and they were open to the idea of having some kind of treasure hunt there. It would have to be a fundraiser though so there may be an

entrance fee. As far as the timing goes, it would likely be either March or May as they already have something going on in April. May might be more likely as it will

take some time to prepare, but late March is still a possibility. Any preferences on what kind of prize could/should be offered or how much people might be willing to

pay?

Alison, if we can drum up 100 people and charge maybe $5-10 a head. We could easily pull in between $500-$1000. We would give 15-20% to Como as a

service charge, use 30-35% for throwing a gala picnic for all the hunters, and then give away the $250-$500 remaining dollars to the victor. I would also think that

we would need to buy a trophy or plaque for the winning team so that they will have the ability to gloat and show it off until the net big hunt. Maybe, it could be a

trophy which would revolve from winning team to winning team with each new winning team getting their names added to the bottom of it. I also feel if we keep the

prize money low enough we won't have all the Johnny-come-latelys who went out in search of the medallion at Conway. This will only attract the true blue treasure

hunters who feel that outsmarting everyone else is much much better than any financial prize.

I was planning on doing an email to all the people here (cheapest, most effective way of advertising). I was hoping we could get 100 people at around $10 each, if

that doesn't sound realistic. Some of the money may go towards a prize, or its possible the Zoo may be able to drum up a corporate sponsor to donate a prize (or

maybe if some of you want to help, you can help put together a prize package of donated prizes). As far as a picnic or some party kind of party connected to the

event, I agree we would have to do something to make people really feel like they got their money's worth. Again, the possibilities are that some of the entrance fee

money would pay for it, a corporate sponsor would pay for it, or individual donors would help put it together. I think in the end though, to make it worth the zoo's

time in helping to do this, we would need to raise as much money for them as possible.

Tue, 02/09/1999 - 4:34 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Oops, I meant to say I hope 100 people isn't UNrealistic. I'm sure there are that many who would like to do it. The question is, will that many pay for it?

just dont hide it in any dung

Allison Wonderland

Actually, I was thinking I wasn't going to hide anything at all. I was thinking of using a set of riddles where you can solve the riddles using just your brain and your

eyes and you would never need touch or disturb anything.

Tue, 02/09/1999 - 5:54 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Do you think people would pay to do the hunt if there was no cash prize, only a nice trophy? A rotating trophy would be nice, but it may be difficult to get it back

year after year. Right now I'm aiming for May 1st. As far as a picnic goes I'm thinking I'd like to do it afterwards, but we may have to do it before as it may be hard

to predict how long the hunt will take. In May the Zoo grounds are open from 8-8 and the building from 10-6. I'd like to have it go on during the time in which the

park has the most open access. So maybe we could plan on ending it at 6 and if no one has won, the person/team who has solved the most clues would be the

winner.

Wed, 02/10/1999 - 3:28 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

As far as the format would go I was thinking of using something called a DOUBLE CROSS. If anyone out there gets GAMES magazine you know what I mean.

There would be 20-24 clues to solve. When each one is solved, the letters of the answer are entered into a grid. When the grid is completed it will spell out a riddle

which would lead to the final answer. The clues would require people to get information from around the park, but none of it would require anyone to touch or

disturb anything in the park.

If anyone is still reading this and really wants to help these would be the areas available:

Publicity

Registration

Prizes

Refreshments/Party (though Blue Bell Enterprises has the first right of refusal for any catering of events related to the zoo.)

Day of Event Assistance

Puzzle (though I'd like to keep this committee as small as possible to avoid leaks).

One thing I don't get exaclty is why Como Zoo needs the money.? Aren't they a public zoo supported by tax dollars? And how are you going to determine what they

get, or who gets it? Don't they have some standard policy on using their facilities? I mean they must be open to public for group events...?? One option might be to

get a charity group involved, if you want some of the proceeds to go to that. 10$ bucks a head is kind of a lot. You could start an association and have a newsletter

and charge 10$ toward an annual event such as this and include it as an annual membership. Then the catering could just be a la carte, or paid for per item. i certainly

wouldn't want to be responsible for the food (these things always cost more than planned. ask anyone who's done a wedding). It seems like a great idea, but lots of

things to work out. The best scenario would be if you had a sponsor who would defray the cost. But, it's also nice to do things without some corporation. and if you

put a lot of time into it, you should get something out of it as well. anyway--just some thoughts.
